Published by Musica Nova USA (A0.917412). The Four Seasons in the Basque Country is a 4 movement symphony for concert band. It is the Third Prize Winner of the 2020 American Prize in Composition - Concert Band. Grade 5, duration 27 minutes. The piece depicts four different places in the Basque country that the composer feels best show the changes of season. The first movement is Winter in the Costa Norte (Galerna). Galerna is on the northerncoast and is subject to harsh storms in the winter. As the piece starts off with a light-hearted dance in thepiccolo, a storm is approaching from afar. At first the storm seems to be in the distance but as it comes closer it overtakes the festivities in a bluster. For a short time two conductors are needed as the concertband is split into two groups – one showing the light-hearted dance led by the piccolo, the other thecacophony of the storm led by the percussion. The storm overtakes everything as it ends the movement with a flourish.The second movement Spring in Rioja Alavesa is a calming contrast to the first movement like the freshness of a spring day. The sun rises and shines beams of light onto the acres of grape vines. After a timea short rain comes to refresh and clean the plants.The third movement Autumn at the Guggenheim Museum is in a traditional 3rd movement form of a symphony, minuet and trio, but the harmonies sometimes use bitonality, having the melody in one key while the accompaniment is in another to suggest surrealism. The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbaois one of the world’s most famous museums, not only for the surreal art inside, but also because of the architecture of the building itself.The fourth movement Summer in Bilbao is based on a dance melody composed in the Ezpata- dantza Basque style. It employs a rhythmic element with alternating 6/8 and 3â„4 meters where the eighth notes are basically equal, but in the dance the 3â„4 meter is actually a little bit longer. This type of subtlemanipulation of rhythm is used similarly in the Viennese Waltz, when the 3rd beat would be stretched outto accommodate the dancers. The Ezpata-dantza dance continues until the Altza Gastiak, the officialsong of the Bilbao Athletic Club, the local soccer team of Bilbao, is heard. After this the Ezpata-dantzamelody is transformed from a happy dance to a triumphant melody and rousing finale.In The Four Seasons in the Basque Country all of the themes are original except for the short excerpt ofAltza Gastiakin the 4th movement. Some themes are composed in the style of Basque folk dances.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer. He recently retired from Berklee College of Music where he was Professor and Chair of Composition, serving on the faculty from 1979 to 2016. He has written over one hundred compositions for orchestra, band, chamber ensembles and soloists. He has won over sixty composition awards both nationally and internationally. His compositions include works published by several publishers in the United States, South America and Europe that have been performed extensively throughout the world. Many of his compositions are available on ITunes, Youtube and Soundcloud.He has been a frequent traveler to Spain since 1993 and has promoted compositions by Spanishcomposers around the world. He is the only composer who has been commissioned six times by Spanishbands for Certamen competitions, with each band winning first prize.His compositions are recorded on Albany Records, MSR Classics, Crystal Records, Mark Recordsand others. He has been a guest lecturer, conductor and performer at many colleges, universities and music festivals in the United States, Canada, Japan, South America and Europe. He was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania in 1954 and has Composition degrees from the Boston Conservatory and Indiana University.He now resides in Daytona Beach Shores, Florida

The Boar's Head CarolThis Christmas carol talks about a feast during midwinter in which a wild boar was served as the main dish and its head placed in a situated position to symbolize bravery and abundance. Closely related to the Norse tradition of boar sacrifice to their goddess Freyja during the feast of Winter Solstice, this song originated from an urban legend in Queen's College, Oxford back in the 15th century which tells of how a scholar from Queen’s College managed to kill an attacking boar and offered it at dinner.The song was first published in English during the 1520’s in a book entitled Christmase Carolles Newly Emprynted at London in the flete street, which was written by Jan van Wynken de Worde. Around the year 1726, John Walsh, a London music publisher, created a wonderful forgery in order to run around the copyright laws of the day: he pretended to pirate an edition supposedly published by the House of Roger in Amsterdam. This forgery included 12 Sonatas for solo instrument and continuo which had been composed by one George Frideric Handel (1685-1759). Around 1793 the House of Arnold published the same set, omitting two of the original 12 and replacing them with two others by Handel. So at this point there were a total of 14 solo sonatas available to the public.In the year 1879 Friedrich Chrysander issued these 14 works and several others in volume 27 of the German Handel Society’s Gesamtausgabe of Handel’s works. Since then they have been edited from this scholarly work many times, and afflicted by all sorts of permutations which reflect the various styles of performance in vogue over the years. One finds editions stripped of ornamentation but loaded with articulation and dynamic markings at one end of the spectrum, and editions with modest stenographic and florid ornamentation at the other. The Sonata in C Minor (London: 1712) is a pure example of the middle phase of the solo sonata da chiesa [church sonata]. The first three movements are indicative of the style found in sonatas derived from the disruptive canzona of the early 17th century. An initial slow movement with walking bass is followed by an imitative movement (in this case, a fugue with a chromatic subject), which in turn leads to an Adagio. This latter movement in the relative major is a ricercare containing several imitative entrances. The finale is a spirited binary-form Bourrée angloise, an item taken over from the French ordre or dance suite. The extraordinarily short length of this movement seems to indicate that a trio is missing here; therefore, I have added the bourrée from the Royal Fireworks Music of 1749 to act as a trio, but players are certainly free to omit it. Published by Rimorarte Edition (A0.1027777). Canticum Canticorum, for Grand String Orchestra & Mixed Choir, is a musical piece based on the old text with the same name from Vulgate. The Canticum Canticorum text also known as Song of Songs, the Song of Solomon, the Canticle of Canticles, (Old Greek: Άσμα Ασμάτων, same meaning as song of songs). As David Berlo once beautifully put this into words: Meanings are in people … not in the messages …. The elements and structure of a language … are only symbols …. Meanings are not transmittable … Only messages are transmittable, and meanings are not in the message, they are in the message-users! Therefore, I needed to understand and interpret the text itself, even before I wanted to try setting it to the music. However, in order to understand the text correctly, one should comprehend the origin of the text and get to know its author(s), at first. In the case of Canticum Canticorum, both the author and the origin of the text are obscure. Furthermore, even the approximate date/century/era of the birth and the cultural context in which the text was created, are far from clear. According to the scholars, the creation of the text ranges from the tenth century B.C.; the era of Solomon, up to the first century B.C., and the origin of it considers from Indian, Tamil, or Ethiopic literature to Palestinian one. Because of these vast spectra of dates and cultures, I had to read and understand the text, compare with other sources, find similarities in other languages and cultures, hermeneutically interpret it and search for those non-written or metaphorical clues that may lead to unfasten the mystery has been attached to the text. In order to achieve the most accurate and faithful interpretation of the text I also had to answer few questions regarding the style, structure, medium, architecture and techniques of the music in relation to the text. I have used string orchestra and mixed choir to render the ideas, since that is among highly versatile instrumentations capable of providing small and delicate whispers, heavenly voices, and intonation changes that is hardly-reproducible by other mediums as well as thunderous sounds. Although Canticum Canticorum is single-movement work, but still possible to distinguish three different sections: the beginning choral part that is a long fugue in 5 voices with the material of serial music which helps orchestra to enter and grow, the a-capella middle section consists of two contrasting but invisibly related atmospheres and the third section – the recapitulation of the ideas already presented, in both the text and the music. The culmination of the work; 11-parts choral, takes place in the third section, somewhere near the end of the piece. Canticum Canticorum, for Grand String Orchestra & Mixed Choir, is dedicated to the genius composer of our time, Maestro Prof. dr. h.c. Krzysztof Penderecki.

Kaye Bird was also a resident of Indiana, PA for 37 years and was a well respected teacher in the public schools there. It is at grade 3 level of difficulty and has several substitute parts for ensembles that may not have complete instrumentation. Although the scoring includes piccolo, oboes, bassoons, and French horns, these instruments are not needed to command a good performance.Sinfonietta adheres to classical forms of symphonies by composers such as Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven. The forms are very clear so the players of the band can learn this important history. The first movement is in standard Sonata Allegro form.The second movement is in A B A form and features a solo trumpet. The third movementis in a Rondo form (A B A C A) with three distinct themes. The work was commissioned in 2017 by the town of Magallón, Spain in celebration of the town’s industries of wine and olive oil. The mayor of the town of 1,000 inhabitants, Victor Manuel Chueca Rodriguez, was specific in his request for a composition at grade 3 level of difficulty. He also suggested the title as Symphony. Since it a three-movement composition instead of a four-movement composition (the normal Minuet and Trio movement is not included in this piece), the title of Sinfonietta instead of Symphony is used.Gregory Fritzeis a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. It was composed to feature the orchestral differences and colors in the symphonic band. There are several featured soloists throughout the piece, especially a long extended solo for alto saxophone. The piece also uses many textural variations showing several sections of chamber music. Pico del Teide is often selected as a contest piece when bands compete, especially in Spain. Pico del Teide was composed in 2005 and was premiered March 10, 2006 by Felipe Neri and the Banda Municipal of Tenerife. It won First Prize in the II Concurso Bienal de Composición de Música para Banda Ciudad de Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The piece is programmatic as it depicts a person climbing through the different sections of the Teide mountain - Los Roques, Las Cañadas, Pico del Teide, Teide and Pico Viejo to the top of Pico del Teide, which is the highest point in the Canary Islands.Gregory Fritze is a prize-winning composer and Fulbright Scholar, as well as an active performer and conductor. Composed about 1810, it wasn’t until 1867, forty years after Beethoven died, that Ludwig Nohl found, transcribed and published Für Elise. Alas, the original signed manuscript that Nohl discovered has since disappeared.     One mystery of course, is Who was Elise? While scholarly guesses have identified several women who could or might have been Elise, there is still no definitive proof.    Another mystery: Did Beethoven actually write this piece? The pianist and musicologist Luca Chiantore has suggested that the original Beethoven manuscript, upon which Ludwig Nohl claimed to base his transcription, may never have existed. On the other hand, there are two surviving preliminary sketches for Für Elise in Beethoven’s hand, and the British composer and musicologist Barry Cooper has pointed out that the rough draft closely resembles the published version.    In this brass quintet version, Trumpet 1 and Trumpet 2 handle the melody-i.e., the right hand in the piano score-for much of the piece, both taking turns and playing together. Most of the time Tuba, Horn in F and Trombone do the honors for the left hand. Horn in F does, however, take the melody line occasionally, sometimes with Trumpet 2 playing a harmony line above. The score performance level is marked Advanced, and with all the sixteenth notes, this arrangement may look difficult. But it’s really more Intermediate, with the only really tricky parts coming in sections D and G.

Countess Maria Theodora Paulina Dora Pejačević (10 September 1885 – 5 March 1923) was a Croatian composer, pianist and violinist and one of the first composers to introduce the orchestral song to Croatian music. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor is considered by scholars to be the first modern symphony in Croatian music. Pejačević is noted for her vocal compositions, piano miniatures, and string quartets, which were heavily influenced by the expressionist and modernist trends of the time. In her early career, Pejačević’s primary themes were highly representative of the Romantic period, but this would change after her experience working as a paramedic in the First World War after which her works reflected the philosophic movement of nihilism and discussed motifs of death, isolation, and futility of war. This wonderful 'Elegie', originally composed for violin and piano, dates from 1913, just before the outbreak of war and is dedicated to Johannes Nádherny-Borutin, an important Czech politician. This arrangement has been made as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide concert band repertoire.

Arte Nova Music Lab #3005423. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742401). The four orchestral suites (called ouvertures by their author), BWV 1066–1069 are four suites by Johann Sebastian Bach. The name ouverture refers only in part to the opening movement in the style of the French overture, in which a majestic opening section in relatively slow dotted-note rhythm in duple meter is followed by a fast fugal section, then rounded off with a short recapitulation of the opening music. More broadly, the term was used in Baroque Germany for a suite of dance-pieces in French Baroque style preceded by such an ouverture. This genre was extremely popular in Germany during Bach's day, and he showed far less interest in it than was usual: Robin Stowell writes that Telemann's 135 surviving examples [represent] only a fraction of those he is known to have written;[1] Christoph Graupner left 85; and Johann Friedrich Fasch left almost 100. Bach did write several other ouverture (suites) for solo instruments, notably the Cello Suite no. 5, BWV 1011, which also exists in the autograph Lute Suite in G minor, BWV 995, the Keyboard Partita no. 4 in D, BWV 828, and the Overture in the French style, BWV 831 for keyboard. The two keyboard works are among the few Bach published, and he prepared the lute suite for a Monsieur Schouster, presumably for a fee, so all three may attest to the form's popularity.Scholars believe that Bach did not conceive of the four orchestral suites as a set (in the way he conceived of the Brandenburg Concertos), since the sources are various, as detailed below.The Bach-Werke-Verzeichnis catalogue includes a fifth suite, BWV 1070 in G minor.
