In 1942 Glenn
Miller voluntarily joined
the army and founded the
Glenn Miller Army Air
Force Band and with his
music he kept up the
morale of the troops. In
December 1944 he boarded
an aircraft in England
that would never reach
its destination (France)
- the plane was never
found. The patriotic
legend of this great
composer however lives on
in his music.
Pennsylvania 6-5000 was
one of the greatest
successes of his famous
band and is as popular
today as it was in the
1940s.

of Call, a suite of five
movements for two violins
and guitar was written
for the Trio Triento for
their New York debut.
Composed in the Summer of
1992, it was premiered in
April 1993. 1992 was the
500th anniversary of the
1492 expulsion of the
Jews from Spain and, of
course, Columbus' trip to
America. To commemorate
these important events, I
was commissioned by
organizations in 20 major
cities to write an
oratorio. The result was
Ever Since Babylon. The
musical material was
greatly influenced by
tunes from around the
Mediterranean region.
These Sephardic melodies
took on treat meaning for
me, and I took five of
them and expanded them
into these five pieces
which are actually
dances. I felt that the
combination of two
violins and guitar lent
itself well as a vehicle
for this music. The names
of the cities are used
because the tunes
originated in these
particular locations.
Marseille, a typical
provencale dance with
naturally changing meters
and a light, airy, touch.
Alexandria, much more
mysterious and languid,
reflecting the heat and
inertia of that glorious
city in slow though
sometimes steady
movement. Salonika, a
wild dance in typical
Greek fashion celebrating
a holiday with abandon.
The whirling movement
goes relentlessly from
beginning to end. Haifa
is represented by two
beautiful chant-like
pastoral tunes which
introduce the beauty and
luminous quality of this,
one of the most beautiful
parts in the Eastern
Mediterranean. Valencia,
the last, a tribute to
medieval Spain. The music
is a culmination of the
influences of the three
great cultures, Moslem,
Christian, and Jewish,
which flourished there
for hundreds of years. It
is an uplifting dance
with just a tinge of
sadness in the center,
since the Golden Age of
which the tune was a
part, had come to a
tragic end in 1492.

e is an obvious next of
kin to the two Clarinet
trios Vox In Rama and
Tattoo For Three. This
piece, however, combines
the roaring despair of
the first trio with the
twisted rhythmical
display of the latter.
The title, of course, is
a reference to the modern
street-dance electric
boogie, but the very
music itself takes the
naming most literally
indeed: formally and
rhythmically, after a
straightforward head-on
opening, it breaks into
isolated, jagged
fragments, winding up in
a bouncing piano cadenza.
Albeit not an obvious
piano concerto, the piano
part hovers in the front
line, the same way the
horizontal guy, ringing
himself on the pavement,
is doubtless an
eye-catcher to
passers-by. The springy
'body-language' that
kicks off the piece
suddenly stiffens and
freezes into hard-edged
blocks and the real
'dance of breaks' emerges
into focus. Break-dance
is commissioned by and
dedicated to Yvar
Mikhashoff and Spectrum.

Leicester around 1680,
was one of the few
English masters of
Baroque music who
achieved fame and enjoyed
a high standing beyond
the borders of his home
country instead of
within. He made his
fortune in Italy where he
seemed to have spent most
of his lifetime. It is
assumed that he returned
to England in 1731. He
died at an unknown place
around 1735.Valentine was

Polyphonie, die aus den
Rahmen dieser
heraustretend die
gleichzeitige Anwesenheit
unterschiedlicher
musikalischer
,,Dimensionen spuren
lasst. Das von mir mit
dem Begriff
,,Polydimensionalitat
beschriebene Phanomen ist
beinahe in allen Epochen
der Musikgeschichte
anzutreffen: im Fruhen
Mittelalter bei Perotin,
Vitry oder spater bei den
Komponisten der Ars
subtilior, dann in der
italienischen und
niederlandischen
Vokalpolyphonie, und in
den Choralvorspielen von
Bach ebenso wie spater
bei Ives oder Ligeti.
Dieses
,,Divergenzbedurfnis ist
auch in mehreren meiner
Werke wieder zu finden,
und vielleicht ist das
der entscheidende Grund,
warum mich diese
Bull-Stucke so sehr
faszinieren. Ein anderer
inspirierender Aspekt und
der eigentliche ,,Casus
belli der
Instrumentationsarbeit
ist das enorme, inharente
Farbpotenzial der Stucke.
Diese heterogenen
Linientexturen lassen
sich in der Kombination
der drei Instrumente wie
ungewohnlich flexible
Orgelregister mischen und
differenzieren. Es geht
aber noch einen Schritt
weiter: Durch die
besondere
Farbenverteilung treten
einzelne Linien- und
Motivfragmente aus der
ansonsten geschmeidig in
sich verwobenen Textur
plastisch hervor oder
eben in den Hintergrund.
Dieses Verfahren lasst in
das intimste Innere des
Werkes blicken und
verleiht ihm eine beinahe

Military Police, on the
occasion of their 200th
anniversary. The music is
based on a monument, a
torch that is
symbolically being passed
on by the fallen ones to

effects in a festive and
heroic style.

the oratorio Judas
Maccabaeus (1746) by
the composer George
Frideric Handel
(1685-1759). The heroic
epic based on the
Biblical story about
commander-in-chief Judas
Maccabaeus, was used by
Handel to celebrate the
English victory over the
rebellious Scottish. The
first performance of this
patriotic work - written
in the pleasing, rich
baroque style that
Handel’s music is
known for - was conducted
by himself; the success
was huge. The chorus
See the Conquering
Hero Comes was added
later, in 1748, drawn
from another oratorio
(Joshua).

written in 1990 for a
trio of young
instrumentalists and
first performed in the
USA. In the enigmatic
words of the composer:
the piece has no
beginning, no middle and
no end ... simply three
musicians telling each
other something and
dreaming a little ...
sound is arising and that
is enough .... The three
parts could be said to
interact -- the harp
creating a foundation,
and the flute and viola
forming a relief -- yet
they never really meet,
nor do they coalesce
within the overall
texture. Pitch and rhythm
are strictly organized,
but any attempt at
dramatic development has
been consciously avoided.
The result, according to
the composer, is a relief
like mass that moves and
sometimes stays still,
the density of the events
changing within and
between each section.
Despite the seemingly
amorphous nature of Un
sogno a tre, the
structural unity of the
piece is never in
doubt.
