The flute soloist introduces himself with the traditional call of the North American Native flute (a repeated minor third phrase), which reappears from time to time in the rest of the piece, and then embarks upon a sort of jig in E flat major (second theme).The violin soloist copies these flute phrases but then introduces the third theme of the work in the related key of C minor, and the string orchestra comes in. This third tune is based on the old Westron Wynde melody but it uses an unusual rhythm (3 3 2) and the excitement gradually begins to mount. So the two soloists rhapsodise on the various tunes and permutations along with the orchestral strings, mixing the various tunes together. In due course the fourth theme comes in, and it is quite surprising how it fits in with the E flat major - C minor interplay, since it is merely a 12 tone row. It follows some of the traditions of the 20th Century atonal composers, but, due to the context in which it is set, it takes on a warmth seldom found in atonal music.

When I heard the news about how gravely ill he was I thought to myself that so often we give thanks, honor, or show our love when it is too late. Who wants to be that person? I was finally in the unique position to show my gratitude and love to my parents in the most special way that I could - through music from my heart and soul. I got the courage to look deeply within and then I began to write what was to become the first and second songs, respectively Tears from My Eyes: Remember Your Feelings and Tears from My Eyes: Reflection and Contemplation on my Tears from My Eyes: Songs from my Soul album.You will now be able to do just the same for your loved ones with this new music. Your intermediate level to advanced students and even professional musicians should find this to be a welcomed piece to learn and master. It looks deceptively simple but the learning and challenge comes from two smaller sub-ensembles playing together in their own collective units legato con moto while playing together as a whole music ensemble Everyone will enjoy and bathe in the beautiful harmonies that will resonate when the entire music ensemble begins to listen to each while playing together as a group. Your musicians will hone their skills in playing together with just the right balance that this song requires. Your musicians will also hone their skills for subdividing and maintaining an inner beat that is in sync with your conducting because there is no percussion and the notes are freely flowing on and off the down beat yet not sounding heavily syncopated when performed. When will you know when you have achieved the right balance and flow of the music? You will know when, because you will hear it and feel it when it comes into place. But I can help you with all of this with what I have to offer you today. I share with you now the final and 5th movement to Tears from my Eyes - Onward and Upward (for String Orchestra). This particular was created and produced after the Songs from My Soul album was sent for distribution. So, this song has yet to be officially released. All five movements will be released as an album Mourning in the Rain. This 5th movement Onward and Upward has a decisive emotional resolution and conviction in its pathos. She chose seven of these poems in a contrasting style and assembled them into a single work, striving to create an unusual orchestration which reflects this delicate, fantastic and sensual qualities of these poems. Her orchestration uses a small group of strings which are re-enforced by a harpsichord, a vibraphone, a harp and percussion, often superimposed, which serve to underline the delicate character of the poems. IN addition, she uses all styles of vocal production, from whispered passages to spoken words or screams, and from singing normally to sprechgesang. The work finishes serenely with a long melody in flute upon which the baritone repeats the last phrases of the poem in a long perdendosi. The voice and the flute slowly die away without there being a definite ending to the work, which allow the listener to imagine that the work continues, as in a waking dream. One could imagine hearing the echo of the words whispered by the baritone and the arien and luminous sounds of the flute which has lulled us as a soloist throughout the seven poems of the cycle. The orchestration is for 4 percussion, harp, harpsichord, piano and strings (44221). The piece generally lasts approximately fourteen minutes. The composer has intentionally broken with tradition by using instrumental notation for the vovcal part. This notations gives, in her view, a greater ease of reading when the voice exchanges with the flute. This version for flute, voice and piano is identical, as much as is possible, with the orchestral version, excpet for short segments in the 5th and 7th poems. These differences only affect the flute and piano parts and do not affect the vocal part. The Baritone may therefore use this score for performances with orchestra. The Flutist should use the part included in the orchestral parts for performances with orchestra. This work was first performed at the Villa Medicis during Thérèse Brenet time spend there during her Prix de Rome voyage. It was recorded in 2014 with Kurt Ollmann Baritone, Christel Rayneau, flute and the National Polish Radio Orchestra under the direction of Paul Wehage. The orchestral materials are on rental from the publisher.

Celebrate women scientists!Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) for flute, harp, and string orchestra, commissioned by Balcones Community Orchestra, celebrates the life and work of Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717), pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist.Duration 5:30 minutes.Commissioned by the Balcones Community Orchestra of Austin, Texas, Metamorphosis (2019) by Adrienne Inglis for solo flute, solo harp, and string orchestra, honors the life and work of pioneering entomologist, naturalist, and artist Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717). As she carefully documented in illustrated detail the life cycle of so many insects, Metamorphosis musically follows a butterfly from adult, egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The piece opens with an ostinato pattern in the strings over which the flute and harp play fluttering modal melodies. The strings and harp represent the egg stage with minimalistic layers of a single pitch. To recognize Merian’s time in Suriname and her discovery of many insect species there, a cheerful tune fashioned after traditional Arawak folk songs informs the busy larvae in the caterpillar canon. A bit of contemplative dorian polyphony laced with metamorphic machinations demonstrate the remarkable transformation of the pupa as well as Merian’s time at a devout Labadist religious commune. The butterfly emerges from the pupa with a flute/harp cadenza and then the strings underscore the adult butterfly with a return of the ostinato.
