The Piano Concerto No. 2 in C minor, Op. 18, is a concerto for piano and orchestra composed by Sergei Rachmaninov between June 1900 and April 1901. Reinhold Gliere's Concerto for Coloratura Soprano and Orchestra, Op. 82 was written in 1942-1943 and shows off the composer's gentle melodic musical style reminiscent of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and even Wagner. The choice of a vocal soloist singing without words was not new at that time, as Rachmaninov's beautiful Vocalise had already been composed. But....adding a full orchestra to the mix was a gamble that paid off, as this is one of Gliere's finest works. The Concerto consists of two movements -- Andante and Allegro and is about 14 minutes in length. The 1st movement's rich melodies are full of lush harmonic textures and the work drives from climax to climax. The finale Allegro is lighthearted and bounces along merrily to the end. Gordon Cherry's arrangement for Alto Trombone with Piano accompaniment reduction brings a major new work to the Alto Trombone repertoire. This work can also be performed on the Tenor Trombone, however, the style of the work makes it perfect for the Alto Trombone. Appropriate for advanced performers. (Under license from G. Sérénade is an early work of Rachmaninoff, from a grouping of five short solo Piano pieces titled Morceau de Fantasie written in 1892 and dedicated to his harmony teacher Anton Arensky. One of his most famous works, the Prélude in C-sharp minor is from this same Opus 3. Opus 3, No. 5 in B-flat minor is the final work of the set and is in a gentle Waltz style, sometimes venturing into the Dorian mode.Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well for the Trombone with this fine arrangement by Ralph Sauer.For advanced performers, this movement is about 5 minutes in length.

It's slow tempo allows the mood of the work to reach a giant climax. Rachmaninoff's lush harmonies and gorgeous melody work very well with this transcription by Ralph Sauer. For moderately advanced performers this movement is about 4 3/4 minutes in length.

Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.810899). The Prokofiev Five Songs Without Words, Opus 35 were written in December 1920 during a tour of the USA. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire.The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. Mr. Sauer has scored these songs beautifully for the Trombone and Piano.
