My
quartets composed between
1997 and 2005 were
conceived as an
interconnected,
self-contained cycle of
works ranging from the
(in my opinion) quasi
revolutionary Quartet No.
1 to the Quartet No. 5
entitled Versuch über
die Fuge [Attempt at a
Fugue]. The Quartet No. 6
– Study on Beethoven
– composed fourteen
years after No. 5 should
be conceived as a new
approach and the
commencement of a new
quartet cycle with an
unknown ending. All that
can be said is that the
subsequent quartets will
be devoted to an intense
study of Ludwig van
Beethoven's unique and
consummate artistry of
quartet composition.
Despite a reverence for
Beethoven at a very early
stage, my own
compositions have steered
well clear of this
unapproachable cosmos
with the exception of my
concert overture Con
brio. The perhaps only
link with the five
quartets of the first
cycle of quartets is the
single-movement structure
of the thirty-minute
Quartet No. 6. The
fundamental coordinates
have otherwise been reset
to zero. This is
therefore also a 'study'
in a literal sense. In
the Quartet No. 6, I set
out with a state of
tonality displaying
significant extensions
whose centrifugal forces
are barely containable.
My focus is the detection
of the inherent
gravitation of tonality,
including phenomenons
such as
tension/relaxation,
suspension/resolution and
fixation/deviation. From
a formal aspect, the work
is too experimental and
unsentimental for
explorations in a
nostalgic-romantic sense.
On the contrary, tonality
or at least its
fundamental assumptions
are initially set down in
the sense of a study or
test assembly in order to
permit subsequent
experimentation,
variation and the
formulation of exceptions
with the desire and firm
conviction that it is
possible to express
something innovative and
never previously heard
with this seemingly
exhausted fundamental
material. I have been
repeatedly astonished by
the unfolding in the
progression of this piece
which has taken me to
unknown locations,
especially from a formal
aspect. I am fascinated
to see what forms the
subsequent quartets in
this Beethoven study�
cycle will lead me to.
The Quartet No. 6 has
been created in close
artistic and friendly
cooperation with
Anne-Sophie Mutter and
she is the dedicatee of

extremely useful tool for
all aspiring and

players. In a common

styles, Dan demonstrates
and clearly explains his
perspective of lead and
section playing. The
trumpet sectional
quartets by Steve Guttman
are excellent and the
execution of these etudes
on the CD as played by
Dan Collette playing all
4 parts is flawless and
nothing short of
inspiring. This work
should prove itself to be
required listening and
reading for all serious
trumpet players.

BACH TO THE FUTUREFor
many years I have been
specially fascinated by
three of the preludes of
Bach's Well-tempered
Piano, and I wish with
this concerto-version for
percussion-duo and
orchestra to highlight
some of the structural
aspects of these pieces:
It is my belief that
there is a tradition in
the music history, that
makes it possible to let
certain germs in an
earlier period unfold
into new, but not
heterogenious, dimensions
of a perhaps several
hundred years later phase
of the tradition.This
concerto is a result of
several years
collaboration with Uffe
Savery and Morten Friis
(Safri-Duo), as well in
original compositions -
(Resonances,
Repercussion, Resume in
EchoZone I-III) as in
arrangements of the 3
Bach preludes, preparing
for the enormous
stylistic challenges of
this work.A few
introductory comments to
each movement:I Movement:
The archetypal sequence
of broken chords within
C-major has established
itself as almost a
cultural code, allowing
the composer of 1996 to
tell his tale-in-tones
only by stressing and
colouring the tones in
the original piece
without changing the
pitches or (relative)
durations as a
'palimpsest' containing
as well the old as the
new musical tale
simultaneously. Later in
the movement, this
singleline is multiplied
by the, till then
discrete, but permanently
pervading, proportion -
throughout the piece -
very close to the 'Golden
Section'(= 3:5:8.t.i:8
before repetition, 5
before starting anew from
the deepest tone, 3 as
the rest etc. unchanged).
The 3 tonal levels as
well as the 3 relative
speeds are treated
according to these
proportions for certain
passages, but even in
those the main focal
point is directed at the
freely invented melody
(by me) incarnating
itself solely by the
unpermutad sequels of the
original prelude.II
Movement: One feature of
the F sharp-prelude
pervades all the six
minutes-long second
movement: A 4 times
identical rhythmic
pattern = 6:4:3:2:3:4:6 -
as an hourglass-shaped
timeshape - inspired me
by the closeness of this
pattern to a shape within
the infinity-drumming of
my invention, called
Wide-Fan and Narrow-Fan ,
referring to pattern
consisting of
8:4:2:1:2:4:8, the
familiarity with the
above - quoted one being
obvious. New and old
elaborations of this
pattern-pair permeates
the movement, especially
since the Safri-Duo by
their performance of my
Repercussion had
augmented my appetite for
including this idiom in a
wider context:III
Movement: Without the
existence of the
d-minor-prelude I doubt
that I would have dared
to write a work like
this, since it is the
inexhaustible, rare
quality and pecularity of
this piece, which has
stimulated my feeling of
wonder and 'modernity'
(or: eternity!) of this
piece, of which I know of
no equal in its special
respect: the perpetual
ambiguity of melodic
foothold in the rhythmic
ostinato of a broken
descending triad, co.

The theme of
this work is the history
of the town of
Grafenrheinfeld (Bavaria,
Germany) in the twentieth
century, a town that is
now mainly associated
with its nuclear plant.
The German word for this
is Kraftwerk, which can
be divided into the words
Kraft (power) and Werk
(work). In this
composition, it is a
metaphor for the ?work?
that can be realised
through ?power? in a
negative way (war) and in
a positive way
(reconstruction).
Musically speaking, power
also plays an important
role in this work, as
opposed to vulnerability,
the sense of loss and the
insecurity about the lost
identity. Based on the
text of Lied der Franke
?Kraftwerk? is a
powerfully descriptive
work thatwill add energy
to any concert.
De geschiedenis
van Grafenrheinfeld
(Beieren, Duitsland) in
de twintigste eeuw vormt
het thema van dit werk.
Deze plaats wordt nu
voornamelijk geassocieerd
met zijn kerncentrale.
Het Duitse woord hiervoor
is Kraftwerk,
datje kunt onderverdelen
in de woorden Kraft
(kracht) en Werk (werk).
In deze compositie is het
dan ook een metafoor voor
het ‘werk’
dat door
‘kracht’
wordt gerealiseerd, in
negatieve zin (oorlog) en
in positieve zin
(wederopbouw).
Krachtspeelt ook in
muzikaal opzicht een
belangrijke rol in dit
werk, geplaatst tegenover
kwetsbaarheid.
Der
Titel Kraftwerk
steht zunächst für
ein Kraftwerk im
wörtlichen Sinn,
beschreibt aber zugleich
die Bedeutung der
einzelnen Begriffe Kraft
und Werk im positiven und
negativen Sinn. Krieg,
Zerstörung,
Verzweiflung und Trauer,
aber andererseits auch
Frieden, Hoffnung,
Wiederaufbau, Zuversicht
und Sorglosigkeit sind
die Bilder und
Gefühle, die Jacob de
Haan in seiner
Komposition
heraufbeschwört. Ein
kontrastreiches Werk, das
bleibenden Eindruck
hinterlässt!

Quite difficult, this
piece would be perfect
for recitals and contest,
and can be played by
advanced players.
Starting slowly, the
first half of the piece
evolves into a Piu vivo
part. The second half of
the work is a rapid
Allegro theme (tempo
144-152), followed by a
slower part and the
Allegro theme played
again ?a tempo?, before
introducing the close in
harmonies. Joseph Edouard
Barat (1882-1963)
composed numerous pieces
for Wind instruments and
Piano accompaniment such
as 'Andante and Allegro'
or 'Introduction and
Dance' among many

re Dalvimare, born in
1770, in Dreux
(Eure-et-Loir), from a
distinguished family,
learnt music as an
entertainment art, and
was obliged to make it a
resource for his
existence, after the
troubles of the
Revolution in 1789. He
had acquired a remarkable
talent for the harp; when
he arrived in Paris he
made a very good
impression. Then, man of
the world, knowledgeable
in many fields, which is
rare for a musician, he
was welcome everywhere,
and very soon came in
friendly terms with some
of the most renowned
artists and men of
letters of his times. The
marriage certificate of
the poet Legouve (15
pluviose of the year XI,
or February 1803, 12th
municipality of Paris),
shows that Dalvimare was
one of his best men and
that at the time he was
thirty-two years old. He
became harpist of the
Opera in the year VIII
(1800), and was
definitively confirmed in
the month of fructidor of
the year IX. At the time
of the institution of the
emperor Napoleon's
private music, M.
Dalvimare was appointed
as his harpist. In
September 1807 he
obtained the title of
harp master of the
empress Josephine. A
lucky change of his
fortune allowed this
artist to renounce to
practise his talent for
living, he resigned from
all of his positions on
March, 12th, 1812, and he
retired in Dreux, where
he still was living in
1837. For a peculiar
weakness, he does not
like to speak about his
artist career, which had
been entirely honourable,
and he would like to
forget his success too.
His first composition was
a symphonie concertant
for harp and horn, which
he composed with Frederic
Duvernoy, and published
in the year VII (1798);
notwithstanding, he
counted as his first opus
a collection of romances
with accompaniment of
piano or harp, which he
later published with
Pleyel.
In 1809
Dalvimare composed, for
the theatre Feydeau, a
one-act opera-comique
called The Marriage for
Imprudence. The music was
weak; the work did not
succeed, and people used
to say that the greatest
imprudence had been the
one of the authors who
had it performed.
Nevertheless, the score
of this opera was
published in Paris by
erard. (Francois-Joseph
Fetis).
