Published by James Haynor (A0.1450502). One of the few early works of Holst to survive his scrupulous self-criticism is an unassuming setting of the Ave Maria for eight-part female chorus. Completed in 1900, shortly after he abruptly left the Royal College of Music, the composition is dedicated to the memory of his mother, Clara Lediard Holst, who died when he was a child.Scored here for Trombone Octet, “ Ave Maria “ is a lovely setting for a haunting rendition of a familiar theme. Joshua F’it de Battle of Jericho is a well-known African-American spiritual, most likely composed by slaves in the early 19th century. Early versions used the word f’it for fought. The words harken to the biblical story of the Battle of Jericho, where Joshua led the Israelites to victory against Canaanite armies. Put into perspective, Joshua’s battle is really against slavery and the desire for freedom, like the themes of so many other spirituals from that era. This rousing arrangement in swing-style for 8-part Trombone ensemble by James Markey is about two minutes in length, featuring the 1st and 8th parts and is for advanced performers. This selection is one of the many arrangements from The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Away in a Manger is one of the most popular Christmas carols and there are a number of musical settings of it. The most popular musical setting of it in the United States is the tune commonly known as Mueller. It was composed by James R. Murray and was first published under the name Luther's Cradle Hymn, in his collection Dainty Songs for Little Lads and Lasses, in 1887. It was intended for use in kindergarten, school and home.In this selection, Regis Bookshar has arranged three verses of this popular Christmas carol for a Trombone Quintet. The first verse is a traditional setting of the tune while the second verse has a more complex accompaniment. The third verse also includes a descant. Between the second and third verses, he has included a short interlude. In addition to this arrangement for a Trombone Quintet, there are also other Quintet arrangements of Away in a Manger for a variety of instrumental ensembles, as well as quite a few other Christmas selections, readily available for purchase.
