The earliest known surviving manuscript of Alessandro Marcello’s Oboe concerto in D minor exists not as a score from the composer’s own hand, but as an arrangement for solo keyboard by contemporary J.S. Bach. This arrangement, dating from 1713-1714, is part of a collection of works entitled 16 Konzerte nach verschiedenen Meistern, BWV 972–987 (16 concerts according to different masters). It is Bach’s arrangement on which this duo version for guitar is heavily based. Bach discovered this concerto and other works by Italian masters while under the employment of Duke Wilhelm Ernst in Weimar.. The musical library of the ducal court was rich with orchestral works by Vivaldi, Corelli, Torelli, Frescobaldi and of course Marcello (both Benedetto and Alessandro). Bach saw this as an opportunity to learn about the Italian style, and proceeded to arrange sixteen of these concerti for solo harpsichord. Texturally, Bach would mimic the alternating tutti and solo sections by assigning them to different manuals of the harpsichord. Twenty years later, Bach would compose his own “Italian Concerto†BWV 971, for solo keyboard, which remains as one of his most recognizable works. The Marcello concerto is in typical 3 movement form: Andante e spiccato, Adagio, and Presto. For this arrangement, single-string fingerings of melodic passages were favoured for the first movement, for the sake of articulation and uniformity of the line. Also, the melodic material is passed between both guitars to achieve a more concertante setting and to enhance passages with repeated material. The second movement maintains a soloist/accompanist setting throughout. Although it was tempting to use both guitars to fill out the harmony of the opening and closing sections, the performance proved to be more effective with one guitarist able to solely concentrate on the famous melody. The final movement, like the first, divides the melodic material between both guitars in order to give both players interesting material and to give the first guitar a bit of breathing room.

One of Nazareth's most elaborate pieces, the modern brigh waltz Fantástica (Phantastica, in the original spelling) is part of Nazareth's group of concert pieces. These are songs with the greatest pianistic pretensions, which, in general, were not published during his lifetime and are rarely played. It was first published in 2008 by the portal Musica Brasilis and does not have a dedication. In his autograph manuscript there is no date; it is only known that in 1922 it already existed, as his name appears in one of the listings that Nazareth made at that time. Its subtitle may have been inspired by Chopin's first four bright waltzes. This influence is also felt in the elaborate piano technique used in several passages that demand great virtuosity. Bach Prelude from BWV998 for 2 GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This wonderfully lyrical Bach Prelude is one of the most famous preludes to fit onto guitar.I hope you’ll find it’s also one of the best to fit onto two guitars!The original was in the key of Eb major and the facsimile score I used as the basis for my arrangement was for keyboard. I’ve simply taken all the original music and split it across two guitars in the key of D, to give a wonderful stereo effect and to make the phrases stand out. The original had very specific rests in the bass lines which are pretty much automatic on a harpsichord with limited sustain, and quite easy to do on a modern piano. For a guitar, the mix of open and stopped strings can make consistent note lengths quite hard to achieve, and I have included a second arrangement in which the bass notes are notated as ringing on (as indeed most solo guitarists do, starting with the first note of the piece!). The result is a score which is much easier on the eye, and the “decay†of the guitar's bass notes mean that it doesn’t sound at all untidy - indeed it sounds more mellow.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!This is one of a large and growing range of accessible ensembles from experienced arranger Derek Hasted, and is supplied as full score and parts. The Hupfauf is a companion piece, set in a different rhythm but with ostensibly the same harmonic structure (apart from the Tanz’s Coda which is absent from the Hupfauf).Each dance has two beats in the bar, and the two dances can flow into each other or can be played with a short break. When they run into each other, it makes sense to maintain the two-beat pulse, but if this makes the Hupfauf stressful to play, one can maintain instead the value of the half note (minim), so that the Hupfauf proceeds at a more modest pace.You can play the whole piece (each player plays tune and countermelody in turn), or you can shorten the piece by omitting the sections starting at A and B, which also makes the piece ideal for a mixed ability duo, as one player keeps the tune and one keeps the countermelody.Feel free to add dynamics, a little more articulation and possibly some tone color changes.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!

The title of the air comes from the name of the county located in Northern Ireland. The air was collected by Jane Ross of Limavady, County Londonderry, who heard it played by an itinerant piper or fiddler. The descendants of blind fiddler Jimmy McCurry assert that he is the musician from whom she transcribed the tune but there is no historical evidence to support this speculation. The tune was listed as an anonymous air, with a note attributing its collection to Jane Ross of Londonderry. This led to the descriptive title Londonderry Air being used for the piece.

Elsewhere the accompaniment is less rhythmically busy than the original, yet the chords are retained.There are two arrangements in this one edition...Version 1 allocates the music to the players as if they were the left and right hands of the piano piece - ideal for a duo in which one player is technically stronger than the other (for example a student/teacher duet).Version 2 swaps the roles around at the phrase boundaries and suits a well-matched duo.The choice of which you play is yours...The arpeggios are fingered because they generally only work well in one position. The melody, by contrast, is unfingered; it is chromatic and so there is no place on the neck where all the notes are accessible. Audiences equate effortless with easy, but it can be a bit of a beast to play well.Why this arrangement?I’ve lowered the key by one tone which makes many of the chords sound more mellow.I’ve fixed the ungainly jumps in the bass line which came as a constraint of playing up the neck on solo guitar.I’ve improved the connectivity of the middle voices from chord to chord so the chord changes sound more effortless and natural.A side effect is that everything is easier and the sustain seems more effortless.My duet arrangement comes in 2 formats... This one is a performance version (in which the workload is shared equally and there’s a truly effortless switching of parts in the middle), set in score only for two intermediate players.A separate one (for student and teacher) comprises a melody line and an arpeggio accompaniment, set in both score and score+tab. Giuseppe Domenico Scarlatti, also known as Domingo or Doménico Scarlatti (26 October 1685 – 23 July 1757), was an Italian composer. He is classified primarily as a Baroque composer chronologically, although his music was influential in the development of the Classical style. Like his renowned father Alessandro Scarlatti, he composed in a variety of musical forms, although today he is known mainly for his 555 keyboard sonatas. He spent much of his life in the service of the Portuguese and Spanish royal families.Distinctive attributes of his music are:The influence of Iberian (Portuguese and Spanish) folk music. An example is his use of the Phrygian mode and other tonal inflections more or less alien to European art music. Many of his figurations and dissonances are suggestive of the guitar.The influence of the Spanish guitar can be seen in notes being played repeatedly.A formal device where each half of a sonata leads to a pivotal point, which Kirkpatrick termed the crux, and which is sometimes underlined by a pause or fermata. Before the crux, Scarlatti sonatas often contain their main thematic variety, and after the crux, the music makes more use of repetitive figurations as it modulates away from the home key (in the first half) or back to the home key (in the second half).Its tendency to be in the galant style.

DEVIL'S GALOP (Dick Barton Theme Tune) - TWO GUITARSFor Classical or Acoustic Guitar - sometimes it's erroneously listed here as Electric Guitar.Derek Hasted writes This evocative tune was the theme music to Dick Barton Special Agent, a radio drama on the BBC many decades ago.The music is full of tension, with rising chromatic chords and long chromatic scale passages creating a constant restless feel.The roles of tune and accompaniment swap over increasingly often as the piece progresses, so the audience will have plenty to watch as well as hear.The accompaniment role is fingered, as there’s really only one place on the guitar to play the chords. The tune, though, is unfingered - there is a compromise between the short reach in high positions and the extra height of the action - you may prefer to stay up the neck, or you may wish to move up and down - please add fingering and position changes where you wish. And add slurs too, if these improve the flow of the music.Here and there, I have deliberately “respelled†some of the accidentals in a way that hopefully improves overall readability, and sometimes the two parts have two representations of the same note at the same time.A version of this was played by the Hampshire Guitar Orchestra who also managed to find time to mop their brows in the occasional pauses in the action.I hope you enjoy playing this piece!
