Published by Pete Strohm Music (A0.928135). Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is one of Brahms' most popular works, expertly arranged here for Brass Quintet by American composer P. F. Strohm. Brahms wrote this piece (Op. 56) in the summer of 1873, first for two pianos then as an orchestral work. It is well-known for its unique five-measure phrasing of the chorale, which is used throughout the piece. Brahms kept this basic structure while developing the material in each variation, creating ten related-but-separate musical gems. This works out well for brass players, as individual variations range from just under a minute to just over three minutes for the finale. The piece is a joy to perform. The variations can be combined at will to fit performer skills for recitals, concerts and contests. Played in its entirety, Variations on a Theme of Josef Haydn is a striking concert showpiece with a typical performance time of 17:50. This third edition of the arrangement has uses a new font, clarifies some accidentals, and improves the part layouts. Difficulty level for the piece varies between Medium and Medium-Advanced. C. P. E. Bach was an innovator as an early Classical music composer, helping to develop the sonata form that was refined by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. Like his father, Carl Phillip Emanuel was prolific and showed signs of true genius.
Symphony No. 1, in three movements (fast-slow-fast) was originally in D and has been transposed down a step to C by the arranger Justin Bland.
This very fine arrangement of the entire work of about 12 minutes in length is appropriate for very advanced performers and could be the cornerstone of a recital program.

Penderecki?s cadenzas for Haydn?s celebrated trumpet concerto are written in this tradition, but the creative will of the modern composer makes them far wider in scope. Penderecki?s stylistic methods leave the soloist every opportunity to display their virtuoso skills. The original notes of Haydn?s concerto movements remain present as an underlying framework. This piece could be subtitled Homage to Haydn, as I found myself using many aspects of his musical language: clear phrasing and form, unexpected turns, ideas that develop into new ideas, sections of fugue, etc. I call it a finale because it has the same energy as most of his symphonies' final movements. It is suitable for advanced intermediate and professional quintets. It would work well anywhere in a recital, but especially at the end. Duration: 4 minutes, 39 seconds. .
