La Sonate n° 6 Kharkiv pour guitare solo a été composée en 2021, à la fin du confinement lié au COVID-19. Ã? ce moment-là , ma famille et moi étions restés dans notre ville natale de Kharkiv (également connue sous le nom de Kharkov), en Ukraine, pendant près de deux ans. Nous considérions cette période de pandémie comme un désastre, mais nous avons réalisé plus tard que c'était en fait un moment plutôt heureux, car la guerre est arrivée dans notre pays quelques mois plus tard. Depuis 2022, une fraction considérable des 1,5 million de citoyens de Kharkiv ont quitté leur foyer, ceux qui sont restés vivent sous des attaques incessantes de missiles, et beaucoup ont été tués. Je voudrais dédier cette Sonate à la ville frontalière de Kharkiv et, surtout, à ses citoyens souffrant de la guerre.Pourtant, la musique de la Sonate n'a aucun programme spécifique. Ici, je donnerai un bref aperçu de ses principaux éléments de composition pour faciliter les interprétations futures.Les premier et quatrième mouvements de cette Sonate sont basés sur l'interaction entre le principe dodécaphonique et le centre tonal de sol majeur, naturel pour la guitare. En particulier, le premier mouvement est basé sur l'interaction de la triade de sol majeur Solâ??Siâ??Ré des cordes de guitare à vide 2â??3â??4, le motif ascendant 1 impliquant les notes Miâ??Fa#â??Laâ??Do# (à l'origine sur la première corde), et le motif descendant 2 utilisant les notes Miâ??Doâ??Sibâ??La (à l'origine sur la corde de basse 6). Ces éléments se complètent presque pour former douze tons (à l'exception du Fa manquant), et les motifs alternent avec des fragments ostinato où chaque note de la triade de sol majeur est déplacée pas à pas d'un demi-ton vers le haut ou vers le bas.Le deuxième mouvement est un Scherzo impliquant de nombreux demi-tons dans des accords accentués et des passages rapides, ainsi qu'un mouvement mélodique chromatique dans la voix de basse. Il est presque atonal dans certains fragments, mais a un centre tonal global de la mineur.Le troisième mouvement est un Adagio méditatif basé sur un thème composé dans l'échelle hexatonique Réâ??Miâ??Faâ??Sol#â??Laâ??Si et des accords ostinato impliquant les cordes de basse à vide Miâ??Laâ??Ré et le demi-ton Siâ??Do.Enfin, le quatrième mouvement est basé sur le thème dodécaphonique complet composé de deux phrases comprenant les motifs 1 et 2 du premier mouvement : Solâ??Faâ??Sibâ??Labâ??Doâ??Mibâ??Ré et Miâ??Siâ??Do#â??Laâ??Fa#. Ce thème est présenté dans ses formes prime et rétrograde. Il y a des dialogues entre la première corde, les basses et les cordes médianes à vide, similaires au premier mouvement. Ã? son apogée, le thème dodécaphonique est interprété en utilisant le mouvement parallèle de l'accord de sol majeur standard de la guitare avec les cordes médianes à vide sur douze positions.La Sonate a été créée en première et enregistrée (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) par le célèbre guitariste ukrainien Marko Topchii, qui a également vécu et étudié à Kharkiv. Je lui suis extrêmement reconnaissant pour l'interprétation brillante de cette pièce.Je suis très redevable envers Productions d'Oz d'avoir conservé mes notations originales là où celles-ci ne correspondent pas au style de l'éditeur.Sonata No. 6 Kharkiv for guitar solo was composed in 2021, in the end of the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations.The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down.The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions.The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.

Harmonics added when advantageous, but playing the regular note would work as well.10. Piano pedal markings removed and replaced with commas. It's a flaw of sheet music that slurs, ties, and phrase markings are all the same symbol, and having all three happening can clutter a score.Compromises This may sound obvious, but of course I had to make some alterations to make this flow properly on guitar. Many of the original chord inversions on the piano were not kept. However, many harmonies were kept intact as far as following the chord nomenclature name. Measure 50 was originally an A minor chord, the irony is that the F major suprise is an homage to Chopin anyways, suprised he didn't opt for it. To be honest, I don't like how there is a perfect authentic cadence in measure 50. I think modern audiences would want to clap too badly, so I believe that ending needs to be slightly messed up to propel the music forward, and give a sense that there is still a problem. The other chord that was changed was an E7b9 to a Ddim7 in measure 78. If you know your theory well, you'll realize these chords have the same exact function and nearly the same notes, it's just that Ddim7 flowed a bit better on guitar. I'd rather have guitarists play the rhythms correctly and with musicality, than have guitarist clunkily go though overly large chords in order to mantain historical accuracy. Measure 15 was hard to keep the original chord intact. A Bb/D with a G in the melody as a suspension sounds more like a g minor chord. That is cliche Chopinesque neopolitan moment so the Bb is crucial to mantain. Having some rough sort of Bbmaj7 or G minor chord while mantaining the melody seemed to sound the best even though the name of the chord might have gotten a little off. I tried chord charts, but they seemed messier than what it was worth. I also could have the denser tablature in the sheet music, but that does make it look 10x more intimidating. So this version is unique in that the tablature is my denser arrangement, whereas the sheet music would allow someone to quickly make a new arrangement. I like this ethos because most guitarists are likely to be much better at playing chord quickly when they don't have to have an exact voicing. This makes this arrangement easier to further perfect since I am naming the harmonies, which often isn't done in classical music.BackstoryThis is one of my favorite pieces, and also my favorite composer. I feel classical guitar repertoire is lacking easily playable music in the romantic style. Often, if it is romantic guitar music, it is extemely difficult and therefore only a select few can enjoy performing it. Also, I sometimes get my hopes up to find a romantic guitar composer, but then after listening, there's nothing quite like Chopin. Obviously, you will have to have some chops to play this since it's one of the most ambitious undertakings a guitarist could take, but it's also not so hard that you have to be train for a decade because I changed the key.

The regular arpeggio gesture is straightforward on piano, but on guitar the performer may have to do a few adjustments to keep this gesture clear. The performer should play the arpeggios over multiple strings as much as possible allowing the notes to ring beyond their notated values. The music can be realized in various ways; hence the fingerings are suggestions and some measures can be played without a Barre. For an ethereal conclusion, I raised the octave of the last measures.Prelude N. 1 in C Major (no sharps or flats) is the first of 44 preludes and fugues written by Bach for keyboard. It follows a progression of arpeggiated chords touching multiple keys as it climaxes on an exquisite pedal point in the Dominant before returning to C-major. One of the most often arranged of Bachâ??s compositions, it was most famously the basis of Ave Maria by Charles Gunoud.This arrangement of Prelude No. 1 in C major, WTC Book I, BWV 846 is featured on the 2022 album â??Godâ??s Time: Music of J.S. Bach on Guitarâ?? by Aaron Larget-Caplan on Tiger Turn (888-09) and streams worldwide. These short Preludes for guitar are intended to illustrate a particular technical point or points. It may be either technical or compositional or both and I would have to say that I have been influenced by Tarrega’s Preludes which he wrote mostly for his students and so have called them Preludes rather than Studies. I learnt Tarrega’s pieces such as Adelita and Lagrima early in my study of the guitar and always enjoyed their nature as both technical exercises but also performance pieces. I have tried to emulate that with these pieces. The piece makes extensive use of open strings but is essentially a set of variations. The melody keeps returning but with small alterations as does the accompaniment. There is also a B section in E minor before a return to the opening melody. The return to the opening section has, as a variation, a change in bass and harmony. The original C major7 chord becomes E minor by changing the bass and the E minor chord becomes C major7 in the same fashion. The effect is subtle but attractive and is no harder to play.

Published by DML (A0.1185160). These short Preludes for guitar are intended to illustrate a particular technical point or points. It may be either technical or compositional or both and I would have to say that I have been influenced by Tarrega’s Preludes which he wrote mostly for his students and so have called them Preludes rather than Studies. I learnt Tarrega’s pieces such as Adelita and Lagrima early in my study of the guitar and always enjoyed their nature as both technical exercises but also performance pieces. I have tried to emulate that with these pieces. The piece is written as a Fugue with two voices. The idea was to explore counterpoint on the guitar and how to handle it. The time signature is 6/8 which suits the guitar well as it gives a very lyrical feel. The first voice opens the piece with the subject and then at bar 8 the second voice enters in the bass while the first voice plays the countersubject. I have given considerable technical guidance both in fingering and the use of different strings as these pieces are intended to be instructional, if in doubt you will find all the techniques you need in my book The Art Of Accompaniment On The Guitar available from Amazon.

These intervals are the easiest to play on guitar and the sweetest sounding though they can still be used dramatically as in this work. The middle section, or B section if you prefer, uses chords with dissonance built into the chord shape and which are also not too difficult to play.

D'une Manière Très Particulière was originally written for solo piano and has been arranged for solo guitar by Brad Rau. Fingering suggestions have been added to make it easier to play. The original piece was notated without measures; however, measures have been added to make learning easier. The pieces also do not have a key signature. However, it seems to begin in C minor. It has been transposed to A minor to make it easier to play. This is from a set of pieces Erik Satie wrote in 1897 called Pieces Froides or Cold Pieces. The first set of pieces is called Airs à faire fuir or Tunes to Make You Run Away. This movement is called D'une manière très particulière or In a Very Unusual Manner. In these sets of pieces, Satie writes in the enigmatic he used to compose the Gymnopedies and Gnossienne composed earlier. This little-known piece is rarely played on guitar but works really well.

Hopefully this makes these arrangements all-inclusive for different purposes and skill levels. Also the tab version is meant for Drop D tuning and the sheet music is for standard tuning! Just be careful with your printer settings if you don't want two versions!1. Impressionism French minimalist piece arranged for guitar in Drop D Tuning.2. The composer indications in text are not my recommendations, but the original composer's. 2. Guitar tablature added with circles for half notes and whole notes.3. Measures and time signatures removed to reflect the ethos of the original composer. 4. Engraved to fit on four pages. Many of the lines themselves represent a musical phrase, making my arrangement that much easier to perform musically.  5. Courtesy accidentals added but they just look like regular accidentals. I did this especially because the piece is one gigantic measure and accidental etiquette is hard to follow under those circumstances. 6. Some overly contrived ties removed.This one is a real challenge to engrave because the original composer didn't have bar lines or time signatures. Cool idea but that can cause even the best sheet music programs to glitch out a bit when you have 16/4 hidden time signatures! This especially causes problems with accidentals, and it also causes rhythm problems when multiple voices are happening. As always, I like to try to have notes with upward stems represent the main voice, and downward stems to represent background voices, even though this leads to a bit of messiness with stem collisions. Normally the sheet music shows the rhythm the best, but dare I say the tab actually keeps track of time pretty well since all the voices are condensed into one rhythm line.

PREFACE AND BRIEF ANALYTICAL NOTESThe three sonatinas op.71 by Mauro Giuliani in C, G, and D were first published in 1816 in Vienna and were intended as student pieces of progressive difficulty. In parallel with this intention they are also fully developed three-movement works which reveal Giulianiâ??s technique as a composer with harmony, counterpoint, and structure.They certainly have the time length and the variety of full scale sonatas, but here Giuliani has chosen to use the supporting structures of sonatas met in movements other than the first, such as Menuetto and Trio, Rondo, Marcia and Trio, Scherzo and Trio, etc,  rather than sonata form itself.As it stands, this first sonatina in C has the following three movements:1 Maestoso (Moderato) which is a set of a theme and three variations, or better termed as a set of mathematical divisions reminiscent of an earlier era, as the accompaniment of the theme is given in crotchets, quavers, quaver triplets, and semi-quavers.2 Menuetto-Trio-Menuetto da capo written typically in the subdominant key of F and fully developed as per classical 19th century usage.3 Rondo. This movement is also written in a classical rondo style and form as an A-B-A-C-B-A-codetta  structure, with a typical tonal scheme of A in the tonic Key (C), B in the dominant key (G), and C in the relative minor key (Am).Therefore in this work we do not meet with structural innovations of any kind, but with strong affirmation of already existing and well established early 19th century structural norms, but the beautiful personal melodic and harmonic style of Giuliani and even his routine guitaristic nuances and formulas are present in all three movements and can be enjoyed as always.TECHNICALThis publication keeps each separate movement within the limit of two pages, thus avoiding page turns. It is published with two versions of the same pieces given in undecorated and decorated pages for the user to select which version he prefers to print out. Compromises have to be constantly made, and so of course some bass clef notes or duplicate letter names have been removed. The B section is especially difficult since all notes might be possible if it was played an octave up, but then the mood and tone completely changes. 1. Arranged for guitar. 2. Slurs added 3.
