Press (BT.AMP-034-030).
During his
short lifetime Max Reger
(1873-1916) was a
prolific composer with
many of his best known
works being composed for
organ. The ten chorale
preludes in this
selection are from his
set of Thirty Short
Chorale Preludes Op.135a
composed as short
voluntaries for
liturgical use rather
than for recitals in
these arrangements Philip
Sparke has kept this in
mind and each prelude can
be performed with minimal
instrumentation for those
occasions where a small
band is needed. They also
make great pieces for
band warm-ups or studies
in intonation, sound and
balance.
Tijdens
zijn korte leven was Max
Reger (1873-1916) een
productief componist;
veel van zijn beste
werken zijn geschreven
voor orgel. De tien
koraalpreludes in deze
selectie zijn afkomstig
uit zijn set van dertig
kleine koraalpreludes,
opus 135a, die werden
gecomponeerd als
tussenspelen voor
liturgisch gebruik, en
niet zozeer voor
recitals. Philip Sparke
heeft hier rekening mee
gehouden zodat elke
prelude kan worden
uitgevoerd met een
minimale instrumentatie
bij gelegenheden die een
klein ensemble vereisen.
De preludes zijn ook heel
geschikt als warming-ups
of oefeningen in
intonatie, sound en
klankbalans.
Max
Reger komponierte
während seines recht
kurzen Lebens eine
Fülle an Werken vieler
Genres. Diese zehn
Präludien stammen aus
30 kleine Vorspiele zu
den gebräuchlichsten
Chorälen für Orgel.
Sie waren ursprünglich
eher als Voluntaries im
liturgischen Rahmen, denn
als Vortragsstücke
gedacht. In seinem
Arrangement für Brass
Band berücksichtigte
Philip Sparke diesen
Verwendungszweck und
machte sie für eine
minimale Besetzung
spielbar. Die
Präludien eignen sich
auch hervorragend als
Aufwärmstücke oder
als Stimm-, Klang- oder
Balanceübungen und sie
können in
verschiedenen
Zusammenstellungen als
kleine Suiten
aufgeführt
werden.

Despi
te looking more
difficult, this is a
great piece for a level 2
group. The eighth notes
are in repeated patterns
against the melody in the
bass clef at first. There
is some mild synocopation
and plenty of big chords
all rung together. A
middle reflective section
may be played on
handchimes. Then the bass
clef melody returns
against the upper eighth
notes. LV, martellato,
shakes, and RT give the
ringers plenty of
variety.

This
charming piece is a
perfect choice for a
first festival experience
and will help any group
sound more mature.
Written by Émil
Waldteufel and arranged
by Bob Phillips, the
melody moves around to
all sections in this
setting. Written in first
position in the keys of G
and D, it is a great
piece to work on lo and
hi 2s in the upper
strings as well as
stopped bows in the
entire string section.
All rhythms are very
easy, using mostly
quarters and paired
eighths. (2:40).

Incur
sion was a collaboration
between composer Sean
O'Loughlin and the
students of the
commissioning group. When
asked for a dark and
scary sounding piece,
O'Loughlin delivered in
his typical fashion.
Aggressive rhythmic
figures set the tone of
the piece early with a
foreboding and dark
melody in the lower
voices. The piece
develops through a number
of contrasting sections,
providing plenty of
exciting variations for
students to
enjoy. Incursion is a
dramatic, powerful work
for the developing
ensemble. The piece
begins with an aggressive
rhythmic idea that sets
the tone for the
composition. The lower
voices enter with a
foreboding and dark
melody that carries on
this feeling. The upper
voices then split into
counterpoint with the
lower voices at m. 17.
The counterpoint splits
into three parts at m.
25, which culminates in a
return to the opening
rhythmic figure at m. 33.
A contrasting slow
section features some
lush and haunting
passages. Measure 54
brings the opening
rhythmic figure back
again, but this time
includes a quietly
intense approach. A
recapitulation of the
counterpoint and
subsequent development
follows. Measure 83
brings back the opening
rhythmic idea one more
time to conclude with a
rousing finish.

Take
your audience on a
forbidden tour of a
former grand house that
now sits in darkness.
Anxious articulations,
daunting dynamics, and
spine-chilling sound
effects will have
everyone on the edge of
their seats. Only six
notes, but be careful...
no one really knows what
evil lurks behind the
boarded-up windows and
creaky staircases!
