Note by the composer:'Triple Quartet is for string quartet and two pre-recorded quartets, or three live string quartets with no pre-recording. The piece is in three movements, fast-slow-fast, and is organized harmonically on four dominant chords in minor keys a minor third apart: E minor, G minor, Bb minor, C# minor and then returning to E minor to form a cycle.The first movement goes through this harmonic cycle twice with a section about one minute long on each of the four dominat chords. The result is a kind of variation form. Rhythmically the first movement has the second and third quartet playing interlocking chords while the first quartet plays longer melodies in canon between the first violin and viola against the second violin and cello. The slow movement is more completely contrapuntal with a long slow melody in canon eventually in all 12 voices. It stays in E minor throughout. The third movement resumes the original fast tempo, maintains the harmonic chord cycle but modulates back and forth between keys more rapidly. After Mark Wallinger. Par TURNAGE MARK-ANTHONY. This 25 minute work was jointly commissioned by Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonie Essen and the Trans-Siberian Art Festival. It was first performed on 19 October 2017 at the Lutfi Kirdar International Convention and Exhibition Centre, Istanbul, by Daniel Hope and Vadim Repin (violins) with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Sascha Goetzel. It is comprised of four movements, fast-slow-fast-slow and moves through dramatic dialogue between the violins and orchestra. The lyrical dance elements develop in intensity as the piece progresses and explores a wide range of textures. Version for piano and string quintet. Par HAKIM NAJI. This concerto follows the structure of the Italian overture – fast, slow, fast. The first movement is a sonata form without development, based on three themes, rhythmical, oriental, waltz respectively. The second movement is characterized by an initial theme with Chopinesque-contours, followed by a more agitated theme and a choral-theme accompanied by a carillon in the treble register of the piano. The recapitulation includes a cadenza, Variation on the choral-theme. The finale is a rondo with a cheerful refrain twirling as a tarentella. Ist festive and dance-like episodes are combined with the perpetuum mobile of the refrain and its variations and the work is rounded off with a brillant, luminous coda.
