Between gigs on winter terraces , walks on frozen streets , chamber music rehearsals , and the recognition of the good and the bad in man and machine , my quartet was born . It came at a time of reconciliation , of a dawning acceptance of the beauty , the necessity of exploration of advancing technology in music . Before then I had trouble with the synthetic nature of contemporary music ; it seemed to me a symbol of the degradation of the importance that we give to nature in society . However , as I listened more and more to electronic music , as I rehearsed Philip Glass with my friends , I came to accept that there is a coexistence as natural and wonderful as a cup of tea . Yes , it still worries me , the level to which we have come to depend on technological advantage , and I feel we have a long way to go before we reach equilibrium .In the meantime , I wrote this piece and prepared it with completely synthetic effects in the hope of reaching that balance , at least from an aesthetic perspective . It starts somewhat coldy , a siren , a train motor , a deep respiration and a sigh . It twists , it turns , and by the end humanity and its steel and plastic progeny are one .

When the normally informed and trained mind can retreat into a more relaxed and naïve state, the results can surprise and sparkle. Andante for String Quartet (Scintillare) captures a childlike, yet informed state of mind, a rare occurrence where music seems to be the only way to depict the liberating feeling. Scored for traditional string quartet, this short four-minute work was written for an advanced or professional ensemble needing repertoire for educational concerts in k-12 school venues. It's a highly accessible work with a lot of flourish, but still retaining elements of craft, for those in the audience that appreciate string quartet music on a more studied level. This work can also be used by school-aged (16-19 years-old) ensembles who have two advanced violinists paired up with a texturally supportive violist of intermediate ability who doesn't mind the occasional interspersed solo fill, and a rhythmically solid cellist, who will not have a technically difficult part, but still has a very important foundational role to play.

The music scene took notice of Erik Satie (1866-1925) all of a sudden: The world premiere of his ballet 'Parade' on 18 May 1917 [siehe dt. Text!] caused quite a scandal. The production which involved Sergey Diaghilev with his 'Ballets Russes', Pablo Picasso (scenery and costumes), Jean Cocteau (story) as well as Léonide Massine (choreography) divided the music scene of Paris, yet made the composer widely known. Satie who hardly had had any solid musical training and lived in Paris for almost all his life developed a new musical style, in deliberate rejection of the 'Wagnérisme' of his time. Classical form models, new harmonies, stylistic ease, meditative and clownish elements amalgamated in an original way, the perfect example being his '3 Gymnopédies' of 1888 the first of which was here arranged for a solo instrument with piano accompaniment: Thus, it is now possible, even for non-pianists, to play this famous miniature by Satie. Thanks to its easy playability, it can also be used for educational purposes.
