The Liberty Bell March for Brass Quintet by John Philip Sousa Arranged by Jari Villanueva Score 2 Trumpets in Bb Horn in F (Eb Alto Horn) Trombone (Baritone TC) Tuba Drums (optional) Substitute parts provided It may be associated with Monty Python's Flying Circus but "The Liberty Bell" was written for Sousa's unfinished operetta The Devil's Deputy in 1893. Financing for the show fell through and shortly afterwards, Sousa and his band manager George Hinton attended the Columbian Exposition in Chicago. As they watched the spectacle "America", in which a backdrop depicting the Liberty Bell was lowered, Hinton suggested "The Liberty Bell" as the title of Sousa's recently completed march. Coincidentally, Sousa received a letter from his wife, saying their son had marched in a parade in honor of the Liberty Bell which had been on a nation-wide tour. Sousa agreed. He sold "The Liberty Bell" to the John Church Company for publication, and it was an immediate success. The origin of the tune comes from the time Sousa heard Marcella Lindh, one of his soprano soloists, whistling a tune of her own creation. Sousa couldn?t get the melody out of his head and asked his soprano if he might use it in a march. She agreed, but didn?t know that her tune had been used until several years later when she happened to hear a European band perform the march.

He played the game and even wrote article about America’s Pastime. Sousa wrote the march THE NATIONAL GAME at the behest of Kenesaw Mountain Landis, the Commissioner of Baseball. For music and sports scholars and aficionados the years 1900-1920 are considered the golden age of the John Philip Sousa Band and baseball in America. The 1908 World Series is considered the greatest and most controversial baseball series of the twentieth century and the Sousa Band’s World Tour of 1910-1911 is undoubtedly one of the most unique music public relations efforts by a single individual to introduce the early twentieth-century world to American music, culture and baseball. Sousa composed The Fairest of the Fair intending his Band to perform it at the annual Boston Food Fair in the fall of 1908. It is the only work of any kind that he composed that year and one of only a handful of compositions that he wrote between 1906 and 1910. He apparently completed it in New York during the summer, as the final page of the original score was signed John Philip Sousa, Camp Comfort, Saranac Lake, Adirondack, New York, July 8, 1908.The march almost missed its premier at the Boston Food Fair. Because of an oversight the music, which Sousa had written and scored out, did not have individual parts written out for the performers. This was discovered the day before the performance. The new composition had received much advanced publicity and it would have been an embarrassment to Sousa not to have it performed. The band’s copyist, Louis Morris, rose to the occasion and on the train to Boston stayed up and copied out the parts so the band could premier the work as advertised on September 28, 1908. In the morning when Sousa found out Morris was working all night he instructed him to finish the work and get some rest. Dedicated to Secretary of State John Milton Hay, The Diplomat was apparently composed over one of the best tenderloin steaks Sousa ever had. It is one of a few Sousa marches where, with the right emphasis, a different character jumps off the page. It is also highly nuanced, for example the added hits in the repeat of the Final Strain. Special interest may be directed to the tuba part, which is incredibly active throughout. This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Diplomat was composed in 1904, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2018. The piece is catalogued as Volume 4, No. 63.

Recycled from Sousa’s operetta of the same name, this is one of Sousa’s longest marches. Personally, the euphonium part is one of the most difficult and demanding excerpts I’ve seen on auditions. Though I’ve followed the Marine Band edition section titles I disagree with their designations. I see mm. 22-33 as an Interlude, not a Strain, while mm. 52-68, though it adds a flat, is less a Trio melody and more an additional Strain. A rare revisit to Sousa’s medley march days, this march features Stephen Foster’s Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming and Ethelbert Nevin’s Narcissus. This unpublished march could have been called “Homage to Nevin and Fosterâ€, “Homage to Pittsburghâ€, or “The Belle of Pittsburghâ€.It is one of Sousa’s more unusual works, but highly inventive. His combination of themes is well executed and builds throughout to a triumphant conclusion.
