(BR.CHB-5381-00). ISBN
9790004413821. 7.5 x 10.5
inches. English. As
director of the Bavarian
Radio Choir, Howard Arman
has been actively engaged
with international
Christmas carols through
various Christmas-related
CD productions in the
past years. This has
resulted in a number of
original arrangements for
four- to eight-part mixed
choir a cappella,
shedding new light on
well-known classics such
as O du frohliche [O, you
joyful], Stille Nacht
[Silent Night] and Lasst
uns froh und munter sein
[Let us be happy and
cheerful]. The first
volume includes five
Christmas carols from the
German-speaking regions.
They range from simple
but harmonically
intriguing settings such
as Lieb Nachtigall, wach
auf [Dear nightingale,
wake up] to eight-part
sound paintings with
bell-like chimes as in O
du frohliche and
classical double choir
settings such as Resonet
in laudibus. The second
volume includes five
Christmas spirituals with
English texts, forming a
contrast to the solemn
and festive character of
the first. The choir can
prove its swing and jazz
qualities here; the
stirring arrangements are
a gain for classical
Christmas concerts, too.
Following the tradition
of the spiritual, some
settings also require
soloists, which can,
however, also be
recruited from the choir
if adequate singers are
available. The first
piece combines the
spirituals It's a
Birthday and Wasn't That
a Mighty Day to form a
medley, Ain't That a
Rockin' gives a moment of
tranquility before the
likewise rousing
spirituals Mary Had a
Baby and Little David
conclude the volume. In
both volumes, Howard
Arman provides a short
preface in German and
English, explaining the
background of each piece
and giving advice on
performance. $26.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

9790004412220. 7.5 x 10.5

Friedrich Doles was the
indirect successor of
J.S. Bach as Thomaskantor
in Leipzig. He must have
been familiar with Bachs
setting of Jesu, meine
Freude BWV 227 when he
wrote his Motet on this
piece around 1775, since
there are several
stylistic parallels with
its great precursor.
Typical for Doless
chorale motet is the
fifth strophe (see
example) with its sleek
and elegant alternation
between solo and tutti
sections, whereby the
composer and Thomaskantor
probably only had eight
able singers for the
tutti in Leipzig around
1780, as Doles himself
laments. The late 18th
century was simply not
the golden age of the
Thomasschule! Doless
motet fell into oblivion
and was long held to be
lost. This first edition
supplements the
publications from the
late Baroque and early
Classical eras (Graun,
Bortnyansky a.o.) which
were released in recent
years in Breitkopfs
Choral Library. $8.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

(BR.CHB-5370). ISBN
9790004413005. 7.5 x 10.5
inches. Latin. In
1896, Sibelius wrote Hymn
(Op. 21), also known by
its initial words Natus
in curas, for the
unveiling of the
sepulchral monument of
Josef Pippingskold
(1825-1892), professor of
obstetrics at the
Imperial Alexander
University in Finland
(presently the University
of Helsinki). The Latin
text for Hymn was written
for the occasion by
Fridolf Gustafsson
(1853-1924), professor of
Roman literature at the
University. Sibelius
worked as acting music
teacher at the University
at the time, and as part
of his duties at the
ceremony he conducted a
small ensemble consisting
of singers from the male
choirs Akademiska
Sangforeningen and Muntra
Musikanter. According to
the report in
Hufvudstadsbladet on the
following day, the simple
unveiling ceremony was
given a particularly
impressive ending by a
hymn composed for the
ceremony by Jean Sibelius
in an old Italian style.
The work was included in
a choral collection
published in 1899, for
which Sibelius made small
revisions, mostly by
interchanging the
inner-voices in some
passages and reworking
the ending by extending
the last phrase. This
version was published in
the Complete Edition on
which the current
practical edition is
based. $4.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks

Farewell
Music
Wit
h the Ernste
Gesaenge (Serious
Songs) for baritone and
string orchestra Hanns
Eisler created at the end
of his life a key work
whose complex message
becomes more than clear
from the music settings
of texts by five
different poets, together
with the Holderlin motto
articulated in the
prologue. It reflects -
between resignation and
hope - the difficult
current state of societal
development. At the
same time, not least by
harking back to earlier
works, it is a kind of
quintessence of his
composing. The piano
arrangement of the subtle
orchestral accompaniment
is intended not only as a
study aid for singers,
but also as a work for
public
performance. $22.95 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 3 to 4 weeks
