Contrary to most of his oeuvre, these were serious works lacking the satire, wit, and non-conformity Satie usually exhibited. Still, they are unmistakably Satie: soothing, floating, and very French. This work is a straightforward arrangement of Satie’s 4th nocturne, applying the color and dynamic ranges of the orchestra to his piano writing. Nocturne for Orchestra began as a piece that would celebrate the 400th Anniversary of Galileo’s telescope while using a musical language that would be in keeping with a program of American music. I thought that The Unanswered Question by Ives, and the emotional depth and poignancy of much of Copland’s music, would be a perfect compliment to a tribute to Galileo. But then two friends passed away and the piece turned into a tribute to them, with the night sky and the Unanswered Questions that surround us creating a consoling environment for this effort. The songlike themes of Nocturne grow out of my journey from mourning the premature deaths of my friends to celebrating their rich and vibrant lives. Section A is the dreamlike introductory section, B is a transition to the song-like section, and C is where the songlike themes are stated outright. D is a development section, E is an interruption - returning to the dreamlike music, F merges the dream music with the thematic material, G is the expressive high point of the piece and is articulated by the violin and cello solos. The remaining sections are intended to convey freedom and celebration. This is followed by a brief coda.

Napoli Suite for piano was written in 1922-25. The aesthetic attribute most praised by the French is that utterly indefinable quality known as â??charmâ??. Among its leading proponents among 20th-century composers is Francis Poulenc, whose picture-postcard piano suite Napoli whimsically evokes the seaside pleasures, the serene beauty and urban bustle of Italian life as seen through the lens of an urbane French tourist in Naples. All of the above-mentioned colorful virtues of this music moved me to orchestrate this suite for a symphony orchestra, combining it with chamber and solo episodes, where, along with a full symphony orchestra, complete freedom is given to the soloists of the orchestra and its groups. For example, the 1st part â?? Barcarolle - starts with Violin, Flute, Oboe, and Clarinet solo. The 2 part - Nocturne - is almost chamber ensemble consisting of Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Harp, Tambourine, Cello and D. Bass. The Tutti orchestra wedges in contrast only in in the last 6 bars. The 3rd part - Caprice Italien â?? string septet is soloing in 2 episodes without a conductor amidst powerful and colorful full orchestra sound. I hope to arouse interest of conductors and soloists of the orchestra to perform this brilliant music.

DoReMi Edition #653398. Published by DoReMi Edition (A0.1049004). Chinese Rhapsody No.3 was composed e in Toronto, Canada , 1988. Huang dedicated the piece to the Canadian Saxophonist Paul Brodie who premiered it in Parry sound of Ontario in the same year. Written in Saibei Folk Style, the music is divided into 5 movements without stop. As usual, Huang didn‘t use any folk song . But the typical taste of Huang’s “Zhang Jia Kou[張家å£] accent†is pretty easy to be identified. With the concert virtuosity, the 1st movement is composed as an emotional Cadenza which expresses the profound affections to the land of Saibei. Using the same Alto Sax., the lyric 2nd movement is followed by a folk dance, the 3rd movement. Chang to a Soprano Saxophone, the 4th movement is sound like a dreamy nocturne which is interrupted by the percussions of the fiery 5th movement. The whole Rhapsody ends on a climax of the Chinese Northern west “wind and percussion “styleâ€. Brodie found more than 300 trills in this piece. Perhaps this is the key to perform the music in real Chinese style. Huang has composed 5 versions of these pieces for different ensembles: saxophone solo with piano, or strings, or winds/brasses, or Chinese traditional orchestra, or symphony orchestra. There are, however, major differences: - the themes appear in chronological order (like in the opera) - there are no distinct movements, this is a 20-minute romp featuring tune after tune - most parts, especially repetitive songs, are abridged to varying degrees - where appropriate, sections seamlessly segue into the next- the major tunes (Les Toreadors, Gypsy Song, Toreador Song) allow for applause afterwards - the orchestration follows the original (double woodwinds, 4 horns, 2 trumpets, 3 trombones, harp, timpani and 3 percussion, strings) with minimal changes to compensate for missing vocal lines Further cuts are possible and easy to make due to the clearly marked sections. This arrangement is meant to rival the orchestral suites in excitement and colours - but in a more organic/continuous format. It is ideal for any level orchestra (intermediate+) in any kind of setting.
