An avid birder and environmentalist, she lives in the rural hill country of Central Texas.Poet Kim Stafford grew up in Oregon, Iowa, Indiana, California, and Alaska, following his parents as they taught and traveled through the West. He is the author of a dozen books of poetry and prose, and the founding director of the Northwest Writing Institute at Lewis & Clark College, where he has taught since 1979. He holds a PhD in Medieval Literature from the University of Oregon, and has worked as a printer, photographer, oral historian, editor, and visiting writer at a host of colleges and schools, and offered writing workshops in Italy, Scotland, and Bhutan.Shelter in Place by Kim Stafford (used with permission)Long before pandemic prisoned us,the trees knew how to guard their placewith roots and shade.Moss found how to hug a stone for life.Every stream knows how to move in place,stay home and yet flow outward,sending bounty far.Now is our time to practice-now to sing from balconies,now send words of comfortby any courier,now to hoard lonesome generosity-and then to shine in all directions like stars.Program note: Shelter in Place (2021) by Adrienne Inglis, commissioned by Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, April 2021, sets former Oregon poet laureate Kim Stafford’s poem Shelter in Place (2020) for SSAATB mixed choir with Oregon nature soundtrack created by Chris Clark-Johnson, Lewis & C lark College class of 2021. Written during the coronavirus pandemic, the poem expresses how quarantine can serve as a conduit for healing, how words of comfort flow despite barriers, and how the paralysis of sheltering in place generates creative movement. The music and poem draw inspiration from ancient forest wisdom, shown musically with a pentatonic scale. The tight harmonies of Locrian mode bind moss to stone and stream to its own flow. Then vocal expression bursts forth with lush harmonies as singers serenade from balconies, sharing compassion through music. Returning to the pentatonic scale, we overcome obstacles and send generosity beyond our ancient and modern world into the celestial realm. (1604–68), hailed as the Horace of Germany and considered one of the greatest Latin poets of any era.In the case of the three poems selected, Balde’s vivid imagery and mastery of Latin poetics are put in service of religiousexpression. The poems are filled with countless allusions to the classical poetic tradition; notably, he creates a strongcorrelation between the Virgin Mary of his Christian tradition (Balde was a Jesuit priest) and the goddesses invoked inclassical Latin poetry. Thus, Balde uses the older forms to express something that was, for him, contemporary andrelevant. (An analogue to this use of language is the idea of creating new music to be played on period instruments.)The opening sinfonia begins with an ascending pattern of triads, which returns throughout the work. The forwardmomentum is interrupted several times before the movement settles tonally. The first choral movement employs abouncy momentum to set the celebratory poem on the Virgin’s assumption. The second movement is a prayerful song onthe acceptance of death; it is spare and meditative, unfolding as a series of sectional canons over several drones. To give unity to the composition, the author adopted a series of chordal motifs that serve as leitmotifs, formed by two or three chords symbolizing some basic concepts that cyclically reappear in the various pieces (love, life, death, etc.).The ensemble comprises four parts: first tenor, second tenor, baritone, bass, which can be performed by soloists or by a choral group. In the piece Bella Cantatrice, it is possible to entrust the main melody to a tenor soloist. Although a reduction for piano is printed in the score, its purpose is only to support the voices during rehearsal. Public performance is intended for a cappella voices.

The seventh movement, Christmas Spirit, reminds us, in seventeenth-century words, of how we should share our good fortune with those who have need of it, and in the last movement, Christmas Celebration, the audience is invited to join in, with the last verse of the well known ‘We wish you a merry Christmas’ Some separate movements are also available: Christmas Recipe, Festival (Christmas) Grace, and Christmas Celebration. Alan Bullard’s choral works are performed worldwide, and many have been recorded and broadcast. He has a growing reputation for music that choirs enjoy performing, and which speaks directly to audiences.
