Despite this piece being playable with only open strings and first finger, the backing track makes it sound much more complex and advanced! The following are assumed to be learnt in advance: Violin 1 / Viola 1 / Cello 1 / Double Bass: Crotchets (quarter notes), minims (half notes) and dotted minims (dotted half notes), crotchet rests (quarter rests). Open strings and first finger one tone higher on G, D and A strings.Violin A / Viola A (A for advanced): the above plus second and third fingers making the tone-tone-semitone shape from the open string.Violoncello A: the above plus all four fingers in first shape. The use of second finger is clearly marked. As many or a few parts as required can perform the piece, though the 1 parts have the true melody if used alone. Admittedly the Double Bass part musically interferes with the bass part of the backing track but is added for inclusion purposes. Performed here by Alec Keith (flute), Matt Weiss (violin) and the Octava Chamber Orchestra under guest conductor Ian AlvarezWesterly is inspired by the old English folk song Westron Wynde and by the Renaissance masses based on that folk songIt is an expanded version of Celebration originally written for James Pellerite and his North American Native flute [NAF]In order to make the piece accessible to a wider range of performers this version uses a concert flute, with wider range and with just a few of the NAF decorations, and the violin solo part has also been expanded, resulting in a miniature Double Concerto. Westerly uses four distinct themes and weaves them into a joyful whole. The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme).The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in. This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount. So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together. In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.

This magnificent Christmas piece, composed in 1847 by Adolphe-Charles Adam (with text by Placide Cappeau), has been arranged for string orchestra and piano. The form of this piece remains fairly homogeneous for almost the entire piece, with an ostinato of piano triplets and strings that harmonize the melody, and then explode in the final double refrain with several moments of counterpoint and the piano that intersects the triplets with repeated chords and melodic flashes on the medium-high timbres. When the melody is restated it is doubled in Violin 1 and Violin 2 joins the accompaniment. The equally sonorous second theme is played by Violin 2. Each instrument has a substantial part to play in this excellent adaption of the Beethoven sonata. The arrangement remains in the original key of Ab Major.This arrangement is dedicated to Dr. Michael Rickman, Professor Emeritus at Stetson University in DeLand, Florida. This miniature for bassoon and string orchestra was written as part of a multi-composer suite for the Delian Society based on the poetry of Paul Verlaine. It was premiered by Franck Leblois and the Octava Chamber Orchestra (the audio sample is the performance in question several years ago). The string parts are originally an arrangement of my choral setting of Gavin Ewart's poem Alcohol and the bassoon part completes it and makes it more French. The Verlaine quote comes from his Bonne Chanson collection in which he rejects the green fairy (absinthe) - arrière l'oubli qu'on cherche en des breuvages execrés - get thee behind me the forgetfulness we look for in these accursed drinks.

Westerly is inspired by the old English folk song Westron Wynde and by the Renaissance masses based on that folk song It is an expanded version of Celebration originally written for James Pellerite and his North American Native flute [NAF] In order to make the piece accessible to a wider range of performers this version uses a concert flute, with wider range and with just a few of the NAF decorations, and the violin solo part has also been expanded, resulting in a miniature Double Concerto. Â Westerly uses four distinct themes and weaves them into a joyful whole. Â The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme). The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in. Â This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount. Â So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together. Â In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.
