Flight of the Bumblebee Flight of the Bumblebee is, to be sure, an orchestral interlude composed by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov for his opera The Tale of Tsar Saltan. Of course, Korsakov intended to portray a bumblebee's chaotic flying pattern musically. Nowadays, this piece is one of the comparatively more famous classical works because it frequently appears occasionally in popular culture. The piece appears notably in the opera at the close of Act III, Tableau 1. This is when the magic Swan-Bird changes the Prince (the son of the Tsar) into a bee so he can fly away to visit his father. Interestingly, at this point in the drama, his father, in effect, does not know that he is alive. Korsakov Background Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844 –1908) was a uniquely famous composer from Russia. He was likewise a member of an infamous assembly of composers called The Five. Korsakov was furthermore an expert in orchestration. His correspondingly most famous orchestral compositions- Capriccio Espagnol, the Russian Easter Festival Overture, and the Scheherazade suite- are essential monuments of the standard music repertoire. Also comparatively very important are his suites and excerpts from his 15 operas. Korsakov used Russian folklore and fairy tales, such as Scheherazade, in his music. Nationalistic Style Like fellow outspoken composer Balakirev, Korsakov believed in creating a nationalistic, Russia-centric style of classical music. The new style was called Orientalism. It similarly relied on native Russian materials, exotic scales, and experimental harmonic, melodic, and rhythmic procedures. This practice, conversely, ran counter to the developments in Western musical culture. Musical Developments Nevertheless, Korsakov developed an appreciation of Western musical techniques after he became a professor of musical composition, harmony, and orchestration at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory in 1871. Moreover, he undertook a rigorous three-year program of self-education. He mastered Western methods, incorporating them with the influences of Mikhail Glinka and other members of The Five. His techniques of composition and orchestration were additionally enriched by his exposure to the works of Richard Wagner. Naval Service Korsakov combined his music career accordingly with a career in the Russian military. He was in the first place an officer in the Russian Navy. In due time, he was appointed a civilian Inspector of Naval Bands. As a result, Korsakov expanded his knowledge of woodwind and brass playing, which heightened his orchestration capabilities. Legacy In due time, Korsakov contributed a significant number of Russian nationalist works. He also prepared, occasionally, compositions by The Five for presentation. This brought their works straightaway into the active classical repertoire as well. He also shaped an entire generation of younger composers as a music educator. Therefore, music historians consider Korsakov the foremost engineer of what the public considers the Russian composition style. He served as a transitional figure between The Five and the classically trained composers who became the norm over time. In addition to the Russians, he influenced non-Russian composers such as Ravel, Debussy, Dukas, and Respighi. Â

High Desert Apparitions is inspired by the beautiful and mystical lands and traditions of the Native American people of Northern Arizona. It consists of three movements. Shape Shifters (Skinwalkers or yee naaldlooshii) are evil creatures that appear as humans or as animals. This movement has the piano representing the human form and the saxophone representing coyotes, owls, foxes, and crows in that order. The human shape musically appears at the beginning and in between the animals. Multiphonics are used for some of the animal sounds. Mirages is at a soft dynamic throughout with a lot of sustained sounds. The saxophone sustained sounds begin and end without vibrato with slight vibrato or timbre trills used in the middle of the sustained sound. The intent is to musically represent a vision of water that appears to be evaporating. All mirages are fleeting and the rapid passages in both the saxophone and piano musically represent impermanence. Ancient Spirits is in two sections. The slower opening is atmospheric, evoking images of Native American flutes calling to the ancient spirits. The second section is chant-like and is influenced by recordings of Navajo Yeibichai songs. A Yeibichai is a supernatural represented by a masked dancer in an initiation or curative ceremony. The piano chords are dissonant and steady imitating the sound of drums. While the music is repetitive, there are subtle changes to the melodic material as well as the accompanying chords.

Elements and is designed to musically portray the essential nature of the Classical Greek elements, fire, water, air and earth and their astrological implications. The first movement is Fire whose essential nature is strong and controlling. The music contains a lot of forceful sections, primarily in a homophonic style. The water element’s chief characteristic is sensitivity, therefore it is in a slow tempo and is lyrical and harmonically rich. The chief characteristic of the air element it is changeable, therefore this movement is filled with contrasts of texture, dynamics, articulation, meter, tonality, and orchestration. This last movement represents the Earth element whose main characteristic is stability. To represent stability musically, a lot of ostinatos were used. This work was commissioned by the h2 quartet in order to perform with a high school orchestra. Several substitute parts are provided. The score prints on legal size paper and the parts on letter.

Published by Judith Cloud (A0.981222). What Would Nina Simone Say? For Soprano Sax and Organ (9'50)Program NotesI became interested in Nina Simone in the spring of 2018. She was born Eunice Waymon in Tryon, North Carolina, my own hometown. I knew little about her while I was growing up. Later I heard she was an activist and the sentiment around town I observed was that there was far from a feeling of pride about who Nina Simone was. If that really was the case (and I have no proof of it) there was a dramatic change with the creation of The Nina Simone Project in 2006. I was still ignorant of this, having lived in Arizona for most of my adult life. But researching Simone led me to an immense feeling of pride for my hometown when I read about the support she had from the white community in the 1940’s. Without that encouragement and financial support, as well as artistic support from a local piano teacher, Muriel Mazzanovich, Mrs. Mazzy, as she was called and who Nina treasured and respected all of her life, Nina Simone would never have reached the world with her unique prodigious musical talent. She was a diva by all counts and her original compositions reflect a balance of words with music that is far superior to what her contemporaries were creating. A bronze sculpture of her by Zenos Frudakis now stands on Main Street in Tryon. How can you be an artist and not reflect the times? Simone asked in an interview. That to me is the definition of an artist. The feminist writer Germaine Greer declared Every generation has to discover Nina Simone. She is evidence that female genius is real. What would Nina Simone say today? I think she’d be mad as hell and screaming about revolution, probably still advocating for the use of violence. I’ve used some of Simone’s energetic and compelling motives in this composition. It is my own tribute to her genius and to how she gave to the world so much even though she was plagued with agonizing physical and mental ailments. That suffering seems to me an undercurrent in each video I have watched of her concerts. What I would give to have been in her presence for one of those concerts! She embodied music as an art form, revering her musical teachers, Bach, especially. That she never achieved her main goal of becoming the first female African-American classical pianist of world stature is perhaps not so sad when you think of how many more people she moved with her talent expressed in jazz and folk popular idioms. But she was prone to violence and many people, even those closest to her, were often fearful of her rage. She was misunderstood for so many years and it was only in the last two decades of her life that her moods were somewhat controlled through use of prescription drugs. The musical life that began for Eunice Waymon when she was seven years old playing the piano and organ for services at St. Luke’s C.M.E. Church (where her mother was the preacher) in Tryon, N.C. traversed many cities in many countries. She died at the age of 70 in 2003 in Carry-le-Rouet, France.

La Paloma is a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was composed and written by the Spanish composer from the Basque region Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) after he visited Cuba in 1861. Iradier may have composed La Paloma around 1863, just two years before he died in Spain in obscurity, never to learn how popular his song would become. La Paloma belongs to a genre of songs called Habaneras, a musical style developed in 19th-century Spain that is still today very much present in the form of folk songs and formal compositions, particularly in the Northern Basque Region and East Coast (Catalonia and Valencia) regions of the country. Like all Habaneras, its characteristic and distinct rhythm reflects the fusion of the local Cuban songs that the Spanish sailors of the time brought back with them from their travels to the island, with the rhythm structure of the flamenco tanguillo gaditano (original from Cádiz, Andalusia). Very quickly La Paloma became popular outside of Spain, particularly in Mexico, and soon spread around the world. In many places, including Afghanistan, Hawaii, the Philippines, Germany, Romania, Zanzibar, and Goa it gained the status of a quasi-folk song. Over the years the popularity of La Paloma has surged and receded periodically, but never subsided. It may be considered one of the first universal popular hits and has appealed to artists of diverse musical backgrounds.[1] There are more than one thousand versions of this song, and that together with Yesterday by the Beatles, is one of the most recorded songs in the history of music. This music has been conceived also with the electron structure in mind. Electrons are made of 3 quarks each and in this piece the 3 quarks are the 3 notes of the musical cell. Germination composition technique is also used to create the form starting from the cell itself. Moreover the archetype of 'alteration' or 'evolution' can be found in the modification of several parameters, as well as in the style and form. 'In the spiral' is the meaning of that latin title. In-spira is also a pun on the italian verb 'Inspira' that means 'to inhale', but conjugated in the second person singular imperative.
