This setting of the traditional 15th century French carol is derived from the arranger's SATB settings but here with keyboard accompaniment and C instrument plus two optional handbells. The first three verses are simplified to mostly unison or in canon on the 3rd verse. An instrumental interlude features the C instrument and accompaniment in more expansive and contemporary treatment. In the final verse the choral writing and harmonies create a more contemporary feel to this 15th century classic. It then closes with the hollow open fifth harmony from the beginning of the piece.

The text is the English translation by Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) of Martin Luther's versification of Psalm 130, known in the Latin liturgy as the De profundis (Psalm 129). It is found in many English hymnals Out of the Depths. The chorale tune associated with Aus tiefer Noth is attributed to Martin Luther; it appeared in Johann Walther's chorale-book of 1524. Using this five-hundred year old tune, this anthem draws on 15th-century Flemish polyphony and mid-20th century jazz (specifically, parallel motion of block-chords, walking bass, and major-seventh chords) for its tonal character.This work calls for optional organ and SSATB choir, in which the Soprano I part may be sung by children.This psalm is most associated with Lent, penitential worship, funerals, and worship following tragedies and catastrophes. The present setting was composed by James Siddons in January 1989, and is the first in his long series of settings and interpretations of the Psalms for a wide variety of vocal and instrumental combinations and musical styles.

I wrote this piece in 2018 to mark the 50th anniversaryof the Toronto Chamber Choir, a fine early music choir I have sung with since 1998.Using the  opening of the well-known Gregorian chant Gaudeamus omnes (and changingthe text to let us rejoice in music, Gaudeamus is a five- minute musical history tourthrough the various time periods the TCC sings. It begins with plainchant, then two-voiceorganum of the 11th-century Notre Dame school of Leonin and Perotin, followed bythree-voice hocket of a slightly later period. Then a nod to the 15th-century Dufay motetNuper rosarum flores (which the TCC has performed.) Next comes some 16th-centuryTudor music -- Byrd, say -- including some false relations and a typical English cadence.Then comes an allusion to Purcell, specifically the pleasing dissonance of the “voice of theTurtle†from My Beloved Spake. Then comes a little Bach-like fugue (or fughetta) based onthe Gaudeamus motif. Since the TCC rarely performs Classic/Romantic repertoire, wejump immediately to a jazzy ending in compound meter -- imagine Byrd meets Brubeck,based on one of my own earlier pieces for solo piano, but with elements of the Gaudeamusmelody. And all that in five minutes. Phew!

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Veni, Veni, Emmanuel) is a Christian hymn for Advent and Christmas. This hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century. The Latin metrical form of the hymn was composed as early as the 12th century. The 1851 translation of the Latin lyrics by John Mason Neale in this arrangement continues to be used the most. This three-part arrangement (soprano, alto, tenor) with a piano accompaniment is appropriate for EASY INTERMEDIATE skill levels and above. The ranges are: Soprano (D to G), Alto (A to C) and Tenor (D to D). A separate sheet with lyrics for voices only is included with the score.

Restaurador is a historical opera about the time in which it was restored (in the 19th century it would be called reconquistar, while in the 15th century it was called restoration), taking advantage of the strong internal crises of the Muslim world in the South of Spain. Alfonso de Arcos was part of the restoration of Jimena de la Frontera (Cádiz), the town of Estepona (Málaga), helping many situations in North Africa, Alcazarseguer (Morocco), being mayor of Tarifa and who treasured the idea of situation and who will take Gibraltar, being its first mayor. In his last years he settled in Seville in the Monastery of Santa Maria de las Cuevas in La Cartuja, where he died. In which everything received in this historical period testamentally, his inheritance, was not given to the family, but to all the needy people of Tarifa and Gibraltar, and whoever needed it via the Cartuja monastery itself. This was the case with his entire inheritance for 200 years. Of which the family is very proud.Today Alicia Dominguez Arcos is from the Arcos family, the generational wave of Alfonso de Arcos. Published by Carl Hammer (A0.946879). The lyrics for Let Our Gladness Know No End come to us from a 19th century translation of the Czech Christmas carol Narodil se Kristus pán. Although the English translator/lyricist is unknown, one source attributes the translation to Laura Underwood in 1884. The melody derives from a Latin and Czech hymn from before 1500 contained in the Gradual of the Czech Silver Museum in Kutná Hora. This new arrangement treats the lyrics as a joyful call and response (anitphonal) celebration of the birth of Christ.
