An
essential feature of
attitudes prevailing in
the days of Luther was
the ubiquitous concern
with death and dying,
assailed by plague, wars
and the never-ending
dangers of daily life.
The associated fears
sometimes escalated to
the grotesque, as in
paintings by Hieronymus
Bosch, and the 'dance of
death' was a popular
motif in those years.
Luther's chorale of 1524
In the very midst of life
/ we see death all around
us (the Erfurt
Enchiridion) is based on
the Gregorian Media vita
in morte sumus that
emerged in France in
about 750, evoking
thoughts of mortality in
its outline form.

A delightful
lyrical piece by popular

that works wonderfully in

Playable as long as you
have the four main parts
covered by the
instruments of your
choice. Arrangement
includes optional parts
for piano, timpani,
percussion and mallet
percussion. Will sound
great with bands with
extreme instrumentation
issues and very small
groups. Extremely
nice!
About
Build-A-Band
Series
The
Build-A-Band Series
provides educational and
enjoyable music for bands
with incomplete or
unbalanced
instrumentation. Written
using just four or five
parts (plus percussion),
these effective
arrangements will work
with any combination of
brass, woodwind, string
and percussion
instruments as long as
you distribute the parts
so that each of the five
parts is covered. All of
the publications in the
Build-A-Band Series have
been arranged to be
playable with any
instrumentation as long
as each part is used: 1st
Part, 2nd Part, 3rd Part,
4th Part, and Bass Part.
(Please note: In some of
these arrangements the
4th Part, and the Bass
Part are the same, making
it possible to play those
arrangements with only 4
parts.)

Adver
sity, in any form at any
point of our lives, can
be absolutely
debilitating mentally,
physically, emotionally
and spiritually. In the
midst of hard times, it
is difficult to imagine
what our lives will look
like on the other side of
the adversity we are
facing. Yet so many of us
carry on, move forward,
and rise above determined
to never be defined by
our circumstances. For
some their personal
faith, support from
family, or relationship
to friends provides the
necessary fuel for the
resilience they need to
rise above adversity. It
is amazing when a group
of people are able to
come together to overcome
a common obstacle. With
this in mind, I put to
music that spirit of
rising above for the
Liberty High School Band
and their director
Michael Summers.
Northeast Ohio has seen
its share of prosperity
and significant times of
hardship along many
different fronts. I still
see resilient leaders,
community members, and
educators like Mike who
continue to fight for
what is best and what is
right. The debut of this
work, like so many other
things, was interrupted
in the spring of 2020.
Now on the precipice of a
new beginning for many
band programs across the
country, all of us in
instrumental music
education must summon
resilience to ensure our
groups recover, grow and
flourish. The rising
major second represents
us all taking the first
step forward in good and
difficult times. The
adversity (tension)
arrives in various ways
harmonically throughout
the work. Tension can
make us lose sense of
where we are on our
journey and rob us of our
ability to imagine
getting through our
current situation. But I
am reminded that not all
tension is bad. Given
enough time and enough
resolution, we can often
make sense of the
adversity. We can
recognize that the
adversity taught us
something about ourselves
we didn't know, or
perhaps challenged us to
grow in a way we didn't
think possible. Either
way, it does not happen
unless we possess
resilience. I thank you
in advance for your
support of this music and

For faithful
Catholics it is the great
mystery, and for those
who are not Christian
believers it is
incomprehensible,
possibly even off-putting
- the mystery of the
Eucharist. As far back as
the late medieval period,
the verse prayer Ave
verum inimitably captures
the special atmosphere of
the contradiction between
a terrible death and the
redemption of mankind.
Matsushita sets an early
version of this prayer
for the Eucharist in
motet-like ABA form. A
floating melody,
alternating precisely
between major and minor
and first sung solo by
all four voices in
transposition, introduces
the piece in a
contemplative style. The
scale is then altered in
the counterpoint to a
pure Dorian mode,
contrasting in the middle
section at the text vere
passum, where Matsushita
accompanies the
increasingly wide-ranging
melody and its chromatic,
augmented intervals, by
increasingly dissonant
chordal shifts like a
fauxbourdon. From this
the tonal high point
develops into an almost
perfect F major, which
then finally picks up on
the opening motif for the
added lines of text O
Jesu dulcis, o Jesu
pie... before ebbing away
in F major. Voice range:

The
opening chorus of the
cantata Schauet doch und
sehet (Look ye then and
see now) is one of those
movements by Bach which
are much better known in
their later guise: the
first part of it became
the Qui tollis of the
Mass in B minor. But this
movement is not the only
high point of the cantata
from Bach's earliest
Leipzig period. Both the
arias are also unusual: a
bass aria depicting God's
anger dramatically as a
thundering storm, with
strings and slide
trumpet, which gives the
movement a very special
colour through its
unexpected notes beyond
the instrument's natural
series, and an alto aria
with two recorders,
accompanied by just two
oboi da caccia in unison,
which take the role of
the continuo as little
basset instruments. Music
almost not of this world!
New revised edition.

Editio Musica Budapest

the goal of publishing
earlier and alternative

Included also are

Between
Beethoven and Brahms, a
long neglected
workSchumann's last work
for solo instrument and

its premiere until 1937,
at which time it was also
released in an
editorially inadequate
version. A re-evaluation
of Schumann's late oeuvre
began in the 1980s, in
the wake of which the
missing link between the
concertos of Beethoven
and Brahms (Yehudi
Menuhin) also drew
increasing attention.
Since then, those in the

appreciate the work,
whose unique musical and
technical demands
challenge for both
interpreter and
listener.This new edition
of what is perhaps the
most underestimated
masterpiece of the
Romantic era is the first

incredible is the fact
that the composer's own

Thomas Zehetmair, who has
significantly contributed
to the re-assessment of
the concerto, assumed the
task of providing a sound
technical basis to his
revision of the solo
part.Perhaps this edition
will help stimulate
awareness and
appreciation of this
unjustly forgotten
romantic violin concerto
described by Menuhin as
the missing link between
the concertos by

Natu
re and landscape have
been the dominant themes
of much of Rhian Samuel's
vocal music of the last
ten years, projected
chiefly through the
poetry of Anne Stevenson,
and in her most recent
song-settings, the
writings of the
Pakistan-born Texas-based
poet Zulfikar Ghose. His
poem 'Conspiracy of the
Clouds' describes how,
the clouds having chosen
to become invisible,
'Even the astronauts on
the space shuttle /
looked down on a
cloudless America' as
hurricanes ravage
Louisiana and storms
engulf Nebraska. An
intriguing conceit in the
tradition of magic
realism, the text is
presented as a scena
lasting around 16
minutes, with
interpolations from
'Haze' by the
nineteenth-century New
England transcendentalist
Henry David Thoreau. Thus
modern fable and romantic
nature-description are
juxtaposed, and their
interaction becomes the
source of musical
contrasts too. Thoreau's
words are assigned
predominantly to the
vocalist's highest
register, those of Ghose
to her lower tessitura;
and the suggestive and
dramatic accompaniment
builds tension steadily
to the final ironic
response of an
incredulous American
public: not one of awe
and wonder, but the
question 'Why weren't we
told about it?
