Written in the style of nocturne, it is one of the most famous songs in Debussy's work. And also it is often featured as a repertoire among classical pianos as a whole.In this arrangement, while respecting the original song, bold “reharmonization†(change of chord) is applied. And further, an opening section as fade-in effect and an ending section extending the aftertaste time are added. All of them are used for creating new attractive of this song. And, I am also inspired by the title “A sentimental promenade which had been named at the time of publication in 1900-1901. There are many weak sounds throughout this song, but each phrase requires a rich expression centered on romanticism. At the same time, it is also important for the phrase to be passed down smoothly, and especially in the middle part, a flowing propulsion is required. I hope that those elements will be organically linked to the harmony taste, which is the key to this arrangement. Commissioned by conductor Keiko Kobayashi, and the Sony Concert Band. This work for concert band takes its title from the first section of Cato’s novel. It is intended for use by a varsity level middle school or non-varsity high school band.The music is representative of the first few steps taken along a life’s journey from innocent beginnings through first encounters with love, heartbreak, and loss, culminating with the realization that through all of its twists and turns, the river remains a constant source of perpetual renewal. Along the way, there are musical allusions meant to invoke the early days of river paddlesteamers in Australia, including a wooden box whistle and tempo markings such as Dead Slow Ahead, Finished With Engines, and Full Ahead. Nancy Fotheringham Cato AM (11 March 1917 – 3 July 2000) was an Australian writer who published more than twenty historical novels, biographies, and volumes of poetry. Frequently associated with the Jindyworobak Movement, Cato was also known for her work campaigning on environmental and conservation issues.

Instrumentation: 2222-2200-timp-stringsSteve Laven, cellist with the Boston Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra, contacted me a month ago and asked if I would be interested in writing a work to help celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the founding of the Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra. I said, Sure!!! He said it would be nice if I would consider a concerto grosso in which the principal players of the orchestra would each get a feature. I agreed that that would be a fine idea. So, on June 18th, 2017, I started working on it. And since I am on summer vacation from teaching I was able to finished the 557-measure work on July 2nd, fifteen days after I started. In 2018 just before I made plans to get the work recorded I made some revisions. One major change was that I cut the fourth movement out completely. It is now a mere 482 measures long. Over the years I have written at least ten orchestral works for Max Hobart including three symphonies and four concertos for saxophone, violin, oboe and cello, respectively. So I was thrilled when Max asked me to write a concerto for trumpet virtuoso Stephen Burns and the Boston Civic Symphony Orchestra. I am familiar with Stephen Burns’ work as a piccolo trumpet player doing concertos from the baroque period. The color of his sound was already in my head. Stephen and I got together in the spring of 2104 and we discussed the project in some detail. We immediately agreed that the work would be in three movements. Each movement would feature a different trumpet: the trumpet in C for the first, the flugelhorn for the second and the piccolo for the last. I began work on the concerto at the end of August and finished it three months later. The work as mentioned earlier is in three movements: 1. Heraldic Beast … Allegro. 2. Bossa Nova in 7/4 … Adagio. 3. Perpetuo Moto … Presto! Enjoy!!!
