It is usually played by the instruments called Gamelan. Bali is an island in Indonesia rich with cultural traditions that are very much rooted in myths and legends. After understanding deeper of the legend of “Kebo Iwaâ€, I was so drawn to the character and the plot that I decided to tell the story in my piano composition. I was able to use different kinds of musical techniques to express different moods. One of them is to apply the Pentatonic ‘Balinese Pelog’ Scale in B flat Major, which represents the majority of the Gamelan sound that is usually transcribed into Western notations. Below is the synopsis the “L’amore di Kebo Iwaâ€. A Once upon a time, in Bali, there was a husband and a wife who dearly wanted to have a baby. They prayed to God for a very long time. Finally, God heard their prayers and blessed them with a baby boy. But there was something special about this baby boy: he was very big- a giant baby. They named him Kebo Iwa. Kebo Iwa grew up with a good heart and became a gentleman. He was a kind hearted giant; he protected the village dearly. One day, the King of Majapahit from Java wanted to conquer Bali. He had heard about Kebo Iwa and knew that his army would lose to Kebo Iwa. B Therefore, the King of Majapahit tricked Kebo Iwa. He invited Kebo Iwa to Java island, promising that he would arrange a wedding for Kebo Iwa to marry his daughter, the beautiful Majapahit princess. Kebo Iwa was so in love with the princess, so he happily travelled to Java island. C After he arrived in Java, the King of Majapahit asked a favour from Kebo Iwa to dig a well, with the reason for it being the dry season. Kebo Iwa then sincerely gave some help and started digging a big, giant well. D However, the King Majapahit never meant to deliver his promise to Kebo Iwa. Instead, the King Majapahit commanded the troops to cover the well with mud and boulders. But when Kebo Iwa realized, it was too late. He was already in the position that was far too deep below - at the bottom of the well. Kebo Iwa then cried loudly and sadly with a broken heart until his last breath. He was buried alive. Soon after that, the Majapahit troops attacked and conquered Bali. E At last, the well was covered and grew a hill of flowers. To this day, the Bali villagers still remember Kebo Iwa as their hero. To honor him, they erected a giant statue of Kebo Iwa in Gianyar, Bali, as a memorial.

That is to say, music was an essential part of his life. He in fact first began writing songs in 1523, sometimes writing the melody as well as the lyrics. Luther was certainly able to evaluate the composers of his time. He thought especially highly of Josquin des and Ludwig Senfl. He was also acquainted, with this in mind, with other composers and their works. Legacy The Lutheran musical ethos soon covered all of Germany and later significantly fashioned Protestant musical culture. Heinrich Schütz and Johann Sebastian Bach are the most compelling evidence of this Protestant musical culture. Additionally, as a point often overlooked, the pedal organ, first refined in northern Germany, became universally prevalent. As a matter of fact, Dieterich Buxtehude established a regular evening organ concert series in Lübeck. Another key point is that this concert series, in turn, spread North German Musical ideas worldwide. Luther was especially convinced that music is a beautiful and exclusive offering of the divine.

The Pitcairn Islands are a remote British colony in the South Pacific, famous for being the site where the mutineers from the HMS Bounty landed. The islands’ population have always been very small (currently numbering around 50), yet, aside from the official anthem of God Save the King (which is not heard often on the islands), there have been, and continue to be, many unofficial anthems in use in the colony.In Diana Jolliffe Belcher’s 1871 book “The Mutineers of the Bounty and their Decendants in Pitcairn and Norfolk Island†it is reported that a local poem by Rev. G. H. Nobbs was set to the tune “Rousseau’s Dream†(sheet music) and was considered by Pitcairners to be their anthem at the time. It is not known for how long this was considered as their anthem, however. Also, in 1856, several Pitcairners resettled on Norfolk Island as Pitcairn had become too small. The local anthem now in use on Norfolk Island, Come Ye Blessed, is also referred to as the “Pitcairn Anthemâ€, and more than likely was brought to the island by the Pitcairn settlers, suggesting that this anthem was in use on Pitcairn at that time, and is also heard on Pitcairn currently.Currently, the song “We From Pitcairn Island†(to the tune of the hymn “The Royal Telephoneâ€) is used as an unofficial anthem at gatherings and the like. The lyrics were written by Pitcairner Melva Evans with assistance from the local Seventh Day Adventist Pastor L. A. J. Webster in 1962 to be performed by the school children on board a visiting cruise ship, but the song became identified by residents as their unofficial anthem. Other songs, such as “The Goodbye Song†(written by Pitcairner Amelia Young), and the hymn “In The Sweet By and By†are considered unofficial “Pitcairn songs†at gatherings as well. (“Goodbye songsâ€, sung to ships as they leave the country, are a tradition in many Polynesian islands, and are part of the patriotic music of those countries.).

Level One (Book 1, Part 1) begins with basic rhythms (quarter, half, dotted half, and whole) in the keys of C, G, D. Each key begins with several songs in the basic five-finger position, then adds either one note above or one note below, then adds 3/4 time, then adds songs in which the hand is not in the basic five-finger position for that key. Level One (Book 1, Part 2) continues with the keys of A, E, B. Eighth notes are introduced in the key of E. Level One (Book 1, Part 3) contains the keys of F#, Db, and Ab. Likewise, it appeals even to folks who don’t normally listen to serious music. This is probably because of his most noteworthy melodies. Above all, he writes with great emotion. This certainly makes a most noteworthy if not an unforgettable impact. Education First of all, He attended classes at the Russian Musical Society. Even more, He also attended the St. Petersburg Conservatory. There he studied music theory with Nikolai Zaremba. He also consequently studied composition with Anton Rubenstein. It seems like Rubenstein came under criticism from a group of Russian composers known as the Five. The Five The Five certainly rejected Western musical influences. They rather sought to use elements from Russian music. They furthermore wanted to use more exotic musical materials. Western Techniques More than other Russian composers, Tchaikovsky studied modern Western music. He certainly develops his music like the European masters. So, rather than repeating a motive, he moves to a new key. He then introduces a different theme in the new key. Hence, he maintained his independence from the Five. Even more, he became the first Russian composer of international stature. Influences Tchaikovsky was probably influenced in his ballet scoring by Léo Delibes. Richard Wagner influenced his symphonic writing. Tchaikovsky’s most famous works include the 1812 Overture, The Nutcracker Suite, and Swan Lake. Also famous are the Violin Concerto in D and the six symphonies. The greatest of the six symphonies may be No. 6, the Pathétique. Nutcracker Suite, Op. 71a The Nutcracker Suite is a ballet that was performed for the first time in December 1892 in St. Petersburg. To begin with, the original ballet failed to attract a positive reception. However, the ballet suite became probably one of the most popular of all of Tchaikovsky’s works. Then I came upon a book on numerology by Annemarie Schimmel, The Mystery of Numbers. In it I discovered a lot of fascinating things, mystical and magical, associated with each number from one to 10,000. Since I would be writing a piece for a duo, double digits would do the trick. Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card. And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella. I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night. IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers. V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned. VI. L'Amore Love in a tropical paradise. VII. Il Carro Triumphant in battle, the gladiators ride into town on chariots. VIII. La Giustizia Justice is swift and unrelenting. IX. Il Vecchio The Old Man reminisces. X. La Ruota della Fortuna Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably. XI. La Fortezza Strength and fortitude will prevail. XII. Il Penduto Lamentation for the Hanged Man. Then I came upon a book on numerology by Annemarie Schimmel, The Mystery of Numbers. In it I discovered a lot of fascinating things, mystical and magical, associated with each number from one to 10,000. Since I would be writing a piece for a duo, double digits would do the trick. Number 22 stood out. It has two important associations: the Hebrew alphabet has 22 letters, and there are 22 major arcana cards or allegories of the Tarot. Perfect! I could write 22 pieces, each a musical rendering of a card. And, coincidentally, this work will opus 66.For pictorial inspiration, I bought a Pierpont Morgan Library copy of the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards from 15th century Italy. For musical inspiration, I listened to the wonderful salon music of the Polish composer Frederic Chopin, the American composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk, and the Brazilian composer Ernesto Nazareth.The 22 pieces in the Visconti-Sforza Tarot Cards are: Zero Il Matto The Fool entertains the gathered guests with a tarantella. I. Il Saltimbanco The Mountebank shuffles his cards and does a samba. II. La Papessa The High Priestess concocts a magic potion. III. L'Imperatrice The Empress dances all night. IV. L'Imperatore The Emperor promenades into the Great Hall and inspects the courtiers. V. Il Papa The Pope makes a proclamation that all sinners will be pardoned. VI. L'Amore Love in a tropical paradise. VII. Il Carro Triumphant in battle, the gladiators ride into town on chariots. VIII. La Giustizia Justice is swift and unrelenting. IX. Il Vecchio The Old Man reminisces. X. La Ruota della Fortuna Fortunes rise and fall unpredictably. XI. La Fortezza Strength and fortitude will prevail. XII. Il Penduto Lamentation for the Hanged Man. XIII. Il Morte Death lurks around the corner. XIV. La Temperanza Temperance in A major. XV. Il Diavolo The Devil seduces with his charm and wit. XVI. La Torre The tower topples and crashes onto the populace gathered below. XVII. La Stella Twinkle, twinkle, little star ... XVIII. La Luna Minuet for moonstruck lovers. In my solo piano arrangement for easy intermediate players, the L.H. plays the bass line and the R.H. plays the melody and some filler chords. This arrangement gives the performer the opportunity to participate with the audience. The performer may use the audience to simulate the drums (pattern provided) and hand claps. The audience may be divided into four groups, each one playing either the bass drum, hi-hat, snare drum and hand claps.

Here is a flowing instrumental trio arrangement (for FLUTE and/or VIOLIN duet with PIANO accompaniment) of a beautiful hymn from the early 1900's titled My Song by D. S. Hakes. The original lyrics were inspired by the following Bible verse: The Lord is my strength and song. Psalm 118:14. This hymn may be better known by its Spanish title Mi Redentor es Cristo (O Jesus, my Redeemer) when used with lyrics translated by Edgar L. Maxwell. The original lyrics by F. E. Belden are shown below.Both the FLUTE and the VIOLIN get to lead with the melody at times making this a fun and equally challenging piece for both instruments while adding variety for the listeners. The FLUTE plays the melody for the first verse and then the two instruments alternate for the second verse. The VIOLIN leads with the melody for the third verse. The song begins in the key of C major for the first two verses, then transitions to the key of G major during the piano interlude before the final verse.Though notated with FLUTE on part 1 and VIOLIN on part 2, the ranges are also accessible for other combinations of C instruments such as 2 VIOLINS or 2 FLUTES. The range for each part is as follows: Part 1 (FLUTE) ~ G4 to B5; Part 2 (VIOLIN) ~ D4 to G5. For the violin on either part, all notes are playable in the first position making this piece an excellent choice for early intermediate string players.
