Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768518). Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). Texts in the Oratorio de Noël is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental). 2. Luke 2,8-14. 3. Psalm 39,1. 4. John 11.27. 5. Psalm 117, 26-28. 6. Psalm 2,1 and Gloria Patri. 7. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.818192). An arrangement of the traditional Christmas Carol The Lord at first did Adam make for three-part (SABar) choir and organ by Philip Le Bas. This ancient carol tells the story of the fall of Adam, causing humanity to be wrapt in sin. Yet out of God's goodness we are redeemed by the birth of Christ. The listeners are exhorted to begin an holy life to live, and to rejoice and merry be, for this is Christmas Eve. The version presented here is intended for parish choirs lacking in tenor and bass singers, but with a good organ! It starts in a slightly dark, primeval way with open fifths in the organ part, developing into a minor key throughout the verses, but with a decidedly more positive feel in G major in each of the refrains. The accompaniment expresses the drama expressed in the lyrics without the choral parts becoming too involved, and the whole piece (4 1/2 minutes) ends on a celebratory Tierce de Picardy: for this is Christmas Eve!.

This short Requiem by Giacomo Puccini (1858–1924) was commissioned by the publisher Giulio Ricordi, who wanted to mark the fourth anniversary (27 January 1905) of the death of Verdi by celebrating the memory of the King of 19th century Italian opera with a work composed by his successor on the opera stages of the world. According to a note by the composer on the first page of the manuscript, the piece was completed on 14 January 1905 in Milan and thus it belongs to the period in which the composer from Lucca had reached his full maturity, at a point in time between the fiasco of the premiere of Madama Butterfly at La Scala, Milan (1904) and the premiere of his next opera, La Fanciulla del West (1910).Today the work is often performed, since this setting for three voices can be easily performed by amateur choirs and requires only a viola (or violin) and a harmonium (or organ) as accompanying instruments.Our edition is for treble- or female voices choir, viola (violin) and harmonium (organ).

St Helen's church in Hollinfare celebrated its 500th anniversary in 1997 and invited the gentlemen of Manchester Cathedral Choir to sing at the celebratory service. The service included a Te Deum and Jubilate, which I wrote especially for the purpose. The Te Deum is a full setting with organ and alto, tenor and bass singers. The Jubilate is a psalm chant. Both are available on this site. The sound sample in each case is the original performance.The words of the Te Deum are: We praise thee, O God : we acknowledge thee to be the Lord. All the earth doth worship thee : the Father everlasting. To thee all Angels cry aloud : Â the Heavens, and all the Powers therein. The long, lyrical melody borne forward by the steady, quiet, powerful accompaniment conveys a tranquil sacredness. The sense of entreaty and desire for benediction expressed in the Agnus Dei seems a natural fit with Handel’s famous melody. An instrumental introduction leads to the voice calling out agnus dei, qui tollis peccata mundi. An instrumental meditation follows leading back to the conclusion of the piece. Arrangements for other ensembles are also available (Vocal Solo, SAB, SATB) as well as separate versions featuring the addition of Solo Violin, Flute, Oboe or Clarinet and soloist with chorus. Difficulty is moderate for the singers, instrumental soloist and pianist and is suitable for a sacred setting or the concert hall. Duration approximately 4 minutes. Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England.This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ.The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm.
