Solar Visions (2004) for woodwind quintet was commissioned by and is dedicated to theArcadian Winds of Boston, Massachusetts, at the specific request of John Paul Aubrey,hornist. Hearing the Arcadian Winds perform contemporary music on numerous occasionswas an inspiration to the writing of this piece.The work is in three movements, each sharing the same basic musical material. The startingpoint for the work's conception is a dissonant cadential figuration from early American music,centered on Ab. Spinning out from this idea, the material extends to incorporate patterns ofperfect 5ths one semitone apart. This sense of cadence is extended in the work to makelarger-scale structures.The first movement, Recitatives and Chorales, consists of free, recitative-like material for theinstruments in solos. These recitatives often erupt into fast spirals. This texture is interruptedperiodically by chorale-like ideas presented by the full quintet.The second movement, Serenata, is a song-like with each instrument taking the melody inturn. Some of the recitative-ideas of the first movement re-emerge, as well as a rearticulationof the cadential figuration.The third movement, Dance, is energetic and driving. The dance is interrupted by arecollection of the first movement's material. The final resolution of the extended cadentialfigurations occurs at the end, and the work ends exuberantly with a flourish in Ab major.

Cascades is a three-movement composition for flute choir that represents both the waterfall definition of the word and the mountain range in the Pacific Northwest. The first movement represents Multnomah Falls, the tallest waterfall in Oregon. It drops 635 feet in two tiers. The music has cascading musical figures as well as sense of power and beauty. Mt. Hood is the inspiration for second movement. Standing at 11,249 feet above sea level, this majestic mountain is dramatically visible from the valley floor and is snow covered most of the year. The music of this movement depicts the rising from the valley floor with its low to high orchestration. The almost symmetrical shape is represented by descending lines after the two climaxes.The third movement is a reminder of the relatively youngness of the Cascade mountain range. In 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted, causing catastrophic damage to the surrounding area and loss of lives. What remains of this former symmetrical mountain is a large crater as a reminder of the volatile nature of the Cascade Range. The music of this movement is filled with tension, from the seismic tremors of the first part to the eruption itself in the second part. A final cascade, this time depicting lava flow rather than a waterfall, brings both the movement and the composition to a close.

This leads directly into a lyrical aria sung first by the flute over a guitaraccompaniment -- then briefly by the guitar. Suddenly, a joyous harvest-dance erupts. Thisends rather abruptly and a rhapsodic coda emerges, but a bit of the harvest-dance returns for aenergetic finish.This is a score for two performers. Two copies should be printed.

Hölderlin’s late lyrics offer a certain riveness between equation, lunatic bursts and a dissociated smoothness. This ‘riveness’ can be found in the work’s concentrated character, which combines fragile colours of piano and flute, an eruptive climax and exactly organized lines and motives. During the thorough revision of the score, 17 years after the composition of the primary version, I tried to preserve the character of the piece with its strong influences from Alban Berg’s expressionistic style, but to accentuate the musical ideas of the work more exactly and subtly at the same time.
