Psalm 1 by Heinrich Schütz (1585-1672), is taken from his collection of choral settings of several of the biblical Psalms of David, in which Schütz continued the polychoral tradition he had absorbed in Venice as a student of Giovanni Gabrieli. Schütz indicated in his preface to the Psalms, published in 1619, that due to limits on performance during the Thirty Years War, alternate instruments or voices could be employed as available. As Psalm 1 was composed for two choirs of voices, it might be an attractive option to double the parts in this version for brass. Also, the choirs might be placed some distance apart. The original version of Psalm I is for two four-part choirs, one of mixed voices and one of tenors and basses. (The original also calls for continuo accompaniment, but, as in similar works of Gabrieli, the choral parts sound complete in themselves.) Composer/arranger David Fetter (b. 1938) is a Trombone faculty member at the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Also a conductor, his works are performed in concert, at festivals, and in educational settings in the U.S. and Europe and they have been recorded by leading soloists. Mr. Fetter is a former member of the Cleveland Orchestra, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Radio/Telefis Symphony Orchestra of Ireland, the U.S. Army Band, and other ensembles, where he performed for conductors who included George Szell, Leonard Bernstein, Seiji Ozawa, James Levine, Sergiu Comissiona, and David Zinman. At the Eastman School of Music he was a trombone student of Emory Remington and a member of the Eastman Wind Ensemble under Frederick Fennell. Lisa Albrecht’s beautiful arrangement for Trombone quartet is based on the 1837 setting by Robert Pearsall, the one of the favored by many choirs and their organists. The melody was so popular that many composers have tried their hand at arranging it including Buxtehude, Bach, Liszt and Dello Joio. This arrangement of about 3 minutes can be performed by intermediate to advanced players. Trombone I is in tenor clef and the rest of the parts are in bass clef and can be performed by intermediate level players.

It features the 1st and 3rd trombone parts. Use it to feature one player or perform it with a whole choir. The highest note is Ab, so there isn't a lot of fatigue involved like the original key for the horn solo.

Young Bruckner composed the Missa Brevis WAB 146 for mixed a cappella choir (also known as the Kronstorfer Messe) in 1843 while working as a teaching assistant in the town of Kronstorf. The Mass, to be sung during Lent consists of four movements: 1. Kyrie - Adagio 2. Sanctus - Adagio 3. Benedictus - Andante 4. Agnus Dei - Adagio The work is reminiscent of the style of Palestrina and exists without a Gloria or Credo. Ralph Sauer has beautifully arranged this 5-minute work for 4-part Trombone ensemble. It was commissioned by the students of my colleague and friend, trombone professor, Donald Babcock. They are Daniel Larson, Manuel Smith, Jack Porath, and Kyle Wickham. These fine trombonists gave the premiere of 95@500 during the 2017 EMU Music Now Fest, February 16, 2017. When I received the request to write something for them, I took the opportunity to fulfill my wish to write a piece to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. The title refers to Martin Luther's nailing 95 theses on the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, October 31, 1517. This act began a revolution in the Christian church that had great consequences. One major change was the creation of more simple music that could be sung by the congregation instead of a trained choir. Hence, the Lutheran chorale was born. It is not known exactly when Martin Luther wrote Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, but it is thought to have been written between 1527-1529. A copy exists with his signature that can be viewed on the Internet. Luther wrote the melody with no harmony, but many composers have since harmonized it. About two hundred years after Ein feste Burg was written, Bach used it in his Chorale Cantata, BWV 80, to be sung on Reformation Day. Luther had set it with irregular rhythms and that gave rise to the unique rhythms in this set of variations. However, the last variation follows the well-known regular meter.
