Toccata & Fugue for Organ (2018)Composed by Aris AntoniadesRunning time: approx. 7' 50'' Writing for Organ always seemed like a very distant dream for me. Born and raised in Cyprus, an isolated Mediterranean island-state in Europe where the religious musical tradition (Greek Orthodox Christianity) relies solely on voices (no instruments used during services), I never had access to an Organ. In fact, to the best of my knowledge, there’s not a single Organ in my entire country. The first time I ever saw one was during my college years in New York – and it was love at first sight! I was fascinated by its sound capabilities, its mechanism, and the sheer skill required to play it. You can, therefore, understand how thrilled I am to have had the opportunity to write for this great instrument. I would like to sincerely thank Shannon Murphy and Austin Philemon for believing in my work, and for commissioning this piece. Both the Toccata and the Fugue are based on the same (but altered) motivic materials. The Toccata is a piece that was inspired by the idea that life is a continuous marathon, represented by the ‘mechanical’ sixteenth-note ostinato figure which never stops – despite the contrapuntal obstacles that are thrown within its path. The motive, however, does transform and adapt along the way, in order to make the best of the situation. The Fugue, on the other hand, represents the cerebral aspect of life: the concept of choices. The ostinato motive of the Toccata has now morphed into the subject of the Fugue, which will be attacked by some violent chromatic enemies. Lili of St. Luke'sbyFran OlsenIn 1990, a small black and white spotted dog, who had been found wandering, abused and sick in Surry County, Virginia, was scheduled to be put down by the Surry SPCA as unadoptable. Â Three placements had failed because the young female was too afraid of the people. Â Her last chance was Richard Lee Austin, curator of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia. Â Austin had reluctantly agreed to look at the small spoodle. Â He had just lost a beloved Pekingese of 18 years and did not want to go through the pain of another loss. Â Lili, however, immediately seemed to know that this was her person, came directly to him and won his heart. Â It was a mutual love affair.Lili went eagerly to work with Dick at the Gift Shop of Historic St. Luke's Church in Smithfield, Virginia, for the next 11 years. Â She was gracious and never intrusive with the visitors. Â Small children were able to approach Lili without fear. Â She seemed to understand that she needed to be quite still with them.In 2000, Lili became the star of her own book, Lili of St. Luke's: Â The Blessing of the Animals. Â Written by Fran Olsen, a volunteer at the church, and illustrated by Buttons Boggs, the charming book tells the story of Lili's desire to go to church. Â The animals in the church yard scoff at her. Â She finally succeeds in going to church for the annual Blessing of the Animals service which commemorates the Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi. Â Since the book was published many children have come to the church to have their picture taken with Lili.Mrs. Olsen, who is also the publisher, has donated a dollar from the sale of each book to be shared with Historic St. Luke's Church and three area humane societies with which Lili has been associated. Â Contributions in the first six months of publication were $1200.Lili died on June 7, 2001, from cancer. Â A week before she died, she made a personal appearance at a local elementary school. Â As always, she was gracious and gentle, even though later it was apparent that she was deathly ill. Â A bronze statute is planned to honor the gentle spoodle and will be placed at the church so children can continue to have their picture taken with her. Â This elegy was commissioned for performance at the annual Blessing service.

The opening movement is composed in a sonata form and consists of three sections: exposition, development and recapitulation.The exposition begins with a stately introduction that consists of pointed rhythms. After the opening theme has been stated, there are two sections that employ canonic imitation of motives at measures 9 to 12 and 21 to 32. The closing theme depicts a bugle passage that is imitative in nature. The development section usually states thematic materials from the exposition section, but it is not always the case in some compositions. Take, for example, the middle section (measures 42 to 83) that contrasts the opening theme in its lyricism; its melody is written in the stepwise manner and is imitated in the pedal part. The recapitulation is a section where the restatement of the main theme and other sections, including the extended version of the bugle theme, recur after concluding the middle section of the sonata form. The piece ends triumphantly in a FFF passage.The work is educational in that it teaches students the sections that make up a sonata form. This piece is suitable for recital use.

These eight Chorale Preludes were all written between March and May of 2020, during the worldwide Coronavirus Pandemic. Unlike the earlier companion volumes of shorter English and German preludes, which feature a variety of moods and themes, these American examples all seem to center around the closely related ideas of hope and quiet confidence. While this was not my intention back when I was choosing hymns to work with, I am pleased with the unity of the set. Taken as a whole, they are filled with tidings of comfort and joy. Stylistically, the preludes range from the baroque bounce of Praise Him, Jesus Our Blessed Redeemer, through the sturdy On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand (with its chords sounding as if they had been carved from granite blocks) and a surprisingly delicate I Stand Amazed. There is a fair amount of canonic leading and following in He Leadeth Me; Great is Thy Faithfulness is the expressive heart of the set; and we end by returning to 18th century ritornello models with Blessed Assurance. Through it all I think I have managed to avoid any sense of academic stuffiness - in fact there are several moments which may sound almost playful if not handled rightly.As with the Shorter English and German Preludes, most of these are between one and two minutes in length, and each fits on one or two pages, arranged so as to avoid page turns. As always, durations and sources are provided for your planning.

For many years I have enjoyed playing the simpler manualiter chorale preludes of Zachau and J. G. Walter in the old Peters edition many organists will be familiar with. Then there are the delightful little preludes of Ernst Pepping which I first heard as a teenager in a recording by E. Power Biggs. I had something of a cross between these two influences in mind for this new set of English preludes. There are some finger-twisting moments here and there, but by and large these manuals-only pieces are meant to be shorter, more direct, and simpler (in concept, if not execution!) than my larger sets of preludes. The hymns dealt with here represent a useful mix of liturgical purposes and include Holy, Holy, Holy!, Come, Thou Almighty King, When Morning Gilds the Skies, Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates, All Things Bright and Beautiful, Beneath the Cross of Jesus, The Church’s One Foundation, and Christ the Lord is Risen Today. As always, sources and timings are included and the score prints in landscape format.

The selection of postludes during the Lenten season is always a challenging one, particularly when searching for hymn-based works. This compilation of ten arrangements by ten arrangers seeks to alleviate this challenge for the organist. This collection of extant works is eclectic in its selection of hymn tunes, textures, and general styles, while retaining the plaintive and reflective elements of Lent. This 3.75 minute arrangement first states the first line of the hymn a few times then continues so when the line reaches the end of the phrase and holds, the material giving the rest to what the ear hears as the resting spots of the melodic statement finds the melody restated to provide the ear its resting, resulting in a constant infusion thus, a litany. Using the voix celeste, this is a very well received writing. It happens the day after I finished this my mother passed. I have used this as prelude and offertory. Good for students needing help with learning legato. A favorite of my congregation, I always am thanked by someone each time it is presented for having played it. Good instruction for providing easy pedal part that slowly spans from Eb1 to F3 then back to Eb1 by step progression. Tune name: Slane.

Premiere Performance was at a presentation on Caribbean music, used as an example of typical Caribbean exuberance, structure and form, and Caribbean rhythms, including polyrhythms. Marked as Advanced Intermediate simply because some people have trouble with the rhythms; but otherwise, Early Intermediate. 4 page organ solo. (Apologies for the bad recording equipment; it was recorded on a million dollar pipe organ but I realize it doesn't sound like it.)

This Galop and Waltz in Oom-pah style is in AABA form. The A theme is a Vivace 2/4 Galop, then a slower 4/4 bridge to repeat the Galop. Then the B theme is a brisk 3/4 Waltz, right back to the 2/4 Galop. This catchy tune is a rousing crowd pleaser for any concert or recital. Works well with either Classical Organ or Theatre Organ. Perfect for Oktoberfest ! Intermediate because of the always Vivace/brisk tempo and the need for controlled playing of the articulation which always varies from staccato to normal to marcato to slurred. The only use of Pedals is during the 5 bar bridge, the rest is manualiter (hands only). 2 page score 2 minutes.
