An ideal hymn selection for Easter Sunday, Eastertide, or at any celebration of the eucharist, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing is one of many hymns translated from Latin by Robert Campbell (1814-1868), a Scottish advocate (lawyer) and Roman Catholic layperson. First published in 1850, At the Lamb's High Feast We Sing was one of four of Campbell's hymn texts to be included in Hymns Ancient & Modern (1861), the first standardized and popular hymnal of the Anglican Church.The tune accompanying the text, known as SALZBURG, is attributed to the German composer Jakob Hintze (1622-1702). Its harmonization has long been attributed to J.S. Bach and numbered among his works as BWV 262. This is the catchy calypso song from the spectacular dance scene in Central Park from the 2007 Disney flick Enchanted. If you've never seen it, at least check out that part of it (I think it's on YouTube). It's just fun, and it's a great song. It was nominated (along with two other songs also from Enchanted) for the Oscar for best original song. They all lost to an awful song you've never heard from a movie you've never seen. I think maybe the Academy has developed an allergy to Disney. A medley march, using sea chanteys Knock a Man Down, Away for Rio, Haul the Bowline, The Ballad of Billy Taylor, It’s Time for Us to Leave Her, Put up Clearing Gear, Hoodah Day, and A-Roving. Easily one of Sousa’s most enjoyable.  This Brass Quintet arrangement was made using “The President’s Own†United States Marine Band’s The Complete Marches of John Philip Sousa score as found at https://www.marineband.marines.mil/Audio-Resources/The-Complete-Marches-of-John-Philip-Sousa/. The Chantyman’s March was composed in 1918, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 83.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. Because of this, Euphonium/Baritone would make a suitable substitute.

The Boar's Head CarolThis Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. It is also said to be the very 1st Christmas carol to ever be publish in English because it dates back that early.Although the modern versions of the song makes no mention of Christmas, the original verses does so in The boar's head we bring with song, in worship of Him that thus sprung, of a Virgin to redress all wrong; NoelThis Intermediate Level arrangement starts out in Bb Major and modulates to C Major for the final chorus. That's Amore did the job, becoming Martin's signature song. It first showed up in the 1953 Martin/Lewis comedy The Caddy, for which it received an Oscar nomination for best oriiginal song. (It lost to Doris Day''s Secret Love from Calamity Jane.It has been covered countless times, by artists from Annette Funicello to the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra.This version leans on the trumpets for melody, with the others providing the oom-pah-pah and other support. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1404796). James Wells, Moderator of the United Free Church of Scotland, tells the story of a little girl carrying a big baby boy in his 1884 book The Parables of Jesus. Seeing her struggling, someone asked if she wasn't tired. With surprise she replied: No, he's not heavy; he's my brother.He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother is a ballad written by Bobby Scott and Bob Russell. Originally recorded by Kelly Gordon in 1969, the song became a worldwide hit for the Hollies later that year and also a hit for Neil Diamond in 1970. It has been recorded by many artists in subsequent years. The Hollies' version was re-released in 1988 and again was a major hit in the UK.Scott and Russell were introduced to each other by Johnny Mercer, at a California nightclub. Although Russell was dying of lymphoma and the pair met only three times, they managed to collaborate on the song.Not sure how many brass quintet versions of this music is available, but here's my representation of it. U.S. Field Artillery was composed in 1917, and the referenced edition was made Public Domain in 2019. The piece is catalogued as Volume 5, No. 78.Section titles (such as “First Strain†and “Trioâ€) follow the measure numbers provided by that edition. Each instrument follows its full-band part as often as possible, the only exception being Trombone covering the Euphonium/Baritone part. The Oboe Concerto in D minor, S D935, is an early 18th-century concerto for oboe, strings and continuo attributed to the Venetian composer Alessandro Marcello. The earliest extant manuscript containing Johann Sebastian Bach's solo keyboard arrangement of the concerto, BWV 974, dates from around 1715.Bach's keyboard version was published as an arrangement of a concerto by Antonio Vivaldi in the 19th century. In 1923 the C minor version of the oboe concerto was published as a composition by Benedetto Marcello, Alessandro's brother. In the second half of the 20th century several publications indicated Alessandro again as the composer of the piece, as it had been in its early 18th-century print, and the oboe concerto was again published in its D minor version.This easy arrangement for brass quintet (Bb Trumpet 1, Bb Trumpet 2, F Horn, Trombone, Tuba) of the marvelous second movement (adagio) of the concerto is suitable for any occasion.

It was written in 1912, but owing to revisions was not published until 1921. It is named after the St Paul's Girl`s School in the United Kingdom, where Holst was Director of Music from 1905 to 1934. It was written in gratitude to the school, which had built a soundproof studio for him. This suite is the most famous of the many pieces he wrote for students at St. Paul`s. Well…this was originally written specifically for one of our education shows (Sailing the High Seas), but we decided it’s worth putting out into the world because it’s shorter and substantially less taxing than the standard editions. This particular arrangement has been reduced to under 2 minutes, making it perfect for education shows when you want some Dixieland, but you don’t have all day. There’s enough written-in-improv lines (inspired by the Louis Armstrong recordings) to make it feel right, but without requiring actual improvisation. And, as always, there’s ample rest for the higher brass players. This piece is so painless to play that it could be put at the end of any recital, no matter how tiring, and everyone can get through this last piece while taking the audience out with some Dixieland fun.We also have a trio version of this piece!Duration: just under 2 minutes

Dragon’s Breath, Op. 139 for brass quintet began as a short brass quintet fanfare as a gift to celebrate Giddings Mouthpieces 20th anniversary of making stainless steel mouthpieces, on which I played for much of my Air Force career. Ivan, the owner of Giddings Mouthpieces, was pleased with the gesture, but with the feedback that the low brass needed to have more fun. With that feedback and some encouraging words from Esteban Batallán, the principal trumpeter of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), I went to work on this fiery piece.The evocative title Dragon’s Breath comes from a heat treatment that Ivan Giddings uses on some of his mouthpieces. It is a title fitting of a fiery piece! Especially in light of my family moving to Japan during the compositional process, the title is also autobiographical with dragons being a prevalent theme throughout many Asian countries.Although trumpet parts in both B-flat and C are provided, the trumpet parts lay much more comfortably on C trumpets than on B-flat. The technical requirements of all five parts present delightful challenges and weave a complex furor throughout the piece, even when underlying the lyrical, albeit turbulent, melodies. Story line and imagery are left to the hearer’s imagination based on everything the title may invoke.
