the two join together
only at the end of the
piece. In the high voice
choir two of the four
sopranos can be replaced
by two violins. An

members. From a detailed
analyses of the work and
of the Freemasons
practices, on can infer
that the text was drawn
from the third
Lamentation of Jeremiah.
Mozart at least entered
the correct date of
composition of the Master
Music in his own work
catalogue, namely Jully
(1785).For a performance
without chorus which most
probably took place on 9
December 1785, Mozart
added three new, low wind
parts which emphasize the
gloomy mood of the work.
It is with these added
parts that the work has
come down to us as the
Maurerische Trauermusik
(Masonic Funeral
Music).

grands motets, Quam
dilecta, In convertendo

which Jean-Philippe
Rameau composed from 1713
to 1715 are still
relatively unknown today.
Yet these masterworks can
stand comparison to the
best works of
Michel-Richard de
Lalande. They are
testimony to Rameau's
great contrapuntal
mastery and contain
beautiful lyrical
passages. Quam dilecta
and Deus noster refugium
have survived only in
later sources which
originated in about 1770,
after Rameau's death, and
the works have been
rendered in a scoring
which does not correspond
to his intentions. The
present new edition
attempts for the first
time to reconstruct them
as closely as possible to
their original form. The

is based on Rameau's
autograph score from

century Te Deum
laudamus. After a
radiant introduction by
the brass section, the
first variation on the
chorale appears.
Subsequently, the song is
rendered in its original

variations follow. The
result is a solemn work
that is very fitting
within the context of a
church service, but is
also suitable for many
other
occasions.

morale et spirituale
(1641) stands entirely in
the shadow of his famous
Vespers 1610. The
editions from 1610 and
1641 both include music
for the Mass and Vespers,
but each of these
collections was composed
under much different
circumstances during
Monteverdi's lifetime. If
the works of 1610 are a
bold combination of
traditional compositional
techniques and avant
garde music, which were
intended by this weary
Court Composer at Mantua
as an application
portfolio for a new job,
the 1641 collection is
the only church music by
the mature Monteverdi
which was published after
almost thirty years in
his position as Music
Director of St. Mark's
Cathedral: the latter, a
kind of best of
collection from his many
years of experience as a
church musician. In
Venice the composer had
not only a fabulous, but
a large ensemble at his
disposal (finally, about
35 singers, alone)! The
big effect in this music
is the combination of
soloistic and weighty
tutti sections, it makes
the music, with its
clearly defined sections
and, for the most part
homophonic choral
passages more easily
performable than the
Vespers for today's
choirs. The new edition,
comprised initially of
three volumes, also
includes those works from
the Selva Morale (a Mass
and two Magnificats)
which have already been
published by Carus, as
well as all further
liturgical compositions
for use in the church.
Salmi II contains the
additional settings of
the multiple settings of
the psalms and also the
psalm Memento (each of
the first of the multiple
settings of the psalms
are to be found in the
Salmi I volume). The
edition is based on the
methods employed in the
much acclaimed Carus
edition of the Vespers: -
It contains a detailed
foreword with suggestions
for notation, scoring and
for the liturgical use of
individual compositions.

four of the five
surviving printed copies,
as well as contemporary
manuscript were
consulted. Facsimiles

Amadeus Mozart
(1756-1791) began
composition of his Great
Mass in C minor, K.
427/417a in 1782 as a
promise to himself to
write a major work for
his native Salzburg. This
period was shortly after
he had moved to Vienna in
1781, and Mozart wrote in
a letter that he made the
promise before having
married Constanze, a
decision which his father
Leopold disapproved,
though he only really
began the work after the
marriage, completing all
that he did in 1783. The
work remained uncompleted
from the sense of a
liturgical mass, missing
some of the Credo
movements, all of the
Agnus Dei, and parts of
the Sanctus and the
Benedictus, and Mozart
called it a half a mass
in a letter to his
father. Despite this, all
that was completed was
performed at a liturgical
mass on October 23, 1783,
at St. Peter's Church in
Salzburg during Mozart
and Constanze's
three-month sojourn there
to introduce Constanze to
the family. It is
believed that Mozart
borrowed from other works
to make it complete for a
liturgical performance,
and it is thought likely
that Constanze sang the
high first soprano solo
part. The work remained
in this state until
German musicologist Alois
Schmitt's work to
complete the mass was
published in 1902. The
Schmitt edition became
the standard edition
throughout the 20th
