note: This concerto
contains a lot of
technical and structural
stuff that I have
forgotten all about now.
Without it though, the
piece would have been a
big mess of emotions,
since it was written
while my family and I
were taking care of my
mother as she was
terminally ill. I
recognize it having
become a kind of rondo.
The music wanted a place
to return to, and perhaps
it is due to the fact
that my mother was
alwayssomeone I could
return to when everything
else was exploding. In
the end, the rondo dies
and the music goes
somewhere else, like all
mothers. $72.00 - Voir plus => AcheterDélais: 2 to 3 weeks | | |

minor. Triangle of
the Tempest is a
fast-moving composition
with interesting rhythmic
challenges and dynamic
color shifts. Starting
with syncopated figures
over a repeated
eight-measure
progression, the piece
builds in intensity as
more sections and layers
are added. The second
part changes tone and is
led by a heroic violin
melody with a soaring
cello obligato. The
themes intertwine and the
material develops into a
dramatic conclusion with
a final explosive
ensemble hit.
Action-packed and full of
rhythmic drive, this
piece is a good choice
for contest or festival
performance. An
up-tempo 3â„4 piece
in E minor, Triangle of
the Tempest features
inviting rhythmic
challenges, provocative
melodic variations and
dynamic color shifts .The
A-section is based on a
repeating eight-measure
harmonic progression with
punctuated open voicings
and syncopated figures .
Each section builds in
intensity as new elements
are added in subsequent
eight-measure increments
. Rhythmically, the
pattern in the A-section
(mm . 1–36)
follows a two-measure
form: the first of the
two measures has a dotted
quarter-eighth syncopated
figure, and the rhythms
in the second measure
fall primarily on the
beats . After the main
eight-measure pattern is
established, the A-melody
and its variations are
introduced on top of it
.A two-measure build (mm
. 35–36),
highlighted by fast
moving ensemble triplet
figures, propels the
piece as it crescendos
into the jubilant
B-section (mm .
37–52), changing
tone and moving to the
relative G major . The
violins carry the soaring
melody atop sonorous
major chords in the mid
and low strings .
Rhythmically, the
alternating syncopated
measure/non-syncopated
measure form continues
through this section
.Returning to the
dramatic E minor
A-section phrases in mm .
53–86, the piece
shifts to the original
eight-measure harmonic
progression with melodic
variations in the violins
over the top . After
reprising the B-section
(mm . 87–102),
intertwining motifs at m
. 103 offer a variation
on the A-theme where the
melodic entrances happen
at one-measure intervals
.The tempo slows slightly
and the tone changes
again in the flowing and
magical C-section at m .
123 as the piece moves
again to the relative G
major . Repeating lyrical
legato violin lines
create the musical
background for a majestic
viola melody, featured in
mm . 126–146 . A
brief fanfare statement
with motifs spread
throughout the orchestra
at m . 153, prepares the
return to E minor and the
A-theme in mm .
160–193 .Measure
194 introduces an E-pedal
point and tension builds,
ramping up emotionally to
the ending . The ensemble
thunders at m . 202 as
the violins and violas
begin a four-measure
syncopated
question/answer section
with the cellos and
basses . The phrases
crescendo and build for
another four measures at
m . 206, setting up the
driving unison, tutti
figures at m . 211 and a
final explosive hit on
the downbeat of m . 212

9781622774548. We
all need creativity in
our lives. It is key to
our happiness. Music,
according to author Clint
Randles, is one of the
best ways to feed our
longing for self-growth
through engagement in
creative processes. And
music brings us together
for the purpose of making
beauty with sound. It
provides us with a
pathway to the good life.
In To Create, Randles
answers the critical
question: What can I do
with my time that will
give me the best chance
at achieving daily
happiness? This amazing
book unpacks what it
means to engage in
creative processes. Since
story is the best way of
feeding our imagination,
the book unfolds by way
of life stories that
express the
author’s unique
perspective of the
hero’s journey.
Along the way, Randles
inspires us to think
about creativity and
music as a pursuit that
is not only truly worthy,
but accessible. He
addresses rules for
creative performance,
what we can learn from
exceptional musicians and
teachers, the link
between spirituality and
creativity, understanding
our own stories in light
of the meta-story, and
the art of trust and
starting small. To Create
is a book that is unlike
anything written on the
topic—entertaining
, wise, inspiring, and
layered. It is for anyone
who is interested in
pursuing creativity
through music but
can’t quite figure
out how or where to
start. States Randles:
“It is my hope that
you will be able to

through music, that you
will be inspired To

Randles, PhD, is

resonating stories, To
Create is a profoundly
pedagogical book about
potential pathways into
life’s learnings
through and in music. To
Create seeks and embraces
the value embodied in the
multiple, individual, and
sociocultural authoring
of diverse creativities.
By analogising the good
life

achievement that
seamlessly blends how-to

Randles takes readers on
a real and figurative

demonstrates how to live
life to its fullest by
embracing creativity and

readers through deeply

practical, tangible and

It’s all about the
power of three, weaving
through everything the
vital, intangible element
of spirituality, energy,

lens of his experiences
as a musician and

celebrates relentlessness

Professor Randles’
stimulating book prompts
memory of the seminal

the logic of the process
of change—change
that is driven by
knowledgeable and
innovative entrepreneurs.
The immediate application
of Randles’
suggested dynamic
creativity processes
applies to both teacher

although both he and
Schumpeter advance
general ideas in
creativity designed to
achieve the highest level
of human growth.

Every new entry brings an
increase in tempo. Only
when they play together,
though, is the real
'Vivace unleashed. From
then on, it is only in
the 'largamente' sections
and a lyrical middle
section (cantabile) that
the racing bass figure
pauses for a while. The

''Stabat
Mater'' by Karol
Szymanowski for solo
voices, chorus and
orchestra, Op. 53, is one
of the most famous and,
at the same time, most
personal works of the
composer, making its
appeal to the audience
through the depth of its
expression and sheer
artistry. The first
sketches of the work were
made in the spring of
1925, while work on the
full score occupied the
composer from 20 January
to 2 March 1926. Józef
Jankowskis Polish
translation of the
medieval sequence formed
the basis of the
composition. This text,
which was simple in a
folk-like way, devoid of
pathos but full of
religious zeal,
harmonized perfectly from
the poetic point of view
with the composers
creative design. In an
interview for the monthly
Muzyka Szymanowski
stated: ''in its Polish
vestments that eternal,
naive hymn was filled for
me with its own immediate
expressive content; it
became something painted
in colours which were
recognisable and
comprehensible as
distinct from the black
and white of the archaic
original'' (''A Footnote
to Stabat Mater'', Muzyka
1926, Nos. 11/12). In the
score, the Latin text is
given beside the Polish
text, making it possible
for the work to be
performed more easily by
foreign performers. In
this work, the universal
tradition of the
Christian church was
fused with the Polish
religious tradition. The
composer creates the
religious folk-like
climate primarily through
the character of the
melodies which are akin
to to the plainchant
melodies to the text of
Stabat Mater (the
sequence, and especially
the hymn) and their
paraphrases in Polish
religious songs (e.g. Sta
a Matka Bole ciwa [The
Dolorous Mother was
standing]) as well as
motifs from Polish Lenten
songs and Gorzkie ale
(Bitter Laments).
Szymanowski did not
introduce them as
quotations, but
intersperses the melodic
lines, which are more
fully developed and
frequently highly
chromatic, with diatonic
phrases, based on modal
scales. They appear in
all the movements of the
work determining its
cohesion. In dividing the
twenty-stanza text into
separate segments,
Szymanowski created a
six- movement cantata. He
took care to distinguish
between the emotional
shades of the various
movements, varying his
selection of solo voices
(soprano, contralto,
baritone), the voices of
the chorus (female or
mixed) and the orchestral
forces. In the first and
third movements the
lyrical idiom prevails;
the first movement,
portraying the Mother of
God at the foot of the
cross, has a narrative
character, whereas the
third is a kind of prayer
from a man who
sympathizes with, and who
wishes to be associated
with Mater Dolorosas
pain. In these movements
only the female voices
are used (soprano,
contralto and female
chorus), while the
orchestra is employed in
a chamber style,
sometimes drawing on solo
accompanying parts (e.g.
the beginning of the
third movement). The
fourth movement, which
continues the mood of
prayerful contemplation,
is designed for soprano
and contralto solo as
well as unaccompanied
chorus. On the other
hand, the second and
fifth movements,
involving the
participation of solo
baritone and the full
chorus and orchestra, are
similar with regard to
forces and their dramatic
character, which is
austere in expression,
harsh in tone, and
markedly dissonant. Here
grand climaxes appear
with powerful orchestral
tutti. The sixth movement
crowns the whole. The
lyrical, soft melody of
the solo soprano at the
beginning is gradually
strengthened by the
addition of the female
chorus and the solo
contralto, and in the
final section, the solo
baritone as well as the
tutti of chorus and
orchestra. The
conclusion, subdued and
full of concentration,
suggests the introvert
character of the
experience as opposed to
its dramatic pathos.
Stabat Mater by
Szymanowski is part of a
long tradition of
compositions based on the
text of the medieval
sequence - ranging from
polyphonic works by
Josquin des Prés and
Palestrina to the
romantic Stabat by
Giuseppe Verdi and Anton
n Dvo ák. And it was
perhaps because of his
consciousness of this
tradition that
Szymanowski used
stylizing devices in the
spirit of early music.
The archaization
manifests itself not only
in the character of the
melodies and their modal
framework, but also in
the harmonies (with their
predominance of triads,
open fourths and fifths
chords and doubled
thirds), the simple
rhythms as well as the
texture of the choruses
(esp. the fourth
movement). The composer
does not, however,
imitate the style of any
specific historical
epoch, but combines
resources taken from
early music with modern
tonal and harmonic
techniques. Archaization
in Stabat Mater serves,
moreover, a symbolic
function; in evoking the
many-centuries old
tradition of church
music, it emphasizes the
universal nature of the
idea contained in the
text of the sequence,
while the re-reading of
the text by the composer
gives the work its
individual features.

NEWBURYPORT SONATA is
Eric Ewazen’s first
recital work for tuba.
The composer’s preface
tells us, “This work
was written during the
year of Covid quarantine,
and it reflects the
strong emotions of that
time. The final movement
is full of energy and a
return to life! There is
almost a march-like feel
to the music, with a
lively and even playful
rhythm as the tuba lines
are bold, strong, and
ultimately energetic and

also available as
NEWBURYPORT QUINTET for
Tuba and String
Quartet. The
Newburyport Sonata began
life as the NEWBURYPORT
QUINTET for Tuba and
Strings, commissioned by
David Yang, director of
the Newburyport Chamber
Music Festival in
Massachusetts. The
quintet version was
premiered by members of
the festival, featuring
tuba soloist Scott
Devereaux of the U.S.
Army Field Band.I’ve
long been a fan of low
brass instruments and had
the pleasure of attending
the very first
Tuba/Euphonium Convention
at Indiana University,
which was a real
celebration of low brass!
As a former cellist
(I’ve long been a fan
of instruments with a
tenor/bass range, the
world of euphoniums and
tubas) I wanted to write
a piece showcasing both
the wonderful virtuosity
the instrument is capable
of, and also its
expressive lyricism,
which shaped the
NEWBURYPORT QUINTET. This
adaptation for tuba and
piano consequently has a
wide variety of musical
gestures and moods,
exploring the color of
the instruments.The first
movement is in compound
rhythm, with a lilting,
energetic 6/8 feel
supporting a cantabile
line in the Tuba. In a
traditional form, there
are contrasting themes,
sometimes playful and
sometimes heroic, which
share a lively, rolling
rhythm. The second
movement is a heartfelt
appassionata, with the
Tuba sometimes singing in
a soulful minor key, and
sometimes expressing
powerful emotions.This
work was written during
the year of Covid
quarantine, and it
reflects the strong
emotions of that time.
The final movement is
full of energy and a
return to life! There is
almost a march-like feel
to the music, with a
lively and even playful
rhythm as the tuba lines
are bold, strong, and
ultimately energetic and
exciting.In writing this
piece, I collaborated
greatly with Scott, who
played through passages I
wrote and gave me
technical suggestions on
how to flatter the
gorgeous sound of the
Tuba, allowing it to
really sing!The quintet
version is also available
