A Child’s Garden of Jazz for Brass Quintet
Brass Quintet: 2 trumpets, horn, trombone, tuba
Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792338 Composed by Wolking, Hen…

Brass Ensemble - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.792338 Composed by Wolking, Henryenry. 20th Century,Contemporary,Jazz,Ragtime. Score and parts. 56 pages. Gordon Cherry #4804655. Published by Gordon Cherry (A0.792338). As an adult I occasionally try to remember and or capture child-like experiences-maybe not so much the actual event, but the emotive atmosphere left from impressions long ago embedded in the psyche. Each movement of this work is based on spontaneous and uncalculated musical imagery of dreams and childhood reflections. I have deliberately avoided the professional composer’s bag of developmental tricks and worked for a more free flow of simple melodic ideas: they go wherever they want.Movement IInspired by the feelings I had growing up on Merritt Island Florida with my older sister Barbara. This music was a gift to her on the occasion of her 2004 marriage in Flemington New Jersey. It was originally scored for a brass quartet with which I performed. I have written three other brass quintets, and when I started thinking about this one (my fourth) this seemed like a logical choice for a first movement.Movement IIBased on a tune that came to me in a dream. It is dedicated to my wife Lois (we also married in 2004) and has a formal title of Wake Up To A Melody. I originally scored it for jazz band-more specifically for the excellent Salt Lake Alternative Jazz Orchestra, and it has recently been recorded by that group. I like the simplicity of this melody, and felt it would make a natural second movement for this brass quintet.Movement IIIThe third and most difficult movement is Tangoragrondo. It is literally a rondo with a turn-of-the century (19th-20th) ragtime melody/gallop occupying the A theme followed by a Tango (inspired by trips to Santiago Chile) for the B theme. The return to the rag (A theme) is then followed by a fantasy development (C area) with a return to to the rag (A theme) followed by a coda that recalls material from the first movement. The form is quite simple- ABACA-Coda.The material was originally developed as a movement for my double concerto Letting Midnight Out On Bail written for the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo and orchestra. It was recorded by the Warsaw Philharmonic and has been released on CD. A second version for two pianos has also been recorded and released by the Duehlmeier-Gritton piano duo. This orchestration for brass quintet will be the final resting place for this chaotic rondo.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1377086 By Vangelis. By Vangelis. Arranged by Nicholas Hare (Arranger) & Peet du Toit (Orchestrator). Film/TV. 11 pages. Peet du Toit #961705. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1377086). Chariots of Fire is a 1981 British historical sports drama film directed by Hugh Hudson, written by Colin Welland and produced by David Puttnam. It is based on the true story of two British athletes in the 1924 Olympics: Eric Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian who runs for the glory of God, and Harold Abrahams, an English Jew who runs to overcome prejudice. Ben Cross and Ian Charleson star as Abrahams and Liddell, alongside Nigel Havers, Ian Holm, John Gielgud, Lindsay Anderson, Cheryl Campbell, Alice Krige, Brad Davis and Dennis Christopher in supporting roles. Kenneth Branagh makes his debut in a minor role.Chariots of Fire was nominated for seven Academy Awards and won four, including Best Picture, Best Original Screenplay and Best Original Score for Vangelis' electronic theme tune. At the 35th British Academy Film Awards, the film was nominated in 11 categories and won in three, including Best Film. It is ranked 19th in the British Film Institute's list of Top 100 British films. The film's title was inspired by the line Bring me my Chariot of fire! from the William Blake poem adapted into the British hymn and unofficial English anthem Jerusalem; the hymn is heard at the end of the film.[4] The original phrase chariot(s) of fire is from 2 Kings 2:11 and 6:17 in the Bible.Nicholas Hare's cunning arrangement of the composition inspired me to orchestrate it for a brass quintet, where mostly the tuba plays percussive effects to indicate the tension of the race. Enjoy!

Score and parts. 32 pages. Regis Bookshar #6537739. Published by Regis Bookshar (A0.813843). Largo (from Symphony No. 9 in E minor) (From the New World) (Db) (Brass Ensemble) - Intermediate - Digital Download. This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (24 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour. In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners. The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, he has created this version for a Brass Ensemble. Parts included with the purchase are a 1st Trumpet in Bb, a 2nd Trumpet in Bb, a 3rd Trumpet in Bb, 1a st French Horn in F, a.

Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, in addition to this version for a Brass Quintet, consisting of 2 Trumpets, 1 French Horn, 1 Trombone and 1 Tuba, he has made quite a few other arrangements of this selectio.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1459452 Composed by Randy Brooks. Arranged by Will Corbin. Christmas,Country,Pop. 10 pages. Will Corbin #1038405. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1459452). Randy Brooks says he was inspired to write this song by a tipsy relative. Important useless but interesting related fact: Brooks is the nephew of Foster Brooks, who made the rounds of '60s TV sitcoms, talkies and variety shows playing a stumbling drunk. Brooks' band talked him out of recording it himself, so he turned it over to Elmo Shropshire (I'm not making this up), who recorded it in 1979. (This is what most people would refer to as a very bad career move on Brooks' part, since he has not otherwise been heard of since.)This version, instrumental only, spares you the silly story ... but everybody reconizes the tune.If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to accommodate. Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1460761 By Billie Holiday. By Arthur Herzog Jr. and Billie Holiday. Arranged by Will Corbin. Blues,Jazz,Pop. 20 pages. Will Corbin #1039660. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1460761). Billie Holiday first recorded this song in 1941 (and a couple more times after that, in different settings). As the story goes, it was inspired when Holiday's mother refused her a loan with the words, God bless the child that's got his own. She and frequent collaborator Arthur Herzog Jr. then put the song together in 20. Or so the story goes. Whatever the case, this classic anthem, covered by just about every singer born since then, is in the Grammy Hall of Fame. It also helped win a Grammy for Album of the Year for Blood, Sweat & Tears in 1968. They also performed it at Woodstock. This arrangement, for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba (featuring the trombonist in the role of lead BS&T singer David Clayton-Thomas), is based on their treatment of Holiday's soulful tune.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1460740). This 1964 Beach Boys recoding is supposedly inspired by a Utah teenager's unauthorized extracirricular use of her dad's Ford Thunderbird; she was supposed to be studying, but instead she drove to a local teen hangout to ... hang out. She was promptly grounded and lost her driving privileges. This arrangement is short and relatively easy to perform. It puts the tuba in the spotlight in one pass through the verse. If you'd like other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461634). This song, published in 1955 during the warmest part of the Cold War, is a true Soviet anthem and also, after it escaped the Iron Curtain, a modern jazz standard. When composer Vasily Solovyov-Sedoi and his poet-lyrcist partner, Mikhail Matusovsky put the song together, they titled it Leningrad Nights (which today would be the very unpoetic St. Petersburg Nights. For some reason the Soviet Ministry of Culture asked them to rename it, roughly, Evenings In The Moscow Suburbs. Thankfully, the official name didn't stick. The song provided break music for a Soviet music and news station and also for Radio Moscow. I heard it performed by a small band on the steps of the Katerina Palace, the Summer Palace, outside St. Petersburg and was inspired to give it a shot when I got home. This accessible arrangement, which features a Dixieland break, is for two trumpets, horn, trombone and tuba. If you need other instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1461631 Composed by Ernesto Lecuona and Marian Banks. Arranged by Will Corbin. Classical,Jazz,Latin. 22 pages. Will Corbin #1040375. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1461631). Cuban-born (he fled to the U.S. when Castro took over) Ernesto Lecuona wrote the Suite Andalucia in 1933; Malaguena, the best known and most performed part of it, is the sixth movement. It has been covered by everyone from orchestras to big bands to drum-and-bugle corps to (!) Connie Francis. This arrangement is inspired by and adapted in part from Bill Holman's spectacular 1961 arrangement for the Stan Kenton big band. The song was on Kenton's Adventures In Jazz album, which won a Grammy in 1962.I've made it considerably less adventuresome -- like taming the trumpet ranges -- so it's more accessible to mere mortals. If you need different instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Or for young rakes with veneral disease and an addiction to alcohol. Whatever the case, it has been through many iterations, many names and many supposed composers. Louis Armstrong's 1928 recording put it permanently on the U.S. blues/jazz map. This rendition is inspired in part by a treatment by Troy Andrews, otherwise, and mostly, known as Trombone Shorty. If you need alternative instrumentation, please contact me at wilcor@aol.com.

Brass Quintet Horn,Trombone,Trumpet,Tuba - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1465638 By Neil Diamond. By Neil Diamond. Arranged by Will Corbin. Pop. 20 pages. Will Corbin #1044251. Published by Will Corbin (A0.1465638). Neil Diamond is said to have dashed off this song in half an hour in a motel room in Memphis in 1969. It was inspired, he later said, by the then-young daughter of John F. Kennedy. Still later, he said it was actually his wife, Marcia, who provided the muse, but he needed a three-syllable name to fit the music. Whatever. It's an awful song, but audiences love it, in part because it comes with ritual participatory yells and gestures born of many sports stadiums, notably Fenway Park, where it's played in every 8th inning. That's my excuse. If you need alternative instrumentation, I'm happy to help. Contact me at wilcor@aol.com.
