My Bonny Lad is an old Northumbrian folk song first seen in a publication in 1922. The first verse of the lyrics are:
Have you seen ought of my bonny lad?
Are you sure he's well-o?
He's gone o'er lang wi' a stick in his hand,

Composer, John Frith has taken this beautiful melody and expertly crafted a "Theme and 8 Variations" of it for Tuba and Piano about 6 minutes in length and appropriate for advanced performers.

The aria Una voce m'ha colpito (A Voice Struck Me) is a bass/baritone solo that was arranged for solo Tuba a hundred years later by British bandmaster, composer and cornetist, Colonel James Ord Hume. The Tuba solo went out of print quite a while ago but has been rediscovered and edited for solo Bass Tuba and Piano by Warren Ryland. This solo is featured as part of our Vintage Brass Series.

He was also a very talented painter in the style of Goya. The Two Dances, 1. Oriental and 2. Fandango are taken from the 12 danzas españolas, volume I from 1890, for Piano.Mr. Sauer has brilliantly taken the solo Piano part and divided it between solo Tuba and Piano. Tubists will enjoy working on this style of Spanish Nationalist music of which there is none in the solo repertoire. The Two Dances are about 6 1/2 minutes in length and can be performed by advanced musicians.

Tailleferre was the only female composer of the famous French Les Six. 1. Berceuse, originally for Violin and Piano lilts and floats in a calm and lyrical stream of dreamy phrases. 2. Pastorale originally for solo Piano is a playful movement in mixed meter alternating between legato and articulated phrases. Together they are total about 5 minutes in length and are appropriate for advanced performers.

It is one of the very early impressionist pieces of music. Debussy seems to wander through modes and keys and achieves evocative scenes throughout. The musical format of songs without words is not unusual, as Mendelssohn composed a number of very beautiful ones for the Piano and of course Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise is one of the most famous works in the musical repertoire.The Five Songs Without Words were premiered in New York City in 1921 by the soprano Nina Koshetz. In 1925, while living in Paris the composer arranged the five brief songs for Violin and Piano. Their haunting, bittersweet and lyrical style is typical of Prokofiev and the advanced performer will find these wonderful miniatures totaling 12 minutes in length a perfect vehicle for a major work on a recital. The writing is very expressive and dark, possibly evoking the mood of Europe in the throes of great upheavals and the Great War. About 12 minutes in length, these four movements are appropriate for advanced performers.
