by Carl Sandburg in 1916
when Chicago was the

When bass trombonist Sun
He commissioned Garrop,
he mentioned a deep love
for Chicago, adding,
“I remember the
first time I walked on
the street in Chicago, by
the corner of Michigan

felt the energy of this

Those images inspired
Garrop to write a piece
that conveys the beating
pulse of the city, as
well as its
grandeur. Stormy,
Husky, Brawling takes its
name from the 4th line of
the poem Chicago, written
by the American poet Carl
Sandburg. Dating from
1916, the city of Chicago
at that time served as
the heart of the
meatpacking and railroad
industries. The
poem’s lines
mingle the dark
underbelly of the
city:And they tell me you

is: On the faces of
women   Â

have seen the marks of
wanton hunger.with
immense pride felt by its
inhabitants:Â Â
  Come and show
me another city with
lifted head singing so
proud to be aliveÂ
    and
course and strong and
cunning.As a Chicagoan
myself, I find much of
Sandburg’s
unabashed view of the
city very appealing and
still relevant over a
hundred years later.When
bass trombonist Sun He
commissioned me for a
solo trombone piece, he
mentioned his deep love
for Chicago. He wrote to
me in an email:“I
remember the first time I
walked on the street in
Chicago, by the corner of
Michigan and Roosevelt,
and how I felt the energy
of this city almost
brought my blood to a
boil...â€His words
inspired me to write a
piece that conveys the
beating pulse of the
city, as well as its
grandeur. Carl
Sandburg’s poem
became the perfect
inspiration to tell the
story of the pride Sun He
and I have for
Chicago.Sun He has
dedicated Stormy, Husky,
Brawling to Jane Addams
and the Hull House of
Chicago. Ms. Addams

worker, philosopher, and
author, who opened the
Hull House in 1889. She

of three movements of my
Mythology Symphony, which
I arranged for large wind
ensemble. The
arrangements of The
Lovely Sirens and
Penelope Waits were
commissioned by James
Ripley and Carthage
College for the Carthage
Wind Orchestra's 2017
Japan tour. I added
Pandora Undone to
complete the set; Stephen

the entire Suite in
February 2017. Movement
1: The Lovely Sirens The
Sirens were sea nymphs,
usually pictured as part
woman and part bird, who
lived on a secluded
island surrounded by
rocks. Their enchanting
song was irresistible to
passing sailors, who were
lured to their deaths as
their ships were
destroyed upon the rocks.
The Lovely Sirens
presents three ideas: the
Sirens' beautiful song,
an unfortunate group of
sailors whose course
takes them near the
island, and the disaster
that befalls the sailors.
The sailors' peril is
represented by the Morse
code S.O.S. signal (three
dots, three dashes, and
three dots--represented
musically by short and
long rhythms). The S.O.S.
signal grows increasingly
more insistent and
distressed as it becomes
obvious that the sailors,
smitten with the voices
of the Sirens, are headed
for their demise.
Movement 2: Penelope
Waits This quiet movement
represents Queen
Penelope, the faithful
wife of Odysseus, as she
patiently waits twenty
years for her husband's
return from fighting the
Trojan Wars. Penelope
herself is represented as
an oboe. She is
accompanied by the
ensemble as she keeps at
bay the suitors who wish
to marry her and inherit
her riches. Movement 3:
Pandora Undone This
movement is, in turns,
both lighthearted and
serious. The music
depicts a young, naive
Pandora who, while
dancing around her house,
spies a mysterious box.
She tries to resist
opening it, but her
curiosity ultimately gets
the best of her. When she
cracks the lid open and
looks inside, all evils
escape into the world.
Dismayed by what she has
done, she looks inside
the box once more. She
discovers hope still in
the box and releases it
to temper the escaped
evils and assuage
mankind's new
burden. The Mytholo

minor. Nordanvind
is a tour de force
symphonic rhapsody that
is built on three
Scandinavian folk songs.
Composer Carl Strommen
has composed these
Viking-influenced
melodies into a concert
setting that brings out
all of the history of the
Scandinavian people. The
piece is at times bold
and aggressive, at other
times beautiful. Carl
employs all of the
instrumental colors of
the concert band to
create a new work for
more advanced
ensembles. Modern
Scandinavians are
descendants of the
Vikings, an adventuresome
people who were known for
their love of the sea,
their naval prowess, and
as fierce fighters . The
Scandinavian Vikings were
warriors from Denmark,
Norway, and Sweden who
traded, raided and
settled in various parts
of Europe, Russia, the
North Atlantic islands,
and the northeastern
coast of North America
.Starting around 1850,
over one million Swedes
left their homeland for
the United States in
search of religious
freedom and open farm
land . Augustana College
was founded in 1860 by
graduates of Swedish
universities and is
located on the
Mississippi River in Rock
Island, Illinois . Home
of the
“Vikings,â€
Augustana College is the
oldest Swedish- American
institution of higher
learning in the United
States . This powerful
and lively piece takes
inspiration from Swedish
history and from Swedish
folk songs and hymns
.Havsdrake (Dragon of the
Sea)The Nordanvind or
“North Windâ€
blows a cold wind during
a journey of a group of
courageous Viking rowers
. The
“Dragon-shipâ€
or long ships designed
for raiding and war was a
sophisticated, fast ship
able to navigate in very
shallow water . To
musically portray these
magnificent seafaring
vessels, the director is
encouraged to use an
Ocean Drum (or a rain
stick) during the
introduction . Wind
players may consider
blowing air through their
instruments to suggest
the North wind . Adding
men’s voices to
accompany the haunting
low brass and percussive
“rowerâ€
sounds can be helpful in
creating the dark and
ominous portrayal of
Viking adventurers
.Slangpolska efter Byss -
KalleIn Sweden, a
“polska†is a
partner dance where the
dancers spin each other
(släng in Swedish
“to sling or
tossâ€) .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is attributed to
Byss-Kalle, who was a
notable Swedish folk
musician, specifically a
nyckelharpa player .
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle is a traditional
“polskaâ€
dance song most often
played on the Nyckelharpa
or keyed fiddle and is
commonly heard in pubs
and at festive events
throughout Sweden .
Approximately 10,000
nyckelharpa players live
in Sweden today, and the
Swedish and the American
Nyckelharpa Associations
are dedicated to this
Swedish National
instrument . The director
is encouraged to share
video and audio examples
of the nyckelharpa
playing the original
Slangpolska efter Byss -
Kalle .Tryggare Kan Ingen
Vara (Children of the
Heavenly Father)Tryggare
Kan Ingen Vara Is a
traditional Swedish
melody, possibly of
German roots, and was
believed to be arranged
as a hymn by the Swedish
hymn writer, Karolina
Wilhelmina Sandell-Berg
(1832–1903) . As a
daughter of a Swedish
Lutheran minister, she
began writing poems as a
teenager and is said to
have written over 1,700
different texts . There
are two different
accounts as to the
inspiration for this hymn
. The first story is that
Lina (as she was called)
wrote the hymn to honor
her father and to say
thank you to him for
raising her and
protecting her . A second
belief is of her
witnessing the tragic
death of her father . She
and her father were on a
boat, when a wave threw
her father overboard . It
was said that the
profound effect of
watching her father drown
is what caused Lina to
write the text to this
hymn . Although this is a
treasured song to people
of Swedish descent
everywhere, it speaks to
all people about a father
tending and nourishing
his children, and
protecting them from evil
