The composition however is similar in quality and commitment to his other Mass in F major. Numerous manuscript copies all over Europe testify to the fortunate reception of the work in the eighteenth century. As was traditional in Naples, Pergolesi limited his composition to the “Kyrie” and “Gloria”. The festive character of the work is emphasized by the rich scoring for vocal soloists, five-part choir and a full orchestra of strings and winds. This edition, made with strict philological criteria, is based as its main source on a set of parts preserved partly in Naples, partly in Montecassino. These parts were made for aperformance conducted by the composer, who added various autograph annotations. Among the secondary sources are two period Neapolitan scores, today in Bologna and Dresden. Italian composer Franceso Paolo Tosti (1846-1916) wrote more than 350 songs, among which were favorites of famous singers, from Caruso and Tetrazzini in his day to Pavarotti and Carreras in ours. With a direct and simple grace and sensual Italianate vocal lines, his works were in some ways an art music reply to the Neapolitan folk tradition. Featuring 30 Tosti songs available for the first time in two keys, these editions present excellent material for teaching the basics of classical singing as well as for the recital stage. Par ROSSINI GIOACHINO. The “ Petite Messe Solennelle ” is the finest work of Rossini ’s late years. He composed it between 1863 and 1864 at the age of 71 as a commission for Countess Louise Pillet-Will for the consecration of her private chapel, where the work received its first performance in March 1864. Together with the “Stabat mater”, the mass is one of the composer’s most important sacred works. The unusual instrumentation with two Pianos and Harmonium is entirely in keeping with the Neapolitan Keyboard tradition of the 18th century which was cultivated in France in Rossini ’s day. It forms a distinct contrast to the style of large-scale sacred compositionsas written by, for example, Liszt and Bruckner. Rossini explained that he wrote the later Orchestral version of the work dating from 1867 out of concern that if he did not do this, other composers might orchestrate the mass too heavily in later arrangements.
