Versatile Brass Old Time CollectionThe song was written about a year after the Royal Air Force and German aircraft had been fighting over southern England, including the white cliffs of Dover, in the Battle of Britain. Nazi Germany had conquered much of Europe and in 1941 was still bombing Britain. With neither America nor the Soviet Union having yet joined the war, Britain was the only major power fighting the Axis powers in Europe (see The Darkest Hour). The American lyricist, Nat Burton, wrote his lyric unaware that the bluebird is not indigenous to Britain and asked Kent to set it to music. Notable phrases include Thumbs Up! which was an RAF and RCAF term for permission to go, and flying in those angry skies where the air war was taking place.The lyrics also looked towards a time when the war would be over and peace would rule over the iconic white cliffs, Britain's symbolic border with the European mainland.The song was made most famous by Vera Lynn and sung to troops during the war. It was a top ten hit in America for Kate Smith in 1942, and Glenn Miller recorded a version in November 1941.Jimmie Baker frequently performed it in Europe during the war, and the song was sung by the vocal group The King's Men on a 3 February 1942 episode of the Fibber McGee and Molly Show. Ray Eberle and Tex Beneke also included it in their repertoire.This is a simple arrangement of the song playable by all levels of ensemble.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808706).     Orville and Wilbur Wright made their famous flight in late 1903; this song was published seven years later: Fred Fisher’s music with Alfred Bryan’s lyrics. The words form a narrative of a young man attempting to get his girlfriend to go up with him in his flying machine. And, that would take much more daring on her part than one might realize today. The year 1910 was still early days for aviation; most airplanes were still made of wood, wire and fabric and looked liked giant gliders. Supposedly, the Josephine of the song was Josephine Sarah Magner, reputed to be America’s first female parachutist. Magner married Leslie Burt Haddock, whose aviation career started in balloons, and made her first jump in 1905. During the next dozen years, she made more than 500 jumps. Pretty daring!    This arrangement is quirky and an absolute delight to play (and to listen to)! The first half is set in the song’s native ¾ time. The takeoff is the introduction, followed by the chorus, then the verse and again the chorus as the melody loops, rolls and spins through the five instruments. A middle section briefly quotes two other aerialist tunes-He flies through the air with the greatest of ease and Up in the air Junior Birdmen-and serves as a transition to cut time. A swing version of the chorus brings us in for a landing and final fade.    The arrangement begins in the key of C major and changes to G major during the transitional section. Suggested tempo is 76 bpm throughout. The arrangement comprises 202 measures: Horn in F plays the most notes, followed by Trombone and Tuba, while Trumpets get off relatively lightly. All notes are well within the normal playing range of the instruments; Trumpet 1 does, however, play A above its staff several times.    Completed in 2021, performance time for Come, Josephine in My Flying Machine runs about 3 minutes, 45 seconds. Tuba I should be played on an Eb or F horn. This arrangement is on an advanced intermediate level. The melody is split between the two euphoniums and tuba 1 gets to play a written out jazz chorus. This piece is inspired by the following stanza from Paradise Lost: Whence and what art thou, execrable shape, That dar'st, though grim and terrible, advance Thy miscreated front athwart my way To yonder gates? Through them I mean to pass, That be assured, without leave asked of thee. Retire; or taste thy folly, and learn by proof, Hell-born, not to contend with spirits of Heaven. Here we see Lucifer, even after he has fallen so far, his wings bound by adamantine chains, still view himself with pride for being filled with the light of Heaven. He challenges Death, thinking himself superior to the foul (and more powerful) being. The arrangement still has the duet aspect in each section with the first and second parts which could be another way of featuring certain sections of the ensemble. With the addition of low brass instruments brings more depth with a subtle Bach choral vibe. Along with the standard beginning band orchestration, the arrangement has a piano and bass guitar part. This is a great piece to start focusing on tone and intonation for beginning instrumentalists. Definitely a great addition for proper band warm-ups and concert program piece.

The varying time signatures in the first half of the piece didn’t seem to cause any issues in her arriving at the alter safely and we are still happily married after 30 years!It can, of course, be used in any setting and if my suggested tempo seems a little on the quick side I’ll blame that on the length of the church nave. Pick a tempo which suits your situation and try to capture a majestic feel.

Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808680).     First published in Flowers for Children, Volume 2 in 1844, Lydia Maria Child’s poem, The New-England Boy's Song about Thanksgiving Day, describes a sleigh trip to Grandfather’s house to commemorate the national day of thanks and the anticipation of the tasty food that will be consumed in celebration thereof. Why were they in a sleigh in a New England late November? Because the Little Ice Age was still extant in the early 19th Century and there was snow on the ground! Later, maybe in the 1870s, the poem was set to a tune, the composer of which is unknown. As years passed, the words were changed to Grandmother’s house, the song was adapted to a Christmas carol and the title changed to the first line of the poem, Over the River and Through the Woods.

Ten years later, when this Howard and Emerson tune was published, those cylinders were referred to as records, and Arthur Collins made the first recording of Hello! Ma Baby. The lyrics tell the tale of a guy who has a girlfriend he knows only through the telephone. This was one of the first songs to deal with the telephone (that medium, too, being still pretty new). The chorus was kicked back into the spotlight in 1955 when a certain movie frog sang and danced his way across a Warner Brothers cartoon background. The current version used the 1899 sheet music as its source, but is a completely original arrangement that enhances the ragtime feel of the music. This is an infectious piece that is fun to play and a toe-tapper for the audience. Completed in 2016, this arrangement’s performance time runs about 3 minutes, 20 seconds. The SS Canadiana was a passenger ferry that primarily operated between Buffalo, New York and the Crystal Beach Amusement Park at Crystal Beach, Ontario, Canada from 1910 to 1956.The Canadiana featured stately, Victorian architecture, salons done in rich mahogany, beveled mirrors, brass railings and lighting fixtures, grand stairways with sweeping banisters and stately newels, stained and leaded glass windows and gilded plaster Neptune's heads between each, accenting the walls. Ceilings were done with three-dimensional plaster formations of grape vines and rose clusters enhancing ovals of mahogany molding that, in turn, framed hand painted scenes and still-life's. To say she was elegant is an understatement. Composer Irving Tallis (dates unknown) was commissioned to compose a march to commemorate the launching of this Grande Dame of the Great Lakes. This rousing march incorporates two distinctly nationalistic tunes into its fabric - Yankee Doodle for the USA and Maple Leaf Forever for Canada. It should be played jauntily but not too fast. Range in the 1st trumpet to high D.

This is a super cool version of Star Trek's Voyager! This arrangement has 10 parts. The 10th part can be played easily by a Tuba or Bass Trombone.
The 1st part starts with the first three notes being very high...although those three notes can be dropped down the octave and it will still sound great.
Parts 1 - 5 have Bass Clef and Tenor Clef versions.
As written... the ranges of the parts are as follows.
1st - D natural an octave above the staff down to B natural on the second line of the staff.
2nd - B natural an octave above the staff down to the B natural on the second line of the staff.
3rd - A natural an octave above the staff down to the B natural on the second line of the staff.
4th - B natural an octave above the staff down to the B natural on the second line of the staff.
5th - G natural an octave above the staff down to the D natural on the middle line of the staff.
6th - E natural an octave above the staff down to the G natural on the bottom line of the staff.
