Published by Gary Friedman (A0.889878). The original version for cello and piano was my first formal composition when I started composing in 1998. When my brother, Ralph, heard it, he cried and said that he wished that my parents could have heard it, too. The form and harmonies of this piece are mostly traditional, but there are a few surprises. There is a cantorial cello cadenza. A trumpet and tuba are added to the usual chamber orchestra with piano, just to play an Oh My Darling Clementine counter-melody in one variation but flute and bassoon have cues and can do this nicely. The recording of the beautifully expressive performance by Ken Hoppe and the College of Marin Symphony conducted by Tara Flandreau (who edited the string parts) is of such poor sound quality that I have uploaded the computer playback as the sound clip, which is of course quite mechanical sounding. I have a great fondness for the lower string instruments: I am a bass player, my mother is a cellist, as are both my daughters; my own ensemble includes two violas, a cello and a bass, and for the instrumentation of my opera Medea I omit the entire violin section from the orchestra. As I have written a number of works for solo instrument or voice with orchestra I welcomed the opportunity to write a concerto for cello and orchestra and especially one which focuses particularly on the instrument’s lyrical qualities. Although the piece is in one continuous movement, and the soloist is playing almost without a break, it nevertheless falls into distinct sections which are recognisable by a shift of tempo as well as by a change in the music’s character. One of the early ideas Julian Lloyd Webber and I discussed was that it might form a companion piece to one of the Haydn concertos. Given my friendship with some members of the English Chamber Orchestra and my awareness of their repertoire, this suggested a number of particular musical references. The subtitle to the work, for example, combines the subtitles of two idiosyncratic Haydn symphonies and I allude to them in different ways but chiefly through orchestration: for The Philosopher by including a section in the concerto where the orchestration resembles that of the symphony’s first movement (pairs of English and French horns, muted violins and unmuted lower strings); for The Farewell, by the progressive reduction in the orchestration towards the end. Indeed, apart from the orchestral tutti in the last few bars, the last pages of the score are virtually for string quartet. The subtitle also refers to my own background as a philosophy graduate... The piece was commissioned by Philips Classics for Julian Lloyd Webber and is dedicated to him. The first performance was given by Julian Lloyd Webber and the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Judd, 21 November 1995, Barbican Hall, London. Gavin Bryars.

Finale-Festival : In d minor in 4/4 time, tried to describe the excitement of the festival atmosphere, and it was composed in a rondo style quoting korean traditional Children's nursery rhyme “Fox.â€The music was world premiered on June 1, 2019 at the Seoul Arts Center (IBK Chamber Hall) by Professors Kyung-sun Lee(violin), and Hee-seung Joo(piano).This music transcribed for Cello and Piano was a Competition Repertorie Requirement of Tennessee Cello Workshop(2021.2.26.-28), University of Tennessee, School of Music. Since 2004, his compositions have been periodically performed by I Musici. His compositions have also been performed and recorded by the Vienna Waltz Orchestra, in Austria, the French Chamber Orchestra in France, and the Sophia Chamber Orchestra in Russia. Mr. Kim is a former Dean of Changwon National University’s College of Performing Arts. Currently he teaches student as Emeritus professor of Changwon National University.

All piece's main theme is generally based on Oriental pentatonic tone, And for 2nd movement, there is especially natural harmonics is used for special tone effect, to express oriental flute sound. and for 3rd movement, adapted Korean Traditional rhythm, for example, such as Kutkuri Jajinmori. 4th movement is major key, but it has a deep sorrow. They still reflect Rogl’s personal musical language, creating an intense yet meditative atmosphere. Though they demand deep concentration from the performer, the technical requirements are quite within the reach of advanced cello students.Born in 1960 and initially self-taught, Austrian composer Helmut Rogl completed university studies in Linz and Salzburg with Helmut Schiff, Gunter Waldek and Helmut Eder. His oeuvre ranges from solo pieces to orchestral and stage works, including commissions from the Munich Philharmonic, the Vienna Chamber Symphony, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, and the Bruckner Orchestra Linz. His achievements have been recognised in a number of national honours, one of them being the Landeskulturpreis für Musik, Upper Austria, in 2001. A series of cello works has resulted from his collaboration with Martin Rummel, who has edited this publication.
