The latest volume of Chamber Music for Violoncellos contains four sacral works, two of which were arranged for cello quartet by the editor of the series, Árpád Pejtsik. Both Angelus!, Liszt's piano piece of ethereal beauty, and the Kyrie of Mozart's Requiem, an irresistibly surging four-part fugue, are magnificent when played with the immensely rich sound of the four cellos. The second part of the volume contains a pair of inspired works by two prominent cellists and composers of the 19th century: Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Fitzenhagen's Consecration Hymn and Friedrich Grützmacher's Ave Maria. While an instrumental skill of at least intermediate level is required for playing the upper parts due to the use of higher positions, the lower parts can be performed by beginner cellists. Par FAURE GABRIEL. This edition of Salve Regina by Gabriel Faure is a version of this Marian hymn for a SABT accompanied by the Piano or the Organ, arranged by Henri Busser. This features lyrics in Latin, and can be sung by two or four voices also accompanied by Violin or Cello ad libitum. This lyrical piece is quite slow (tempo 66) and the Organ score does not feature any pedals: the difficulty could meet the skills of upper intermediate level players. Five verses can be distinguished in the whole piece and its polytonal aspects make it sound really rich and harmonious. Gabriel Faure (1845-1924) was a French composer, organist, pianist and teacher. He was one of the greatest composers among his peers and strongly influenced all the following generations of composers. In Paradisum sets a prayer from the Roman Catholic Burial Service, often used as a movement in settings of the Requiem Mass. The opening emerges from silence and builds in texture until all eight parts are present. There follows a gentle two-part melody accompanied by humming lower parts ('In paradisum'), followed by a majestic, largely homophonic section ('Chorus angelorum'), and a closing section with echoes the opening. The gentle dissonances but approachable part-writing make for an enjoyable four-minute work for intermediate choirs comfortable singing in eight parts. / Choeur SATB A Cappella
