Advanced harpists with limited access to string players will appreciate the instrumentation of the work - flute, clarinet, and pedal harp. While the full score contains no harp-specific markings, the harp part is well-edited (by a harpist) with pedal changes, pedal charts, and all necessary flute/clarinet cues. The left hand accompaniment is more developed than most of Mr. Mahan's selections. C and F levers required. Montecito Morning is in the key of D, 2 pages, with lovely embellished 7th harmonies. Walking Down Butterfly Lane is very easy to play, but the harmonies make up for the simplicity. Treasure of San Ysidro has a mysterious sound to it. Key of A minor with a variety of rhythmic changes throughout, an interesting composition to play. Canyon has a breezy feel to it, key of C, with an easy left hand. Lotusland as another mysterious sounding composition in the key of B minor, switching back and forth from ¾ to 6/8. Montecito Moon in ¾, key of C has a busy left hand, full rolled chords in the right hand along with moving eighth notes. A View from Eucalyptus Hill has a lovely melody with a variety of left hand changes throughout. Moves from ¾ to 4/4 and back to ¾. The text was written by Claudia Frances Hernaman (1838-1898), an English composer of more than 150 hymns, many of them for children. She first published Lord Who Throughout These 40 Days in 1873 in The Child’s Book of Praise. This hymn is frequently sung in services throughout the Lenten season, particularly in Catholic and Lutheran denominations.

Perform this original work of Celtic Irish setting from her CD (Gypsy Road,2012) scored for harp ensemble of intermediate to advanced players.  Scored in E minor with no lever changes it features a creative slip-jig with lush and effective harmonies.  A rare opportunity to showcase programmatic skills for the harp ensemble.  The dark and mysterious musical message will touch the hearts of all who hear it.About the CompositionI wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. She is the owner of her recording and publishing label Blue Steer Studios(ASCAP) which allows her to combine her composing skills with knowledge of both the business and publishing aspects of music industry. Winner of a Silver Ace Award from the Las Vegas Film Festival she has composed music for all types of media, including Film/TV, web and advertising, and her own personal music in audio CD and sheet music. In 2021 she took time off from composing to relocate her studio to Eastern Washington (Spokane) and is now getting started on new projects and pursuing music composition full time. The right hand plays the melody with a series of long overlapping brackets, scales, and rolled chords. The left hand is less busy, playing many octaves, 10th interval rolled chords, and lever changes.Type of Harp: The big harp version is for 33 strings and larger, but the small harp version works for 26 strings and larger.Range: For big harps: The lowest note is C, two octaves below middle C. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q15608). Sophia Giustani Dussek's opus 2 consists of two books of three sonatas each for the harp. The Sonata in C minor appears in the first book, published by Pleyel in Paris in 1796. In that book, the composer's first name was not mentioned, so the sonatas were falsely ascribed to Johann Ludwig Dussek, who was quite well known in Paris at that time (cf. RISM, D 4605). In the Thematic index of the works of J.L. Dussek by Howard Craw, opus 2 is given as a set of 4 violin sonatas. An edition of the harp sonatas published by Corri, Dussek and Co. in London and Edinburgh is ascribed to Sophia Dussek (cf. RISM, D 4649). The new edition of the sonata published by Schott has been corrected accordingly. The edition is part of the ABRSM syllabus and Trinity syllabus 2007 (grade 7).
