Par VAN NUETEN GUY. Light the fire, James. We'll take our digestive by the crackling of the hearth. Such were the thoughts that came to mind as I started listening to Guy Van Nueten's new record. Because, yes, there is a certain aristocracy to this music. There's the feeling of autumn and you immediately long to warm yourself on the sounds that issue from Van Nueten's bony fingers. But it could just as well be a car ride through soft rain at nightfall, where trees become freakish phantoms, and here and there a villa looms like a light beacon. Pacman is a record that makes you hunt for images, films you have seen before, feelings you have known and wish to relive, like a somewhat forbidden fruit, asecret pleasure. Melancholy? Absolutely. A vague sadness to make a person purr like a contented cat? Certainly. Yet at the same time, Van Nueten is cunning. While ensuring that his music pleases you, at the end of some compositions he'll suddenly come up with a theme that he'll stop abruptly, so that the notes remain hanging like snapshots of aerial acrobats in action. It is also investigative music as if Guy himself does not wish to know just where he will finish up. There is a stubbornness to it, an elegant fight perhaps between composer and pianist. It pursues you - exactly like a Pacman, in fact, chomping away at digital pieces of your heart. Yet it never seems to dissolve into thin air: time and again, right from the first listen, he makes you long to hear more. It is music that should protect a person like a secret, like an illegal fire in a forest that warms your hands and fills your head with dreams. It smells like cedar, this piano music. Or like a nice cigar offered to you by the imaginary James, who whispers: 'The fire is crackling, sir. Just as you like it.' At which point the enchantment begins all over again./ Répertoire / Piano

François Rabbath was born into a musical family in Aleppo, Syria, in 1931. Self-taught, he discovered the Double Bass at the age of thirteen. After moving with his family to Beirut in 1946, he played in a quartet with his brothers in restaurants and hotels. At the age of twenty-two, with the encouragement of violinist Yehudi Menuhin and pianist José Iturbi, he developed an original approach to the art of Double Bass playing. In 1955 he settled in Paris and earned his living accompanying Charles Aznavour, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Serge Gainsbourg, Barbara, Yves Montand, Guy Béart, Georges Moustaki and other well-known names of the French Chanson. His first LP, in 1962, earned him the Grand Prix du Disque award by the Académie Charles Cros. He has recorded several CDs and DVDs since then, with works including Bach's six Suites for solo Cello, played on the Double Bass. He also composes and performs music for films and television, and he now appears all over the world. During one of his concerts, at the Maison de la Radio in Paris in 1972, he met Jean Leduc, who offered to publish a method explaining his new techniques for holding the Double Bass and its bow and for use of the left hand. He teaches this technique in master classes. He also invented the 'crab technique' (so called because the hand movement resembles the sideways walking of a crab), whereby the hand can move up and down the string without ever fully shifting. François Rabbath is the founder of the international Rabbath institute Paris (IRIP), where Double Bass players from many countries come to study his new technique. He also loves graphic art,, and since giving an exhibition in Paris in 2010, he is also known for his drawings. / Contrebasse

For Children's Choir and Piano . Par PART ARVO. ‘I went to nursery school every day until the end of secondary school!’ Arvo Pärt says and pauses, staring slyly at his listener. ‘My mother worked at a nursery school in Rakvere, and I always went to visit her after my lessons.’ There, the future composer often sat at the piano and played or improvised for his little friends. Arvo Pärt is a composer best known for his 'tintinnabuli' compositions. It is a lesser-known fact that in his earlier years as a composer, he also wrote children's songs and piano pieces along with music for plays and animated films.
This volume, 'Songs from Childhood', contains a selection of Arvo Pärt's music for children from the period 1956-1970. In those years he was involved with several children's studios and theatres as the piano accompanist and composer. Most of his music for children came about by way of improvisation in rehearsals and was only later completed and put on paper. These pieces therefore retain all the spontaneity and playful spirit in which they were created.
'Songs from Childhood' includes a CD of the same name, providing recordings of the songs with new and colourful instrumental accompaniments in the roiginal Estonian language for your enjoyment. These new accompaniments, which are also included as backing tracks on the CD, were arranged by the composer Tauno Aints in collaboration with Arvo Pärt.
The sheet music of these arrangements is available on hire. The piano version doubles as a piano reduction.
• 15 selected pieces for children‘s choir and piano written with all the spontaneity and playful spirit typical of Arvo Pärt‘s music for children
• Includes a CD with full and sing-along versions of the songs
• The recordings of the songs are in Estonian with new and colourful instrumental accompaniments by Tauno Aints in collaboration with Arvo Pärt/ Répertoire / Choeur d'Enfants et Piano

Piano Reduction Of The Well-Known Late 1845 Version. Par MENDELSSOHN-BARTHOLDY FELIX. (replaces BA 9050-90) Mendelssohn'
s Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première- the 'child prodigy'
Joseph Joachim- and Hubert Léonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known.
As proof sheets for the Violin Concerto in E minor were long considered lost, it could be described as somewhat of a sensation when proofs for the solo violin part resurfaced together with a letter from Mendelssohn to Léonard.
The letter informs us that the composer invited Léonard to his home in Frankfurt in order to make his acquaintance. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David- now we know that he also gave some to Léonard.
The recently discovered proofs reveal how Léonard played the concerto with Mendelssohn on that memorable evening in February 1845. Besides containing bowing marks and fingering, they also show how Léonard executed shifts of position and where he employed open strings. Furthermore modifications made to dynamic markings and additional legato bowing are shown.
It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn'
s approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter'
s correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard'
s playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany.
This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice.
The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice.

Par MAHLER GUSTAV. The Song of the Earth , composed in the summer of 1908, is Mahler’s best-known and most personal work. Reflecting drastic changes in his life, its immense emotional density is very moving. Until the very end, Mahler continued to refine the extremely differentiated instrumentation, as is evident in numerous retouchings in the autograph score and engraver’s model. It is therefore all the more regrettable that he was neither able to perform his “Symphony in Songs” himself nor that he was involved in its printing. Unfortunately, in the posthumously published first edition of 1912 and the subsequent editions edited by Erwin Ratz and Karl Heinz Füssl, many questions remained unanswered, while other were answered in a dubious way. The edition is the first text-critical one of the work on a scientifically sound basis. It offers not only a more reliable musical text, but also systematically and lucidly prepared information on the sources, their transmission and evaluation. All editorial decisions have been documented in a transparently comprehensible manner – in particular those leading to new audible results. Work-related notes on performance practice, which for the first time include Mahler’s conducting indications, offer valuable, indispensable interpretive aids. In addition to the regular five clarinet parts, the set of parts includes two additional parts (3rd clarinet/E b clarinet, bass clarinet/3rd clarinet in places where the latter plays E b clarinet) to allow performances with only four clarinets. The completely revised piano reduction reproduces the orchestral texture true to the score without losing sight of playability. Both Mahler’s piano autograph and the piano reduction by Wöss, which was commissioned by the composer himself, served as an inspiration for this. / Date parution : 2022-07-23/ Répertoire / Soli [AT] et Orchestre

Concerto In E Minor Op.64
(1844) - Violon and Piano Violon et Piano Barenreiter
Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix Konzert für Violine und Orchester e-Moll op. 64 e...(+)
Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Felix Konzert für Violine und Orchester e-Moll op. 64 erste Fassung 1844 Edition no.BA 9099-92 ISMN 9790006565733 Editor Todd, R. Larry / Brown, Clive Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto op. 64, is a key work of the 19th century, adhering to the classical style of Beethoven while pointing the way to the romantic ethos of Brahms. It has long been known that Mendelssohn performed the work with three soloists in succession: Ferdinand David, who worked closely with the composer during its composition and played it at the première; the 'child prodigy' Joseph Joachim; and Hubert Léonard, a young Belgian virtuoso about whom little is known. It was already known that Mendelssohn had given proof sheets to David; now we know that he also gave some to Léonard. It is safe to assume that all of this was done with Mendelssohn's approval. That the young violinist made a positive impression on the composer is confirmed in the latter's correspondence following their joint performance. Mendelssohn is full of praise for Léonard's playing and offers to lend his support in finding employment in Germany. This revised edition of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto (only the orchestral parts remain unchanged) includes a separate booklet on performance practice. The editor, Clive Brown, is an acknowledged expert on Romantic performance practice. - New source situation owing to recently rediscovered proofs - Revised Urtext edition - With a separate booklet on performance practice (Eng/Ger)

Grand Nordic Tune. Par OLSEN VADSTEN OYSTEIN. 'Storslått' or in English ?Grand Nordic Tune? is one of many original pieces written by composer Øystein Olsen Vadsten. 'Slått' is a general term for music played to traditional Norwegian dances. ?Grand Nordic Tune? was a commissioned work for the Rælingen Musikklag's 70-year anniversary concert in 2022, where the piece was premiered. They wanted something a little pompous, and preferably something in the style of Nordic folk music, which the composer is known for. The title in Norwegian then was obvious, 'Storslått', which in Norwegian has a double meaning, both a big tune and, in a double meaning, pompous or magnificent. As usual, the starting point is a traditional Nordic dance form, and this time the choice fell on the distinctive Swedish 'polska', which is played in ¾. The dance, despite its name, reportedly has no connection to Poland, but is entirely of Scandinavian origin. It has been danced for centuries, and has also been called the devil's dance, because it had a hypnotizing effect on people, so that they could not stop, but danced themselves to death. Hence people thought that it must have been the devil who caused it. Traditionally, there is a lot of repetition in this type of music, which contributes to this hypnotic effect. / Date parution : 2023-07-31/ Répertoire / Concert Band/Harmonie
