George Gershwin's three most famous preludes demonstrate his genius for piano writing, and portray a variety of styles. Prelude I exudes energetic syncopation, Prelude II is a lyric blues with an ostinato-like accompaniment, and Prelude III closes this set brilliantly with rugged rhythms and exciting syncopations. All three preludes were selected for the Federation Festivals 2011-2013.

Aside from the Violin Chaconne (HN 557) and the ten Chorale Preludes for Organ (HN 1293), the Prelude and Fugue in D major ranks among the best-known Piano transcriptions Busoni fashioned from J. S. Bach’s works. Considerable evidence suggests that he viewed these three pieces as paradigmatic examples of his transcription technique. Busoni ’s explicit labelling of the Prelude and Fugue “for concert performance” in the title already serves as an indication of the heightened virtuosic requirements. And, indeed, here Busoni demands that the pianist have perfectly mastered the keyboard, always with the aim of delegating to the Piano, effectively but still in the spirit of Bach, the mighty sound-world of the Organ work. Gregory Stone has transcribed these three selected preludes for one piano-four hands.For much of his life George Gershwin sought to integrate the worlds of jazz and classical music. These pieces are not jazz improvisations but they do show something of the style of his own playing. Gershwin had intended to compose a set of twelve, a sort of jazz Wohltemperierte Clavier, but his unexpected death from a brain tumour at the age of 38 prevented this. At least seven survive (others may have ended up as songs), and this set of three, as published, form a satisfying unit.The first opens with a blue-note riff which forms the basis of the first theme. Contrasting material follows, making use of a distinctive repeated note figure, then the first idea reappears in a quasi-orchestral climax. The second prelude shows a curious kinship with Chopin's A minor Prelude, with its eerie accompaniment and hypnotic melody. The third exploits a similar major/minor ambivalence, but dextrous syncopation gives it driving rhythmic energy. / Piano 4 Mains

Rarely has a musical work been better characterized by its subtitle than Nicolas Bacri's Lyric Interlude: 'A Study in Pastoral Style'. When, in 2008, the composer received the commission for a piece with English Horn from Cecilia Benner, patron of the Chamber Music Society of Detroit, he immediately thought of the duo between this instrument and the Oboe that Berlioz, in the Symphonie fantastique, placed at the beginning of the 'Scène aux champs', making suddenly appear a nocturnal country landscape where two shepherds carry on a dialogue on their pipes. First performed in March 2009 in its original version for English Horn, Violin and Cello, the Lyric Interlude for English Horn and Piano (Op.110b) nonetheless proclaims another tradition: that of British pastoralism, illustrated by the music of Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958), the 50th anniversary of his death having just been celebrated. This score pays him homage of rare sensitivity: set off by refined counterpoint, the undulating lament of the beginning, rhythmically supple, evokes the waving wheat, as does Vaughan Williams in the opening undulation of his Symphony No.3. The lyrical effusion, briefly interrupted by a scherzo in 6/8, again pours out, making the work evolve towards a slow, ecstatic atmosphere, close to the last of the English composer's Three Preludes on Welsh Hymn Tunes. Far from bucolic, postcard clichés and servile imitation, this Lyric Interlude opens the doors to a realm where pure beauty reigns. The composer also wrote another version of this work for English Horn (or Flute, Clarinet or Viola), Violin and Cello, Op.110a (AL 30 751)

Par GERSHWIN GEORGE. Jascha Heifetz (1901-1987) and George Gershwin (1898-1937), two of the best known figures in American music, were good friends and often played together. Heifetz had urged Gershwin to write a violin concerto for him, but unfortunately Gershwin died before the project got off the ground. These transcriptions by Heifetz are the next best thing. The five excerpts from Porgy and Bess'« and the Three Preludes are well known and Heifetz often played them as encores, but the substantial concert excerpt from An American in ParisTM has never been published before and may not have been performed by Heifetz in public at all.
