This music was composed
during my DAAD residency
in Berlin in October —
November 2007. If I were
to describe it in one
sentence, I would say
that it is based on the
idea of 'two things
seen/heard as one'. a2 (a
due) is a well-known term
to musicians; it is often
found in orchestral
scores indicating a given
passage that is to be
played by two instruments
of the same family.
Although violin and cello
could well be regarded as
'first cousins' of the
string family, the
literal implementation of
the term a2 as a
'compositional strategy'
would have been too much
(!) for a piece of
chamber music consisting
of no more than two
players. Not
surprisingly, this never
happens in this work; in
fact, the opposite is
true: regardless of how
it appears on paper (i.e.
on one or two staves),
the music for each
instrument is constantly
based on two layers. This
musical 'interpretation'
of the title gives an
indication as to how the
textural format of the
piece operates. However,
this was by no means the
only thought that
'preoccupied' my mind
whilst composing this
music. Berlin made a
profound impression on
me. The remnants of the
wall in Bernauer
Straße and the cobbled
two-stone line tracing
the wall across where it
once stood — a clear
reminder of what not so
long ago there were two
different worlds in one
city — provoked a
strikingly dramatic
effect. Border,
death-strip, killing, and
escape to freedom had a
particularly evocative
resonance, especially of
the time when I lived for
three years in a remote
town in Southern Albania
right at the border with
Greece. There, there was
a nameless road whose
destination the
authorities did not want
you to know, but the
locals called it the
'death-road'. In no way
programmatic, in this
context, the
extra-musical dimension
of the principal idea is
very much part of the
piece. Here, the musical
and extra-musical
interpretations cannot
easily be separated, for
they are two parts of the
same thing: a2. As if to
add another dimension to
this idea, there are two
versions of this piece:
for viola & cello and
violin & cello. The
first version was
premiéred by Garth Knox
and Rohan de Saram at the
2008 Intrasonus Festival
in Venice..

From
the outset my two vocal
versions of Mozart
orchestral works were
conceived as twins. Both
models shared not only
key of C minor, but the
fact that they were
composed towards the end
of Mozart's life seemed
to suggest they were
predestined to be
arranged as a pair; and
finally, their formal
structure and, above all,
the quotation of a cantus
firmus in each piece
seemed to bind these two
works together. It was
more difficult to
consider which text was
now suitable to render
vocally what previously
was an orchestral
movement. Naturally it
should stand out and
textually the movement
should be raised to
another level. The answer
was to use another
language here. Therefore,
I chose the texts Kyrie
eleison and Agnus Dei,
i.e., the opening and
concluding texts of the
Ordinary of the Mass. For
a performance of both
vocal versions in concert
I suggest joining them by
playing Mozart's great F
minor Fantasy K. 608 as
an instrumental
intermezzo between them.

known as the Tohono
O'odham. Tohono
O’odham means
Desert People. The Tohono
O’odham
reservation is the
location of the Quinlan
and Baboquivari
Mountains, which include
Kitt Peak, the Kitt Peak
National Observatory with
its numerous telescopes
and Baboquivari Peak.
Baboquivari is a
7,730-foot (2,356- meter)
granitic monolith located
about 60 miles southwest
of Tucson, Arizona. Part
of the peak lies in the
2,900,000-acre Tohono
O’odham
Reservation, the second
largest Indian
reservation in the United
States, while most of it
lies in the Baboquivari
Mountains Wilderness
Area.Baboquivari Peak is
the most sacred place to
the Tohono O'odham
people. It is the cen-
ter of the Tohono O'odham
cosmology and the home of
the creator,
I’itoi. According
to tribal legend, he
resides in a cave below
the base of the mountain
which is regarded by the
O'odham nation as the
navel of the world, a
place where the earth
opened and the people
emerged after the great
flood. Baboquivari Peak
is also sometimes
referred to as I'itoi
Mountain. In the native
O’odham language,
it is referred to as Waw
Kiwulik, meaning narrow
about the
middle.Baboquivari Peak
was mentioned in the
journals of Jesuit
missionary Padre Eusebio
Francisco Kino
(1645-1711), who made
many expeditions into
this region of the
Sonoran Desert. Beginning
in 1699, Kino introduced
Spanish culture and
Christianity to the
desert dwellers. He
established at least
twenty Spanish Missions
in the area, most of
which were in the Tohono
O'odham nation. The
Tohono O'odham tell the
story that at the
beginning of the Spanish
conquest of what is
present day Arizona, a
certain Spanish officer
and his men tried to dig
their way into
Baboquivari. Suddenly,
the ground under them
opened and Baboquivari
swallowed them. This
story has similarities to
that of Francisco
Vásquez de Coronado's
search for the Seven
Cities of Cibola and a
place called Quivira,
where, he was told, he
could get his hands on
unlimited quantities of
gold. The gold had a way
of disappearing while
they were
searching.Today, the
mountain offers a
strenuous climb for
experienced hikers. It
has a waist which was
overcome at one time
through the use of
ladders. Today's mountain
climbers get past the
indentation that
encircles the mountain by
using ropes where
necessary.

114 is certainly one of
Carulliâ??s most
important didactic works,
so much so that the
author himself made a
point of writing in the
second edition of his
famous Method op. 27
(1819): The student, when
moving on to the second
part, must continue to
practise on the easy
pieces which are to be
found in opus nos. 50,
15, 35, 36, 93, 7 and
above all in opus 114. He
maintained this
indication also in later
editions of the Method
itself, unlike what he
did with other
collections of studies
which were no longer
recommended. The
purpose of op. 114, in
particular of the
preludes, is clearly
explained by the author
himself in the preface of
op. 265: I have already
offered preludes in my
opus nos. 71 and 114 to
people, but they serve to
study and learn to play
all sorts of difficult
passages, to practise
modulating, and learn to
improvise on the guitar.
Carulli seems to want to
provide his students with
a large handbook of
formulas typical of his
musical writing and he
does so by making use of
the keys which, in his
opinion, are most
congenial to the guitar.
In his Method he points
out: Each instrument has
its favourite keys: the
guitar can be played in
all keys, but the best
ones are: A major and
minor, D major and minor,
E major and minor, C, G,
F. The others are
difficult; [â?¦].
However, some of the
difficult ones are
included but only in the
fourth part. Of course,
the easiness of a key
essentially depends on
the possibility of
extensive use of the open
strings, especially in
the low notes, ensuring
the accompaniment on the
main degrees. This
edition has some unique
features. First of all,
it is the first complete
modern edition of
Carulliâ??s op. 114; it
presents an important
critical apparatus in
which the Carullian
technique is presented
and analysed; finally,
Carulli's original
fingering is indicated in
the score (including that
of the thumb of the left
hand) and the missing one
was obtained from the
comparison of his other
fingerings present in
other works. All this
allows an easy and
complete reading both for
those who perform the
pieces following the
nineteenth-century
performance practice with
a historical instrument,
and for those who play a
modern instrument.

for the planned first
edition of his Hungarian
Peasant Songs in 1914,
Bartók wrote that
âthe melodies

folksongs in the truest
sense of the word; more
precisely, peasant
songs.â Bartók
initially withdrew this
work from publication,
however, and added new
pieces to it using folk
music he had collected in

edition was only finally
published in 1920. The

The
Divertimento K. 247 in
F-flat major was composed
for the name day of
Countess Antonia Lodron,
and was first performed
on 18 June 1776 in
Salzburg. The little
March K. 248 was
presumably used to
accompany the arrival and
departure of the
musicians on that
occasion - it shares the
same date of composition
as the Divertimento, is
in the same key, and is
scored for the same
instruments. Mozart later
returned several times to
this “First Lodron
night musicâ€, and
posterity appreciated it
too: the Divertimento was
published just a few
years after his death,
and was also available in
numerous 19th century
copies. The only
authorised sources for
our Urtext edition,
however, were the two
autographs. Here,
incidentally, the lowest
part is designated
“Basso,â€
which leaves open the
question as to whether it
was to be played by a
cello, a double bass or
both - a typical case of
