With its constantly changing meter and time signatures and shifting moods, it is a portrayal of just a few minutes in the life of a 3-year-old boy, ranging from relentless, whirlwind-like energy and activity, to calm, restful passivity, then back to full liveliness again, and the eventful, extremely active life of a young teenage girl. The first movement was written while reflecting on young James Edwin. The second was written for Jessica Noelle. Both movements celebrate the happiness and joy of childhood.

Mine is an actual setting of the Stéphane Mallarmé poem of the same title. Even though the entire poem is in the voice of the 'faun,' who is a male, albeit half human-half goat, I decided that because the poem is so beautiful and seductive a soprano voice would do the words justice. Although there are always subtle differences change steadily in every section, the development of the main motives are very simple and clear in this piece, implies as if the diversities will finally purify and unite to one simple concept/idea, even they are developed in different ways. This symbolizes the little egret flies over different mountains and valleys, but always seeking the way to the only place for peace and happiness. The Egret’s Wishes was premiered in the National Cocnert Hall on 25th of August 2002. It was pragrammed in a concert of The 2nd Taiwan-Canada Summer Music Festival. The world premiere musicians were Kiai Nara (Piano), Edmond Agopian (Violin I), Meng-Ping Wu (Violin II), Jui-Se Yang (Viola) and I-Wen Lin (Cello).

The work is dedicated to organist Nancy Granert, for whom the solo part was written. The work was commissioned in celebration of the von Clemm Chamber Organ at The Memorial Church, Harvard University, built in 2006 by Klop Organ Builders.As with many of my works, relationships between old and new musical concepts are explored. In this piece, musical aspects of the Baroque organ concerto tradition (and Baroque style string playing) co-exist with more contemporary musical elements. In particular, the directness of expression found in many Baroque concertante works is present throughout. Musical material is shared between the movements in a motivic fashion.The title of the first movement, Bricolage, is defined as “something made or put together using whatever materials happen to be available.†Thus, the musical material for the movement is of varying characters; these elements are assembled together in ways that allow them to comment on and inform each other. Some of these musical elements include: a traditional “overture†texture, a Basse de Trompette texture (with an organ reed stop in the left hand) common in French Baroque organ music, and the French keyboard toccata style.The second movement, Elegia, is dark and searching in tone. It begins with a rageful roar before quieting down to introduce its basic musical material – a simple “lament†theme in a folk-inflected style. This material is used for further explorations, building to passionate climaxes. Finally, the opening music returns, but this time with a whisper. The movement winds down to a sad conclusion.After the soul-searching of the second movement, the third movement, Rondeau, is sprightly and energetic. The basic material is a set of Baroque and Classical-style figurations (with a few American gospel inflections thrown in), firmly grounded in G major. After minor diversions, the original material continues to return and ends the work with unfettered joy.

Divertimento is a work for full orchestra not to be taken too seriously! It is a diversion! It contains 5 very diverse movements. First a prelude; second a generic ragtime tune; third a quiet reverie featuring a flute trio; fourth a march to the saloon on Saturday night and five a finale based on a hymn tune from the Sacred Harp. Each movement is short. Whole work is about 9' 30. All string parts are suitable for the average community orchestra. I have conducted the work with two different community orchestras and feedback was positive from both musicians and audience members.

Each movement is a concise musical vignette, delving into the unique character and mood of its respective key while reflecting a post-modern approach that embraces eclecticism, irony, and an intertextual dialogue with past musical traditions. This work is deeply influenced by the innovative spirit of Leonard Bernstein and Charles Ives, two iconic American composers who challenged conventional musical boundaries. Bernstein's ability to seamlessly blend diverse musical genres, from classical to jazz, resonates in the stylistic pluralism of this piece. Each movement offers a distinct musical landscape, reminiscent of Bernstein's kaleidoscopic score for West Side Story, where classical and contemporary idioms collide and coalesce into a vibrant sonic tapestry. Echoes of Charles Ives can be heard in the fragmented, juxtaposed themes and the adventurous harmonic language that defies traditional expectations. Like Ives' Three Places in New England, this composition revels in the collision of disparate musical elements, creating a rich tapestry that reflects the complexity and plurality of the modern musical landscape. Ives’ technique of layering different melodies and harmonies simultaneously is reflected in several movements where multiple key centers overlap, creating a soundscape that is at once disorienting and captivating. Youngstown is a city in Ohio near the state’s border with Pennsylvania which fueled America's burgeoning industrial revolution with its steel manufacturing. After World War II, however, Youngstown began a slow economic decline as its economy failed to diversify. This culminated on “Black Monday,” September 19, 1977, when several steel plants shut down, destroying over 5,000 jobs overnight, and tens of thousands more in the coming months.This piece attempts to capture the history and spirit of Youngstown through the multifaceted textures of the wind band. With light flowing textures representing the city's beginnings as an iron mining town to harsher, industrial sounds for its height of influence, both give way to the devastation of Black Monday. Despite this, a melodic throughline permeates the darkness, representing the survival of the soul of Youngstown.Youngstown is a challenging, soulful, and emotional piece that should be playable by varsity-level high school bands and college wind ensembles. Written with the first 4 notes of the A minor blues scale in mind, and using only 6 different notes, younger players will find instant success when learning its catchy bass line and repeated rhythms.Time Out can be performed by a minimal concert ensemble of flutes, clarinets, alto saxophones, trumpets, trombones, and percussion, and uses the A minor blues scale (A, C, D, Eâ™). I am incredibly excited to offer this selection to you in a effort to diversify concert band music repertoire for younger player that avoids using typical key signatures, but does not veer too far away from standard practices. It is suggested that players practice playing the first few notes of the concert Bâ™ scale (Bâ™, C, D, Eâ™), then swapping out concert Bâ™ for concert A. Make sure measures 1-3 are accurately learned by the wind players before learning the rest of the piece. In measure 39, there is a glissando, or “fall†that might be seen in jazz music. (The playback does not support accurate sounds for this effect.) It was re-recorded bilingually for Ron Howard's film Far and Away, and scenes from the film feature in the promotional music video. The song became Enya's second top-ten single on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 10, and reached number 12 on the Irish Singles Chart. If you notice a smiliarity between this and James Horner's 'Southampton' from the TITANIC soundtrack, it's because Book of Days was used as a temporary track whilst editing that film - the driving, undulating rhythms are perfect to provide a dramatic moment in any concert, particularly of film music and this arrangement has been made as part of a project to help expand and diversify the repertoire of pieces by women for concert bands around the world.

La Paloma, The Dove in English, is a popular Spanish song that has been produced and reinterpreted in diverse cultures, settings, arrangements, and recordings over the last 140 years. The song was composed and written by the Spanish composer from the Basque region Sebastián Iradier (later Yradier) in the 1850s. In 1879, it was registered at the copyright office in Madrid as a Canción Americana con acompañamiento de Piano. Iradier was to die in obscurity within few years, never to learn how popular his song would become.Very quickly, La Paloma became popular outside of Spain, particularly in Mexico, and soon spread around the world. In many places, including Afghanistan, Cuba, Colombia, Hawaii, the Philippines, Germany, Romania, Venezuela, Zanzibar, and Goa it gained the status of a quasi-folk song. Over the years, the popularity of La Paloma has surged and receded periodically, but never subsided. It may be considered one of the first universal popular hits and has appealed to artists of diverse musical backgrounds.
