La Gloria e Imeneo, RV 687, belongs to a group of so-called ‘French serenatas’ by Antonio Vivaldi, namely a series of works composed and performed between the mid-1710s and mid- 1720s of the eighteenth century in celebration of importantrecurrent and non-recurrent events relating to the Kingdom of France and its diplomatic representatives resident in Italy. This serenata was indeed commissioned from Vivaldi by the French ambassador in Venice, Jacques-Vincent Languet, Count of Gergy, on the occasion of the wedding of Louis XV to the Polish princess Maria Leszczyska, and was performed during a festa that took place in the ambassador’s garden on the evening of 12 September 1725. This critical edition is based on the autographscore held by Biblioteca Nazionale Universitaria of Turin. It also includes an Introduction that describes the genesis and the first performance of the Serenata, the state of the sources and its musical content. The critical edition includes anapparatus that records all the variants between the autograph score and the secondary collate sources, and a diplomatic- interpretative edition of the poetic text, inferred – since no libretto has come down to us – by the words underlaid to the notesin the manuscript of the serenata. Charles Gounod, still largely unknown at the time, also studied Bach?s works intensively ? his chorales, motets, and the preludes and fugues of the 48. He is said to have improvised his expressive, cantabile melody over the famous broken chords of Bach?s C-major Prelude BWV 846 from the 48 at a private performance in 1852. This arrangement would later became world famous when underlaid with the text of the Ave Maria. The atmospheric cycle 'Avant-dernières Pensées? (Next-to-last Thoughts) of 1915, with its underlaid words, likewise belongs to Satie's 'story pieces'. The curious performance instructions in these three miniatures, all based on ostinato figures, amusingly lampoon the ideal of Romantic expressiveness. This Urtext edition faithfully adheres to the sources and reflects the latest findings of Satie scholarship. Opera In Three Acts. Par SAINT-SAENS CAMILLE. Today, 'Samson et Dalila? is undoubtedly one of the best-known of Camille Saint-Saëns's thirteen operas, being more present in the repertoire of international stages than most other French 19th century compositions. During Saint-Saëns's lifetime, the opera was already regarded as the pinnacle of his dramatic stage works. The fact that the work's genesis and first performances nonetheless posed substantial difficulties is shown in this edition by Andreas Jacob and Fabien Guilloux (libretto edition). A detailed recount of this complex history, based on meticulous comparisons of all libretti and other musical sources, is the great merit of this critical edition. The edition contains the full score, edited versions of both original libretti, a historical Foreword (Fr/En/Ger), a Critical Commentary (Eng), facsimile pages of 'Livret de mise-en-scène? from the first Paris production, and a musical appendix containing the 'Air de Ballet? (which was inserted before the Bacchanale in act 3 for performances at the Paris Opéra). Following the publication of Dvorák's early set of love songs 'Cypresses?, all his other songs with piano accompaniment are now appearing in Urtext editions.'Songs II? includes the mature works from Dvorák's late period. The first great orchestral psalmMendelssohn's first great orchestral psalm took almost six years to complete, from the initial sketches and the first version of 1830 to the final version of 1835. Its premiere which took place at the Leipzig Gewandhaus did not take place until 1838.Unlike his other orchestral psalms, Mendelssohn took the Latin words from the Vulgate as his principal text which stems from Psalm 113. When he later prepared his own German translation, he made use of Psalm 115 from the Luther Bible.This edition by the leading Mendelssohn authority John Michael Cooper incorporates all the relevant sources.
