Hans Abrahamsen 's Flowersongs (2012 version) for Flute, Oboe and Clarinet. Score. 'I wrote Flowersongs for three Flutes in the spring of 1973, when I was 20 years old. Looking back now, 40 years begins to feel like a really long time and sometimes I think that it is as if someone in 1973 is talking about a piece from 1933! But in spite of this long time, this is still a very important piece for me. In Flowersongs , along with works like '10 Preludes' for String Quartet and 'Stratifications' for Orchestra, I feel that I was on my way to finding my own voice in the middle of the music of the great Central European modernist tradition from the 50s and the reaction from the 60s of thenew simplicity, minimalism and the possibility of poly-stilisme. The English title Flowersongs links to the flower power movement and the hippie culture of the 60s and the early 70s, and the work is trying to find the power inherent in this imaginary world. Many of my later works have titles in German, for example 'Winternacht' (1976/78), 'Nacht und Trumpeten' (1981) and much later 'Schnee' (2006-08). If we think of Flowersongs in German, it must be Blumenlieder, and to me it now sounds suddenly very different, more romantic and into the world of Schumann. Perhaps it is also a way in which to hear the piece? Another thing is that the correct English title is Flower Songs (as two words) and not as one word like in German or Danish. This is perhaps the German connection, as I incorrectly wrote the title as one word, but perhaps it is also a kind of naivety, which is also part of the work. I cannot help but carry with me to this day the ideas from my early works. For example, there are clear links in this work from the 8th Prelude from '10 Preludes' and to Canon 2a from 'Schnee' from 2008. The Two Songs on American Poems were composed in late May and early June of 2011 by candlelight at my rustic waterfront cabin on a remote island off the northwest coast of Washington State. It was in this locale that I havecompleted a number of works over the years, including the Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium, Nocturnes, Canticle/O Vos Omnes and others. Prayer was written in memory of Michael Jasper Gioia, Dana and Mary Gioia's infant son, whosebrief life was tragically ended by SIDS.Mr. Gioia served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Arts from 2003-2010 and has authored several books of poems, numerous anthologies, articles, essays and two opera libretti. Amonghis many awards are the American Book Award and Presidential Citizens Medal. He currently holds the Judge Widney Chair of Poetry and Public Policy at the University of Southern California. Sure on this Shining Night was originallycomposed as a choral piece, the third movement of my Nocturnes on poems by Rilke, Neruda and Agee. Rod Gilfry, an international star of opera, recital and musical theater, premiered the mixed duet version with his daughter, Carin,in 2009. He is Professor of Vocal Studies at the USC Thornton School of Music. Both he and Mr. Gioia are national treasures. The Two Songs are designed as a pair but may be sung independently - when paired, Sure On This ShiningNight should begin immediatelyfollowing the final, sustained chord of Prayer with no break in between the songs. Both of these songs, premiered by Mr. Gilfry accompanied by the composer at a USC Visions & Voices tribute to DanaGioia on September 27, 2011, have their roots in the American musical theater and should be sung as such.

Sakari Ylivuori's introduction illuminates the history of the beloved songs: May 1, 1913 was cold and wet. Jean Sibelius (1865–1957) spent the day at home at Ainola composing two Christmas songs: settings of poems for children by Zachris Topelius. The two songs born on that chilly spring day were Nu står jul vid snöig port (Now stands Yule at the snowy gate) and Nu så kommer julen (Now is Christmas coming). He then put them together with three Christmas carols he had earlier composed and gave the set the imposing Opus number 1. He had previously considered giving the distinction to various other works, but from 1915 onwards the Five Christmas Songs had the honour of heading his catalogue. [...]
