They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.It is actually the 1st movement of Domenico Gallo's 1st Trio Sonata in G.It was used by Igor Stravinsky as a basis of the first movement (Sinfonia) of his Neo Classical Ballet Pulcinella.The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Sinfonia.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's (Pergolesi's) melodies and bass lines with little change, he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications.My arrangement is of the the original Gallo piece:The only change I have made is to move the bar lines so that my piece starts, as does Stravinsky's, with a quaver pickup, rather than Gallo's half bar and a quaver pickup.My arrangement is entirely in 4/4 using Gallo's classical/baroque harmonies.It does not sound too dissimilar to Stravinsky's which sadly will be in copyright for many years.

Arranged wind quintetThe original baroque music used by Igor Stravinsky for his ballet Pulcinella was originally attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi, as they were so described in a Mr R. Bremner's original 1780 London publication. They were also arranged later by Hugo Riemann, and were again wrongly attributed to Giovanni Pergolesi.However Most of the original music is by Domenico Gallo (including the Finale of the suite), one or two are by Giovanni Pergolesi (including the Menuetto)The Pulcinella Suite for small chamber orchestra and 3 vocalists which was derived from the ballet, was written in 1922 and has no vocal parts. This is the original music he used as the basis of the Minuetto/Finale.But even though Stravinsky used Gallo's and Pergolesi's melodies and bass lines with little change in the earler movements of the Suite he managed to put his own unmistakable stamp on the music through his use of modern harmonies and occasional rhythmic modifications. An arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a very early wind quintet written by Edward Elgar while still based in Worcester in 1878-9, entitled Harmony Music No.1, after the German Harmoniemusik, meaning music for wind instruments. His quintet group (in which he played the bassoon) consisted of two flutes, an oboe, a clarinet and a bassoon, which by modern standards is rather unusual (omitting the usual French horn). He agreed to write a quintet for the group once a week, and he claimed to have written most of them during the 25-minute sermons at St. George's R.C. Church, where he had taken over the organ-playing from his father (and where the arranger ministered for three years in the 1990s!) It is a wonderful, cheerful, tuneful short piece (4-5 minutes long), but the original version is rarely performed, perhaps because of its difficulty on several fronts. First it is very fast, challenging performers' ability to tongue rapidly. Secondly, it repeatedly leaves no time to breathe, especially for the flautists (meaning that it has to be performed even faster, in order to get through it.) Thirdly, Elgar's oboist must have been extremely versatile, as its part is very low indeed in places (several low B's played pp at speed.) Finally, published copies seem to have rather a lot of editorial errors... This arrangement was therefore created in the hope that the piece might become more accessible and be more frequently performed. Although the bassoon part remains Elgar's, the other four players are used imaginatively to overcome many of the difficulties of the original. For example, the original low oboe parts are here played by one of the clarinets instead, and the severe breathing problems are solved by sharing repeated quavers between the four higher instruments.

It has undergone many versions in the past 150 years, including the original Civil War song to words by W. W. Fosdick, subtitled Maid with golden hair, Nora Lee, various glee club arrangements and, eventually, Elvis Presley's Love me Tender. The rhythms here switch from swing-like triplets to plain classical and back and various instruments have a few cheeky side comments from time to time, including chromatics and a development going into more modern-romantic harmonies. The sound sample is an electronic preview. The pdf contains score and parts. A simpler arrangement for choir is also available on this site under the title Nora Lee.

The current version if relatively modern, and the one that most hymnals use. I've used the 6/4 dancing form more than the chant. Both are beautiful, but this is more in the spirit of Come Hear the Bells. The bassoon has a cantus firmus at mm 29, and is otherwise featured.This is the fourth of five Christmas carols for woodwind quintet, in various styles. They share the themes of coming together and heeding the call of bells to celebrate the holidays.They would work separately running between 2 and 3 minutes or all together for about 13 minutes. So they would give your winds a chance to shine in contrast to your full ensemble. He is best known for his book of prints: Bizzarie di varie figure, published in 1624 in Livorno, and dedicated to Don Pietro Medici. The depiction of a variety of human shapes aggregated from a variety of objects or landscapes appears prescient of modern cubist experiments. Some of the figures are composed of boxes or raquets or curlicues.In this piece, I endeavored to illustrate in sound these beautiful, strange images. Traditional resources are used in unusual ways to depict for the listener what Bracelli so masterfully did in visual.
