(SO.876359) A difficult recital showpiece with dramatic Spanish themes evoking the ambience of a tavern and its flamenco dancers. (2) ORENSKI IN BUCHAREST. (SO.876509) Of intermediate difficulty, the piece honors a Rumanian refugee who created a leading novelties business in the U.S. and introduced the composer to vexillology-flag study-as a hobby. (3) TO VODKA. (SO.876513) Of intermediate difficulty, this set of variations becomes progressively more hectic and ends with a burp. In an otherwise serious recital, it can serve as an entertaining interlude. But not for playing while inebriated. (4) O AMIGO DA ONÇA. (SO.876507) A difficult concert showpiece. Modernistic, it evokes the Brazilian jungle and its tiger, the onça. The title refers to a classic Brazilian anecdote: A man is explaining how to escape from a tiger and his friend keeps presenting obstacles to be overcome, to which the man in frustration finally exclaims, Hey! Are you my friend or the friend of the tiger?! The piece has a few obstacles of its own. (SO. ) Like a Beethoven song and country dance, this piece offers pleasing melodies for the beginner who is well along, both to study and to perform in recital. (2) MUSICBOX. (SO. ) This short easy piece imitates the sound of a music box, including its running down at the end. For instruction it can serve to introduce the student to light staccato bowing or up and down slurred staccato bowing. For performance it can serve as an amusing interlude. (3) HYMNSONG. (SO. ) In the form of an etude, this piece consists of a simple theme with numerous variations, somewhat like Paganini’s famous Caprice 24. Of intermediate difficulty, it offers double stops, tremolo, and various bowings. For performance it can be played as is or it can easily be shortened by omission of one or more passages. (4) MOTHER’S STORIES. (SO. ) Varying from sweet to dramatic, this simple composition offers an opportunity for emotional interpretation. Sir Edward Elgar’s Variations on an Original Theme, commonly known as Enigma Variations, may be the most wonderful musical tribute to friendship ever composed. Each of the fourteen variations is headed with initials or a code name of a family member or friend, with the last one being Elgar himself. The best known variation is the ninth, entitled Nimrod. It represents Augustus Jaeger, Elgar’s close friend and editor at his publisher Novello & Company. In the Bible, Nimrod is referred to as “the mighty hunter”, thus identifying with Jaeger (Jäger), meaning “hunter” in German. The stately and serene variation expresses the depth of the composer’s feelings for his friend, and is often performed separately on solemn occasions. This arrangement is based on the original orchestral score, and Elgar’s own piano reduction, both published by Novello in 1899. Technically it is not too difficult, though with some double stopping to complete the harmonies and for fullness of sound.CYPRESS PUBLISHING is pleased to be the imprint for arrangements for string ensemble by Stephen Levintow. He is a free lance professional violist and violinist specializing in chamber music, who began making string quartet and trio arrangements for wedding, party and corporate events, to expand the repertory or to improve on existing versions. Selections include unusual pieces by both familiar and lesser-known composers, plus standard classical and popular favorites. The goal is to produce high-quality, musically satisfying arrangements faithful to the composer’s original material, yet sight-readable in most cases by working professionals or intermediate to advanced students. The full range of normal string technique is employed, while avoiding unnecessary technical complexity. Melodic material is distributed throughout the four voices where appropriate, to maintain listener and performer interest. Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen (Old Viennese Melodies in German) is a set of three short pieces for violin and piano composed by Austrian-American violinist Fritz Kreisler. The three pieces are titled Liebesfreud (Love's Joy), Liebesleid (Love's Sorrow), and Schön Rosmarin (Lovely Rosemary).It is not known when the pieces are written, but they were published in 1905, deliberately misattributed to Joseph Lanner.[citation needed] The pieces had become parts of Kreisler's repertoire well before September 1910, when he copyrighted them under his own name.Kreisler often played these pieces as encores at his concerts, though the pieces are usually performed separately.In 1911, he published solo piano arrangements of the pieces as Alt-Wiener Tanzweisen. The pieces have since appeared in numerous settings for other instruments, or orchestrated.Two of the pieces, Liebesfreud and Liebesleid, were the subject of virtuoso transcriptions for solo piano by Kreisler's friend Sergei Rachmaninoff (1931), who also recorded these transcriptions.
