In a soulful manner, the piece begins with the familiar song When Peace Like a River. This soulful hymn insists on finding peace, regardless of the world’s sorrows. The music then moves to a majestic trumpet processional. Entitled Soulful Peace, this tune honors those who made it possible for us to feel peace: parents, caregivers, family members, mentors, teachers, friends, and veterans who have served our country. Whether we feel the soulful melody in honor of them or in their memory, they remain an important part of our peace. After shifting to a calming woodwind verse, the processional then crescendos to a very emotive, full band verse. After the climax, the processional settles and gives way to a delicate chorus of It is Well With My Soul. The hymn tune begins delicately in the flutes, yet the brass echo the stately processional. The hymn majestically builds toward its own climax, accompanied by a trumpet fanfare. This triumphant piece reminds us that it can indeed be Well With My Soul!.

A brand new setting of this carol for wind quintet (Fl/Ob/Cl/Hn/Bssn).After a short introduction, we hear a fairly normal rendition of the tune with standard harmony. The second verse has the addition of fanfare-like motifs in the top two parts which add some sparkle to the tune. The intention is merely to heighten the feeling of 'announcement' which we get from the words. The melody is also much more decorated and placed into the middle of the ensemble.From Letter C there is an interlude of fanfares before the final verse at the grandioso. This is the loudest part of the setting and needs to sound warm, full and rich.This setting is intended to be played by any ensemble. I have kept the range used reasonable and it does not require any special techniques.

This marvelous arrangement of the Largo, based on the second movement of Antonin Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 in E minor, would be a fabulous addition to any music library and could be performed for concerts, recitals and church services, especially Funerals, but would be appropriate any time during the church year. This arrangement is suitable for high school and college students but professional musicians would also enjoy playing this selection. Included are a score and a complete set of parts (23 pages). This selection is one of the many arrangements from the The Regis Bookshar Trumpet Ensemble's extensive music library which are being made available for the first time.Symphony No. 9 in E minor, Op. 95 (subtitled From the New World and popularly know as the New World Symphony), was composed by Antonin Dvorak in 1893 while he was the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America from 1892 to 1895. It premiered at Carnegie Hall in New York City on December 16, 1893 and has been described as one of the most popular of all symphonies. The second movement of the symphony, upon which this arrangement is based, is marked Largo, and begins with a harmonic progression of chords which is then followed by a solo instrument playing the famous main theme.Dvorak was interested in Native American music and the African-American spirituals he heard in North America. While director of the National Conservatory he encountered an African-American student, Harry T. Burleigh, who sang traditional spirituals to him. Burleigh, later a composer himself, said that Dvorak had absorbed their spirit before writing his own melodies. Dvorak stated:    I am convinced that the future music of this country must be founded on what are called Negro melodies. These can be the foundation of a serious and original school of composition to be developed in the United States. These beautiful and varied themes are the product of the soil. They are folk songs of America and your composers must turn to them.He further explained how Native American music influenced his symphony:  I have not actually used any of these (Native American) melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint, and orchestral colour.In 1893, a newspaper interview quoted Dvorak as saying, I found that the music of the negroes and of the Indians was practically identical, and that the music of the two races bore a remarkable similarity to the music of Scotland. Most historians agree that Dvorak is referring to the pentatonic scale, which is typical of each of these musical traditions.Dvorak was influenced not only by music he heard, but also by what he had seen, in America. He wrote that he would not have composed his American pieces as he had if he had not seen America. It has been said that Dvorak was inspired by the wide open spaces of America, such as the prairies he may have seen on his trip to Iowa in the summer of 1893. Notices about several performances of the symphony include the phrase wide open spaces about what inspired the symphony and/or about the feelings it conveys to listeners.The theme from the Largo was adapted into the spiritual Goin' Home (often mistakenly considered a folk song or traditional spiritual) by Dvorak's pupil, William Arms Fisher, who wrote the lyrics in 1922. Regis Bookshar thought it would be wonderful if other instrumentalists could have the opportunity to play this beautiful melody, so, he has created this version for a String Orchestra. This is a peaceful bossa nova that is dedicated to Carla Bley, one of my favorite jazz composers. It is a fairly simple tune. Harmonically, it is built around D9 sus4 and Dm7 (b5) chords. I stumbled upon this pattern one day as I was playing piano. I immediately liked the feeling it creates and the shift in harmonic color (between implied Dorian and Locrian modes). This is the only tune of mine that uses it. The measure of 5/4 coming unexpectedly gives a push to the tune's momentum. As I worked on this tune I thought about having another section, but nothing clicked. I came to the conclusion that the music said everything it wanted to say in 18 bars. Published by Kevin Riley (A0.1043121). I Write the Songs is a popular song written by Bruce Johnston in 1975 and released on his album Going Public in 1977. Barry Manilow's version reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in January 1976 after spending two weeks atop the Billboard adult contemporary chart in December 1975. It won a Grammy Award for Song of the Year and was nominated for Record of the Year in 1977. Billboard ranked it as the No. 13 song of 1976. The original version was recorded by Captain & Tennille, who worked with Johnston in the early 1970s with the Beach Boys. It appears on their 1975 album Love Will Keep Us Together. The first release of I Write the Songs as a single was by teen idol David Cassidy from his 1975 solo album The Higher They Climb, which was also produced by Johnston. Cassidy's version reached number 11 on the UK Singles Chart in August of that year. Johnston has stated that, for him, the I in the song is God, and that songs come from the spirit of creativity in everyone. He has said that the song is not about his Beach Boys bandmate Brian Wilson. Manilow was initially reluctant to record the song, stating in his autobiography Sweet Life: The problem with the song was that if you didn't listen carefully to the lyric, you would think that the singer was singing about himself. It could be misinterpreted as a monumental ego trip.[3] After persuasion by Clive Davis, then president of Arista Records, Manilow recorded the song, and his version of I Write the Songs was the first single taken from the album Tryin' to Get the Feeling. It first charted on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 15, 1975, reaching the top of the chart nine weeks later, on January 17, 1976. Cash Box said of Manilow's version Good work Barry describing the song as melodic, ballad-like beginning grows into an operatic crescendo, all done in clear production that all age groups will appreciate.

Threshold is meant to portray time slowing down as you approach a black hole due to Gravitational Time Dilation. As such, I took a melody and reworked it in several different time signatures, to allow you to feel it stretch out or shrink, leading to moments where time basically goes out the window with prolonged moments of aleatoric metallic cacophony in the percussion section. Mixed in with the increasing and decreasing time signatures is something loosely resembling a fugue subject in the woodwinds. I’m not sure where it came from, but I love the feeling it gave this piece.By the way, I always thought it would be really cool if, during the end of the piece, the percussion could be spread throughout the performance venue to create a true surround sound experience, playing the aleatoric motive all around the audience.
