Orfeo ed Euridice (French: Orphée et Eurydice; English: Orpheus and Eurydice) is an opera composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck, based on the myth of Orpheus and set to a libretto by Ranieri de' Calzabigi. It belongs to the genre of the azione teatrale, meaning an opera on a mythological subject with choruses and dancing. The piece was first performed at the Burgtheater in Vienna on 5 October 1762, in the presence of Empress Maria Theresa. Orfeo ed Euridice is the first of Gluck's reform operas, in which he attempted to replace the abstruse plots and overly complex music of opera seria with a noble simplicity in both the music and the drama. The opera is the most popular of Gluck's works, and was one of the most influential on subsequent German operas. Variations on its plot-the underground rescue-mission in which the hero must control, or conceal, his emotions-can be found in Mozart's The Magic Flute, Beethoven's Fidelio, and Wagner's Das Rheingold. Though originally set to an Italian libretto, Orfeo ed Euridice owes much to the genre of French opera, particularly in its use of accompanied recitative and a general absence of vocal virtuosity. Indeed, twelve years after the 1762 premiere, Gluck re-adapted the opera to suit the tastes of a Parisian audience at the Académie Royale de Musique with a libretto by Pierre-Louis Moline. This reworking was given the title Orphée et Eurydice, and several alterations were made in vocal casting and orchestration to suit French tastes.

This massive hit by Roy Orbison and Bill Dees has been carefully arranged for standard Wind Quintet (Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn in F and Bassoon) plus optional percussion.  With school and amateur ensembles in mind, this arrangement is designed for intermediate players and above.  Percussion (Drum Kit or  Cajon) can be added for additional colour if desired, but is not essential for a convincing performance.  The music is faithful in spirit to the original, with everyone having their moments in the spotlight as themes are shared by the players across the ensemble.  The PDF is 22 pages in length (portrait A4) and includes a score and parts plus optional percussion, with additional parts for Horn in Eb and Bass Clarinet to allow substitution of the Horn and Bassoon for non standard ensembles if required. The duration of the piece is about 2.20 minutes.  Look out for other instrumental versions by the same publisher for Saxophone, Clarinet and Brass Quintets.

A copy of the Privilége du Roy. granted by King Louis on March 22nd 1724 was printed in full on the second page.Each sonata has 4 or 5 movements in the same key alternating slow and fast and is written for players of equal ability. Obvious mistakes and omissions have been corrected without comment, trills have been added where there is for e.g. a sequence where only the first trill has been indicated or a similar passage has a trill in that part or another part. The more modern tr has been substituted for + and the mordant used on shorter notes retained. No dynamics were included in the original and none have been added. Players should feel free to add their own. For the arrangement some changes of register have been made to accommodate the ranges of the oboe and clarinet and additional slurs have been added (dashed lines). Players are free to retain the ‘feel’ of early eighteenth century style whilst playing modern instruments. The original publication used the, now defunct, soprano clef (with G on the bottom line of the stave) and this edition has been transcribed into the modern treble clef. In the eighteenth century it was quite usual for wind players to play several instruments. The use of the soprano clef would have made it easier to switch between flute and bassoon.

Ella quedó cautivada por él.2) Mariposa del invierno: El dragón se hace humano y se le declara a la princesa. Le dice que la ama. Ella le contesta que lo ama, pero que su mano está prometida, y que su matrimonio traerÃa estabilidad polÃtica al reino. No podÃa corresponder al amor del dragón, pero aún asà estuvieron juntos un rato.3) Vals Bizarre: Tras haber sufrido el frÃo beso de la mariposa del invierno, el dragón habÃa agonizado y visto su muerte. Se logró salvar y recuperarse gracias a su amor por ella. No obstante, ella ya no estaba. El vals Bizarre suena en sus encuentros y desencuentros.4) Tango del diablo: Las tensiones entre ambos son cada vez mayores. Ella ya no puede estar con él, el tiempo la sofoca. Entonces, el dragón y la princesa bailan el apasionado tango del diablo, persiguiéndose con miedo a encontrarse.5) Himno de despedida angelical: El dragón se queda en la montaña, y de repente los ángeles lo encuentran. Empieza entonces una batalla frenética con los ángeles volando por todos lados, tratando de atacar a un dragón que recibÃa y repartÃa mucho daño. Todos los ángeles murieron tras cantar su himno. El dragón quedó herido de gravedad.6) Marcha fúnebre: La princesa se iba en tren a otra ciudad a casarse. HabÃan pasado meses desde que dejó de ver al dragón. La última vez que vio algo fue meses atrás. Tuvo miedo por él. Por su parte, el dragón no tenÃa fuerzas y estaba muy herido. Se acurrucó y se preparó para dormir. Entrando al sueño, comienza a viajar, a proyectarse y encontrar a su amada princesa. Ella, cabeceando, sintió en su cabeza la voz de su amado dragón. Le contó que estaba herido, y que encontraba que la vida no tenÃa sentido. Que los dragones revivÃan cada cierto tiempo, y que sin ella nada serÃa lo mismo. Ella le cantó a su vez que lo amaba, y que tenÃa que salvarse. Pero el dragón fue claro. It is part of a secular collection, found on a manuscript that was used in Henry's court. The originality of the song has been questioned, with various parts of the song allegedly taken from similar pieces in Europe. The song itself is a courtship conversation in Middle French between a man and woman.
