Published by Nick Baron (A0.910948). One of the most beautiful pop songs of the Nineties, if not all time, Seal's 'Kiss From A Rose' is a favourite for millions worldwide. This arrangement has been performed at concerts and weddings by it's creator, Nick Baron, in his own marimba duo, and it is now here on sale for the first time.Seal's masterpiece is poignant, elegant and soulful; these characteristics shared by the marimba with its soft attack and warm resonance make it a perfect fit.The arrangement follows the form of Seal's original but there is creativity in the marimba writing; for example the way a groove is often created between the ostinato rhythms of the two marimbas to suggest the presence of a rhythm section. Both parts are for four mallets and it is written in the key of C#. This arrangement would be an excellent addition to a conservatoire-level concert programme. Requirements: two players, four mallets each, two 4.3 octave marimbas.

Dragon was originally inspired by the Chinese-American actor Bruce Lee, and hisfilm: “Enter The Dragon.” As I arranged this piece, I was captivated by thesong's story as it builds from sparse beginnings into a busy roar of commotion. Iarranged this piece intending to mimic various aspects of the physical layout ofthe ukulele. From rapid 32nd notes that mimic fast strumming to the grace notepatterns and chord structures mimicking the layout of ukulele strings from top tobottom. I also wanted this piece to take advantage of the full range and sound ofthe marimba, so I added an introductory chorale section and several other tweaksthat make this piece not only an ode to the beautiful ukulele sound but also acelebration of marimba in combination with live electronic effects.

While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery. He also studied extensively with Sharon Isbin and Sal Salvador. Based in Connecticut, he is active as a soloist and in the chamber music scene. While these pieces may in fact work as etudes for marimba I have purposefully renamed them. Whether or not they work as etudes I will leave up to each individual percussionist and teacher the extent of their didactic usefulness. Ultimately though all music can be used for study and my wish is these pieces can be used for study and performance. They are relatively brief and ideally played in sets, the number and selections being determined by the performer. Guitarist Neal Fitzpatrick has a B.M. from the Hartt School where he studied with Alan Spriestersbach and his M.M. from The Yale School of Music where he studied with Benjamin Verdery.
