Romans. When Mark-Anthony
heard the false news that
Cleopatra had committed
suicide, he ended his

Egypt, for her part, was
imprisoned shortly
afterwards. The two
lovers remain one of
History’s most
famous couples. This
piece was commissioned by
the Wind Orchestra of the
town of Antony, near
Paris, directedby
Philippe Rossignol, to
mark its 90th
anniversary.

concert march. Inspired
by an actual parade in
New York, Michael Brand
brings us this
spectacular original
march. Perfect in any
setting throughout the
year.
In June 1997
I was in New York and had
a free weekend. On Sunday
morning I was awoken
early by a great deal of
banging and saw that
barriers and roadblocks
had been erected
throughout Central Park.
Why? I soon heard the
answer: a great parade.
When the Americans put
together a parade they
really mean it! This one
lasted 3 hours and
brought the center of New
York to a standstill.
Bands, dancers and choirs
marched past in
celebration of the Jewish
faith. New York Parade is
completely original but
its starting point in my
imagination was a
marching band, a choir
and Broadway. The
marching band starts in
the distance, passes by
and as it moves away we
hear the next block of
performers singing,
almost chanting, a hymn
(called Jewish Song). The
groups suddenly turn into
Broadway, as a song from
an imaginary show
intervenes but then the
band and choir return in
counterpoint and all
three themes come
together.

The story of a
sleepless night, Dreams
and Fancies uses musical
episodes to depict
definite pictures: the
three accented pulses of
the main theme signifying
a kind of fate, a
demented waltz which
breaks down, a love theme
in the middle, then a
wild jazz party. The end
is a huge climax - a
grand ceremony in which
the lovers marry, but
haunted by the three
accented pulses of the
first theme, representing
a dark fate.
This
is a story of a sleepless
night: fancy is the old
English word for a
musical fantasy. There
are musical episodes,
some of which are
associated with definite
pictures: the three
accented pulses of the
main theme signifying a
kind of fate, a demented
waltz which breaks down,
a love theme in the
middle, then a wild jazz
party. The themes all
come together as the
music becomes more
exciting towards the end
with thematic
interjections appearing
as flashbacks. The end is
a huge climax - a grand
ceremony in which the
lovers marry, but haunted
by the three accented
pulses of the first
theme, representing a
dark fate. Musically the
piece is unifying in two
ways. Firstly, all the
themes are built from the
opening 15 bars.
Secondly, the pulse of
the music remains
virtually constant with
each beat around 76 per
minute. This means that
the tempi need to relate
to each other: a
difficult task for the
conductor!

is in three movements.
The first section is
jaunty and lighthearted,
the second is subdued and
tranquil, whilst the
third is a symphonic
march which gives the
bands plenty of chance to
blow their socks
off.
British
composer Gordon Jacob
ranks as one of the
world's foremost
contributors to the wind
ensemble repertoire, with
hundreds of works for
military band as well as
other types of musical
groups. He earned his
Doctor of Music degree
and also taught
counterpoint,
orchestration and
composition for 40 years
at the Royal College of
Music. He wrote band
works along the lines of
Gustav Holst and his good
friend Vaughan Williams -
not imitating their style
but, as he said, striving
to come near to their
spirit of adventure and
independence of thought
in his own work. This
suite was originally
written for Brass Band in
1955 and was arranged for
symphonic band in 1979.
It has three movements,
opening with a
lighthearted March,
followed by a subdued and
tranquil movement
entitled Solemn Music.
The suite closes with a
symphonic march, which
showcases the power of
the wind ensemble.

Sea Dreams was
written in memory of the
composer's wife, Jean.
After an introduction,
which is not heard again
until the end of the
piece, the music becomes
a rondo allegro, and
gradually builds to a big
climax. At the very end
there is an oblique
reference to the
Liebestod of Wagner's
Tristan and Isolde.
Sea Dreams was
originally a commission,
in 2007, from an American
University who wanted me
to write a piece in
memory of my first wife,
Jean, who died in 2006. I
set about writing the
music and quickly
completed the score early
in 2008, but,
unfortunately, because of
the sudden collapse in
the worldwide financial
markets the commission
itself fell through. The
music draws on three of
the pieces that I had
written for Jean in the
early days before we were
married, namely two
violin sonatas (she was a
violinist) and the
'Serenade' Opus 22 one of
my most popular pieces.
However the bulk of the
music is new, and the
quotes from these early
pieces are subtle and
merely passing
references, not at all
like the originals. After

compositions offer the
opportunity to truly work
on musical expression
without the technical
demands often placed on
students. I am often
disappointed by the
number of directors who
avoid lyrical works
because their students
"can't play that kind of
music without sounding
bad . . " As a result, I
have written a short
lyrical piece that uses
only six notes in all
instruments and is of
moderate length for young
musicians. It is my
sincere hope that this
work will open the door
that many ensembles have
hesitated to pass
through. This piece is
the second of three
included in Midnight
