The cantata
Ich freue mich in dir was
first performed during
Bach's second year as
Thomaskantor, on the 3rd
day of Christmas, and
belongs to the so-called
annual cycle of chorale
cantatas. Here the focus
of the composition is the
hymn of the same name by
Philipp Ziegler, in which
the first and final
strophes were adopted,
word for word, in the
first and sixth movements
of the cantata. The
soprano, which carries
the chorale, is supported
by the conrnett (Zink),
which already at this
time had become a
seldom-used instrument.
The joyful, lively choral
movement with
instrumental interludes
directly follows the
first aria, and begins
with a marked, ascending
motive at the word
Getrost! (safely). The
oboes d'amore which
accompany the alto lend
the movement a special
color. In the second aria
(for soprano), Bach again
shows himself to be the
master of text
interpretation. The words
Wie lieblich klingt es in

in an exchange between
open strings and
sixteenth note figures.

Telemann's
Missa brevis on the
Christmas hymn Ein
Kindelein so lobelich is
one of eleven surviving
Latin Missae breves based
on church hymns. The
motetlike composition
calls for a mixed choir
accompanied by a basso
continuo, reinforced by
colla-parte instruments.
However, the mass can
also be performed solely
with an organ
accompaniment. Gottlob
Harrer, the successor to
Johann Sebastian Bach as
Thomaskantor, performed
the mass in Leipzig at
Christmas in 1750 and
1751 with an instrumental
accompaniment and for
this purpose he added two
horns. They are included

Mendelssohn
's 12 juvenile symphonies
are more than the
scholastic exercises of a
compositionally
precocious
twelve-year-old.
Mendelssohn assimilates
some vastly different
influences (Bach, Mozart,
Dittersdorf, etc. ) and
attains an amazing
originality in certain
movements. The
source-critical scores of
the string symphonies
were issued a fairly long
time ago as part of the
Leipzig Mendelssohn
Edition. Kantate

The cantata
Christ lag in
Todes-Banden is a mixed
chorale cantata that sets
the first and last verses
of the corresponding
Luther chorale verbatim,
but the other movements
in free poetry based on
the content of the
chorale. The time of
composition cannot be
clearly determined, but
at the end of the copy
that serves as the basis
for the edition, there is
a date of January 1693.
According to this, the
composition was written
before 1693 and thus well
before Johann Kuhnau took
up his post as
Thomaskantor in Leipzig
(1701). The use of two
cornetti is also a
parallel to the cantata
Lobe den Herren, meine
Seele(PB 32091), whose
composition can be linked
to Kuhnau's stay in
Zittau. The two parts
marked Cornett are only
in the first two
movements of the cantata;
in the further course, a
collaparte lead would be
possible, but cannot be
proven. In principle,
according to the source,
the two cornett parts can
also be played by
violins. The title page
also notes the
possibility of adding
ripieno singers, i.e. a
choir, in the
non-soloistic
movements.The cantata,
according to its text
intended for Easter, is
very well suited for use
in church services with
its small size and
flexible scoring.

Telemann's
Missa brevis on the
Christmas hymn Ein
Kindelein so lobelich is
one of eleven surviving
Latin Missae breves based
on church hymns. The
motetlike composition
calls for a mixed choir
accompanied by a basso
continuo, reinforced by
colla-parte instruments.
However, the mass can
also be performed solely
with an organ
accompaniment. Gottlob
Harrer, the successor to
Johann Sebastian Bach as
Thomaskantor, performed
the mass in Leipzig at
Christmas in 1750 and
1751 with an instrumental
accompaniment and for
this purpose he added two
horns. They are included
in the present edition as
ad libitum parts. Score
and part available

Zum ersten
Mal wird hier gewagt,
eine Geschichte der
musikalischen Bildung in
einen Zeitrahmen von mehr
als 3.000 Jahren zu
stellen. Damit verbindet
sich der Anspruch, ein
Bild zu zeichnen, das
nicht erst - wie bisher
ublich - um 800 oder gar
erst um 1.800 beginnt.
Denn die
Grundentscheidungen uber
den Bildungsrang der
Musik im europaischen
Abendland sind da langst
gefallen: in den antiken
Hochkulturen und im
Christentum.Musik ist
mehr als Musik - und
Bildung ist mehr als
Padagogik, denn Musik ist
ein unubertroffener
Spiegel der Welt.
Musikalische Weltbilder
haben ganze Nationen,
Geschichtsepochen und
Kulturkreise bis in ihre
politische Gestalt hinein
gepragt: Musik hat
gebildet im
ursprunglichen Sinn des
Wortes. Die Geschichte
der musikalischen Bildung
gibt Antworten auf Fragen
wie:- Welche Rolle
spielen Musik und Bildung
in verschiedenen
Epochen?- Welche Funktion
hat musikalische Bildung
fur den Staat und fur die
Entwicklung der
Personlichkeit?- Wie
geben ein Schamane in
Sibirien, ein Ritter aus
dem hohen Adel und ein
lutherischer Lehrerkantor
musikalisches Wissen
(vermutlich) weiter?- Wie
funktionieren
musikbildende
Institutionen wie die
Schola Cantorum, die
Meistersingerschulen oder
das Thomaskantorat unter
J.S. Bach?- Was denken
Augustinus, Luther,
Comenius, Rousseau,
Goethe, Frobel und Adorno
uber musikalische Bildung
und Praxis?Der Leser wird
zu 40 Stationen unserer
